Circuit and plasticity defects in the developing somatosensory cortex of FMR1 knock-out mice
Silencing of the Fmr1 gene causes fragile X syndrome. Although defects in synaptic plasticity in the cerebral cortex have been linked to cognitive impairments in Fmr1 knock-out (ko) mice, the specific cortical circuits affected in the syndrome are unknown. Here, we investigated the development of excitatory projections in the barrel cortex of Fmr1 ko mice. In 2-week-old Fmr1 ko mice, a major ascending projection connecting layer 4 (L4) to L3 (L4-->L3), was defective in multiple and independent ways: its strength was reduced, caused by a lower connection probability; the axonal arbors of L4 cells were spatially diffuse in L2/3; the L4-->L3 projection did not show experience-dependent plasticity. By 3 weeks, the strength of the L4-->L3 projection was similar to that of wild type. Our data indicate that Fmr1 shapes sensory cortical circuits during a developmental critical period
The algebraic and Hamiltonian structure of the dispersionless Benney and Toda hierarchies
The algebraic and Hamiltonian structures of the multicomponent dispersionless
Benney and Toda hierarchies are studied. This is achieved by using a modified
set of variables for which there is a symmetry between the basic fields. This
symmetry enables formulae normally given implicitly in terms of residues, such
as conserved charges and fluxes, to be calculated explicitly. As a corollary of
these results the equivalence of the Benney and Toda hierarchies is
established. It is further shown that such quantities may be expressed in terms
of generalized hypergeometric functions, the simplest example involving
Legendre polynomials. These results are then extended to systems derived from a
rational Lax function and a logarithmic function. Various reductions are also

Stellar kinematics in double-barred galaxies: the sigma-hollows
We present SAURON integral-field stellar velocity and velocity dispersion
maps for four double-barred early-type galaxies: NGC2859, NGC3941, NGC4725 and
NGC5850. The presence of the inner bar does not produce major changes in the
line-of-sight velocity, but it appears to have an important effect in the
stellar velocity dispersion maps: we find two sigma-hollows of amplitudes
between 10 and 40 km/s on either side of the center, at the ends of the inner
bars. We have performed numerical simulations to explain these features. Ruling
out other possibilities, we conclude that the sigma-hollows are an effect of
the contrast between two kinematically different components: the high velocity
dispersion of the bulge and the more ordered motion (low velocity dispersion)

Classification of integrable two-component Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type in 2+1 dimensions
Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type occur in a wide range of
applications including fluid dynamics, the Whitham averaging procedure and the
theory of Frobenius manifolds. In 1+1 dimensions, the requirement of the
integrability of such systems by the generalised hodograph transform implies
that integrable Hamiltonians depend on a certain number of arbitrary functions
of two variables. On the contrary, in 2+1 dimensions the requirement of the
integrability by the method of hydrodynamic reductions, which is a natural
analogue of the generalised hodograph transform in higher dimensions, leads to
finite-dimensional moduli spaces of integrable Hamiltonians. In this paper we
classify integrable two-component Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type for
all existing classes of differential-geometric Poisson brackets in 2D,
establishing a parametrisation of integrable Hamiltonians via
elliptic/hypergeometric functions. Our approach is based on the Godunov-type
representation of Hamiltonian systems, and utilises a novel construction of
Godunov's systems in terms of generalised hypergeometric functions.Comment: Latex, 34 page
Boxy/peanut/X bulges, barlenses and the thick part of galactic bars: What are they and how did they form?
Bars have a complex three-dimensional shape. In particular their inner part
is vertically much thicker than the parts further out. Viewed edge-on, the
thick part of the bar is what is commonly known as a boxy-, peanut- or X- bulge
and viewed face-on it is referred to as a barlens. These components are due to
disc and bar instabilities and are composed of disc material. I review here
their formation, evolution and dynamics, using simulations, orbital structure

Coalition theories: empirical evidence for dutch municipalities
The paper analyzes coalition formation in Dutch municipalities. After discussing the main features of the institutional setting, several theories are discussed, which are classified as size oriented, policy oriented and actor oriented models. A test statistic is proposed to determine the predictive power of these models. The empirical analysis shows that strategic positions as well as some of the distinguished preferences are important in the setting of Dutch municipalities. Especially, the dominant minimum number principle yields highly significant results for coalition formations in the period 1978â1986
Star formation and figure rotation in the early-type galaxy NGC2974
We present Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) far (FUV) and near (NUV)
ultraviolet imaging of the nearby early-type galaxy NGC2974, along with
complementary ground-based optical imaging. In the ultraviolet, the galaxy
reveals a central spheroid-like component and a newly discovered complete outer
ring of radius 6.2kpc, with suggestions of another partial ring at an even
larger radius. Blue FUV-NUV and UV-optical colours are observed in the centre
of the galaxy and from the outer ring outward, suggesting young stellar
populations (< 1Gyr) and recent star formation in both locations. This is
supported by a simple stellar population model which assumes two bursts of star
formation, allowing us to constrain the age, mass fraction and surface mass
density of the young component pixel by pixel. Overall, the mass fraction of
the young component appears to be just under 1per cent (lower limit,
uncorrected for dust extinction). The additional presence of a nuclear and an
inner ring (radii 1.4 and 2.9kpc, respectively), as traced by [OIII] emission,
suggests ring formation through resonances. All three rings are consistent with
a single pattern speed of km/s/kpc, typical of S0 galaxies and only
marginally slower than expected for a fast bar if traced by a small observed
surface brightness plateau. This thus suggests that star formation and
morphological evolution in NGC2974 at the present epoch are primarily driven by
a rotating asymmetry (probably a large-scale bar), despite the standard

A SAURON study of stars and gas in Sa bulges
We present results from our ongoing effort to understand the morphological
and kinematical properties of early-type galaxies using the integral-field
spectrograph SAURON. We discuss the relation between the stellar and gas
morphology and kinematics in our sub-sample of 24 representative Sa spiral
bulges. We focus on the frequency of kinematically decoupled components and on

Environment, Ram Pressure, and Shell Formation in HoII
Neutral hydrogen VLA D-array observations of the dwarf irregular galaxy HoII,
a prototype galaxy for studies of shell formation, are presented. HI is
detected to radii over 16' or 4 R_25, and M_HI=6.44x10^8 M_sun. The total HI
map has a comet-like appearance suggesting that HoII is affected by ram
pressure from an intragroup medium (IGM). A rotation curve corrected for
asymmetric drift was derived and an analysis of the mass distribution yields a
total mass 6.3x10^9 M_sun, of which about 80% is dark. HoII lies northeast of
the M81 group's core, along with Kar52 (M81dwA) and UGC4483. No signs of
interaction are observed and it is argued that HoII is part of the NGC2403
subgroup, infalling towards M81. A case is made for ram pressure stripping and
an IGM in the M81 group. Stripping of the disk outer parts would require an IGM
density n_IGM>=4.0x10^-6 atoms/cm^3 at the location of HoII. This corresponds
to 1% of the virial mass of the group uniformly distributed over a volume just
enclosing HoII and is consistent with the X-ray properties of small groups. It
is argued that existing observations of HoII do not support self-propagating
star formation scenarios, whereby the HI holes and shells are created by
supernova explosions and stellar winds. Many HI holes are located in low
surface density regions of the disk, where no star formation is expected or
observed. Ram pressure has the capacity to enlarge preexisting holes and lower
their creation energies, helping to bridge the gap between the observed star
