Smart technologies: useful tools to assess the exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation for general population and outdoor workers
Beside some documented benefits attributed to ultraviolet solar radiation (solar UVR), a lot of adverse effects are a consequence of a chronic exposure, including the occurrence of photo-induced skin cancer. Improvement in risks perception, due to UVR overexposure, in the case of occupational or recreational exposure, is of great importance for public health. The amount of exposure to UVR has to be assessed as accurately as possible, with the aim to characterize different exposure conditions and, by their appropriate management, to prevent adverse health effects attributed to prolonged exposure to solar radiation (SR). The available technology allows to acquire such information, either using miniaturized and wearable sensors, or through devices who exploit radiative transfer models by integrating satellite-based radiometric data with meteorological data. We proceeded to an intercomparison to evaluate the performance of different devices in three commonly exposure conditions. Applications using satellite data, developed for preventing sunburn during recreational exposure, are adeguate for that purpose, while for a more accurate exposure assessment, only those which evaluate the irradiance in near real-time provide acceptable results. Unlike earlier, the low-cost devices that use wearable sensors showed inadequate performance for our purpose
Correcting cold wire measurements in isotropic turbulence with a DNS database
We estimate the effect of the finite spatial resolution of a cold wire for scalar measurements, using a database from direct numerical simulations (DNS). These are for homogeneous isotropic turbulence at low Taylor-microscale Reynolds number (≃ 42) and Schmidt number unity. Correction factors for the scalar variance, scalar mean dissipation rate, and mixed velocity-scalar derivative skewness are evaluated, for a sensor length of up to 15 times the Batchelor length scale. The largest attenuation effect is found on the dissipation rate, followed by the scalar variance. The mixed skewness,which is affected the least, is overestimated
Echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in complete transposition of the great arteries
Subpulmonic stenosis in complete d-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) is a frequently associated malformation, the precise diagnosis of which is essential for optimal medical and surgical treatment. Sixteen patients with d-TGA and subpulmonic stenosis have been studied by M-mode and two-dimensional (2DE) echocardiography and cardiac catheterization. Dynamic obstruction was found in six patients and fixed stenosis in 10. Systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve without fixed obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) was present in patients with dynamic stenosis. Measurements of left ventricular end-diastolic posterior wall thickness to minor semiaxis ratio correlated well (p < 0.001) with the pressure gradient across the LVOT. Various types of anatomic fixed obstruction are described. M-mode echocardiography provides assessment of dynamic obstruction but does not allow quantitative evaluation of the length of the narrowed segment. The latter can be achieved by 2DE, which offers improved definition of different anatomic types
Correlation between HIV and HCV in Brazilian prisoners: evidence for parenteral transmission inside prison
OBJETIVO: É um fato correntemente aceito que as condições de confinamento aumentam o risco de algumas infecções relacionadas às práticas sexuais e/ou ao uso de drogas injetáveis. Realizou-se estudo para estimar a densidade de incidência da infecção pelo HIV na população prisional com aplicação de técnicas matemáticas. MÉTODOS: Foram entrevistados em São Paulo, SP, 631 prisioneiros da maior prisão da América do Sul, que abrigava aproximadamente 4.900 presos na ocasião do estudo. Foi colhido sangue da população entrevistada, analisado o risco para a infecção pelo HIV e realizados testes sorológicos para HIV, HCV e sífilis. Técnicas matemáticas foram usadas para se estimar a densidade de incidência do HIV relacionada ao tempo de encarceramento. RESULTADOS: As prevalências gerais encontradas foram: HIV -- 16%; HCV -- 34%; sífilis -- 18%. Os principais fatores associados à infecção pelo HIV foram a soropositividade ao HCV (OR=10,49) e a confissão do uso de drogas injetáveis (OR=3,36). A análise matemática mostrou que o risco de adquirir a infecção pelo HIV aumenta com o tempo de detenção, atingindo o máximo por volta de 3 anos de aprisionamento. CONCLUSÕES: A correlação entre a soroprevalência do HIV e do HCV e os resultados da análise matemática sugerem que a transmissão do HIV nestsa população se dá preferencialmente pela via parenteral e que seu risco aumenta com o tempo de encarceramento.OBJECTIVE: It is an accepted fact that confinement conditions increase the risk of some infections related to sexual and/or injecting drugs practices. Mathematical techniques were applied to estimate time-dependent incidence densities of HIV infection among inmates. METHODS: A total of 631 prisoners from a Brazilian prison with 4,900 inmates at that time were interviewed and their blood drawn. Risky behavior for HIV infection was analyzed, and serological tests for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis were performed, intended as surrogates for parenteral and sexual HIV transmission, respectively. Mathematical techniques were used to estimate the incidence density ratio, as related to the time of imprisonment. RESULTS: Prevalence were: HIV -- 16%; HCV -- 34%; and syphilis -- 18%. The main risk behaviors related to HIV infection were HCV prevalence (OR=10.49) and the acknowledged use of injecting drugs (OR=3.36). Incidence density ratio derivation showed that the risk of acquiring HIV infection increases with the time of imprisonment, peaking around three years after incarceration. CONCLUSIONS: The correlation between HIV and HCV seroprevalence and the results of the mathematical analysis suggest that HIV transmission in this population is predominantly due to parenteral exposure by injecting drug, and that it increases with time of imprisonment
Cardiorespiratory DB: Collection of cardiorespiratory data acquired during normal breathing, deep breathing and breath holding
The database is constituted by 50 datasets containing cardiorespiratory signals acquired from 50 healthy volunteer subjects (one dataset for each subject; 23 males and 27 females; age: 23±5 years) while performing normal breathing, deep breathing, and breath holding, and two spreadsheet files, namely the “SubjectsInfo.xlsx” and “DBInfo.xlsx” containing the metadata of subjects (including demographic data) and of acquired signals, respectively. Cardiorespiratory signals consisted in simultaneously recorded 12-lead electrocardiograms acquired by the clinical M12 Global InstrumentationR digital Holter ECG recorder, and single-lead electrocardiograms and respiration signals acquired by the wearable chest strap BioHarness 3.0 by Zephyr. The database may be useful to: (1) validate the use of wearable sensors in the acquisition of cardiorespiratory data during different respiration kinds, including apnea; (2) investigate the physiological association between cardiovascular and respiratory systems; (3) validate algorithms able to indirectly extract the respiration signal from the electrocardiogram; (4) study the fatigue level induced by a series of controlled respiration patterns; and (5) investigate the effect of COVID-19 infection on the cardiorespiratory system

MODELING the INTERACTION BETWEEN AIDS and TUBERCULOSIS
A deterministic model is proposed for the study of the dynamics of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and tuberculosis (TB) co-infection. the model is comprised by a set of sixteen ordinary differential equations representing different states of both diseases, and it is intended to provide a theoretical framework for the study of the interaction between both infections. An approximate threshold condition for a non-autonomous system: an application to a vector-borne infection

We found that an approximate threshold condition for infection persistence
describes all possible behavior of the system.
As far as we know, the kind of analysis here proposed is entirely new. No
precise mathematical theorems are demonstrated but we give enough numerical

Estimation of Tidal Volume during Exercise Stress Test from Wearable-Device Measures of Heart Rate and Breathing Rate
Tidal volume (TV), defined as the amount of air that moves in or out of the lungs with each respiratory cycle, is important in evaluating the respiratory function. Although TV can be reliably measured in laboratory settings, this information is hardly obtainable under everyday living conditions. Under such conditions, wearable devices could provide valuable support to monitor vital signs, such as heart rate (HR) and breathing rate (BR). The aim of this study was to develop a model to estimate TV from wearable-device measures of HR and BR during exercise. HR and BR were acquired through the Zephyr Bioharness 3.0 wearable device in nine subjects performing incremental cycling tests. For each subject, TV during exercise was obtained with a metabolic cart (Cosmed). A stepwise regression algorithm was used to create the model using as possible predictors HR, BR, age, and body mass index; the model was then validated using a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation procedure. The performance of the model was evaluated using the explained variance (R-2), obtaining values ranging from 0.65 to 0.72. The proposed model is a valid method for TV estimation with wearable devices and can be considered not subject-specific and not instrumentation-specific
