The neutron star in Cassiopeia A: equation of state, superfluidity, and Joule heating
The thermomagnetic evolution of the young neutron star in Cassiopea A is
studied by considering fast neutrino emission processes. In particular, we
consider neutron star models obtained from the equation of state computed in
the framework of the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone many-body theory and variational
methods, and models obtained with the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall equation of
state. It is shown that it is possible to explain a fast cooling regime as the
one observed in the neutron star in Cassiopea A if the Joule heating produced
by dissipation of the small-scale magnetic field in the crust is taken into
account. We thus argue that it is difficult to put severe constraints on the
superfluid gap if the Joule heating is considered.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear on A&A Letter
A Special Education Teacher\u27s Use of Progress Monitoring
This study explored my use of progress monitoring in order to find the most effective ways to organize and gather data to support two of my students\u27 literacy development. I investigated the purpose and reliability of my use of assessment. I have chosen the three participants based on their individual needs for literacy instruction and their quality of attendance, yet two of the three students participated. The design of this study enabled me to authentically and systematically reflect on my use of progress monitoring and the impact it had my individual students
The role of movement in data visualization: animation as an agent of meaning
If we look at data visualizations as signifying machines, in which
every element is meaningful, what is the contribution of animation to the
construction of meaning? What does motion or animation add in terms of
significance to different kinds of graphics? Does it add something in terms of realism? How can animation be an implementer of meaning, dramatizing the sense of data or expressing doubt about the data itself
3-d lattice SU(3) free energy to four loops
We report on the perturbative computation of the 3d lattice Yang-Mills free
energy to four loops by means of Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory. The
known first and second orders have been correctly reproduced; the third and
fourth order coefficients are new results and the known logarithmic IR
divergence in the fourth order has been correctly identified. Progress is being
made in switching to the gluon mass IR regularization and the related inclusion
of the Faddeev-Popov determinant.Comment: Lattice2004(non-zero), 3 pages, 2 figure
One-body dissipation and chaotic dynamics in a classical simulation of a nuclear gas
In order to understand the origin of one-body dissipation in nuclei, we
analyze the behavior of a gas of classical particles moving in a
two-dimensional cavity with nuclear dimensions. This "nuclear" billiard has
multipole-deformed walls which undergo periodic shape oscillations. We
demonstrate that a single particle Hamiltonian containing coupling terms
between the particles' motion and the collective coordinate induces a chaotic
dynamics for any multipolarity, independently on the geometry of the billiard.
If the coupling terms are switched off the "wall formula" predictions are
recovered. We discuss the dissipative behavior of the wall motion and its
relation with the order-to-chaos transition in the dynamics of the microscopic
degrees of freedom.Comment: 16 pages, 12 postscript figures included, revtex, new version
