Effect of equivalent salt deposit density on flashover voltage of contaminated insulator energized by HVDC

    Get PDF
In Malaysia, the demand for electric power is increasing day by day due to more consumption of power in the industrial sector. Recently, the high voltage DC transmission lines are under construction near the coastal environments for transmitting the power to the all states of Malaysia. Therefore, there is a concern about the reliability of these systems especially under adverse environmental conditions due to sea salt spray contamination. This reliability of this contaminated insulator can be improved through its performance studies. For this performance study, an analytical expression between flashover voltage and ESDD of the contaminated insulator has been proposed using Dimensional Analysis technique. The results obtained from the analytical expression are compared with the experimental results and in close agreement are foun

In this study an integrated system for rainwater harvesting and ozone treatment has been developed for continuous supply of drinkable water. In the perspective of Malaysian scenario ozone treatment of rainwater is still considered a new approach. This pilot project is launched to justify the reliability, the effectiveness and the economic aspect of ozone treated rainwater. The samples of rainwater were analyzed for both physiochemical and microbiological parameters before and after the ozone treatment. The injection of ozone has shown prominent improvement in both parameters and also the quality up gradation of the original rainwater. The results are encouraging and suggest that the technique is promising to fulfil both requirements continuous supply of rainwater as well as accomplish successful ozone treatment. The system can readily be installed at any location and measurements assure that it could certainly provide an alternative water source when conventional piped supply is unavailable. In the perspective of Green Building scenario this integrated approach of ozone treated harvested rainwater might be able to reduce the impact of environmental factors. Analysis of Transmission Lightning Arrester Locations Using Tflash

Tropical countries with extensive lightning activity, such as Malaysia, encounter numerous problems on their electrical transmission and distribution systems. Many overhead lines trip because of back flashover of lightning and shielding failures of the grounding system. To overcome the problem and improve transmission line performance, a detailed lightning study is required to analyse the corresponding lines and determine the best location for transmission line arrester (TLA) installation. We used TFlash to analyse a TLA installation on a 132-kV SSWW-BBST overhead transmission line system located in Selangor, Malaysia. Based on the results, the installation of the TLA at the optimum quantity and at appropriate towers have reduced the number of lines that trip

Performance Analysis of a VPV/FC Hybrid System for Generating Electricity in Iraq's Remote Areas

A reliable electrical energy supply is a prerequisite for improving the standard economic and quality of life levels in a country. As is the case in many countries, Iraq is home to a collection of remote villages. Since it is uneconomical to connect these villages to the existing grid, the installation of stand-alone electrical power generators has become common practice. As a result, diesel stand-alone power generators see widespread use in these remote locales, which, whilst fit for their intended purpose, unfortunately suffer from several drawbacks, including instability in regards to everyday oil prices and a number of environmental issues. The implementation of a PV/FC hybrid power system could be one potential alternative to help solve these problems. Therefore, this paper will present PV/FC system control strategies alongside information relating to the performance of such system components, based on a case study that was conducted in Al-Gowair, Iraq. This study is especially important in terms of envisioning the future energy supply needs of Iraq. The HOMER simulation results showed that by using the proposed control strategies and suggested components of a PV/FC system, it was able to produce a satisfactory outcome

Fractal analysis of electrical tree grown in silicone rubber nanocomposites

    Get PDF
Electrical treeing is one of the main reasons for long-term degradation of high voltage insulation especially in the cable accessory which commonly made from silicone rubber due to non-uniformly structures of the cable accessories. Recently, the combination of nanofillers with the silicone rubber matrix can reduce the possibility of the electrical treeing to grow further by changing its patterns and slow-down its propagation. However, the influences of nanofillers on the tree hindrance and its patterns are not well understood. This paper explores the influence of nanofiller on tree pattern in silicon rubber. The electrical tree patterns were characterized using fractal analysis. The box-counting method was used to measure the fractal dimension and lacunarity to obtain the structure of the tree pattern during the electrical tree growth. The structure of the electrical tree in silicone rubber nanocomposites has higher fractal dimension and lacunarity. Sample with nanofiller possesses dominant fractal dimension of tree growth compared to the sample without nanofiller

The high density of lightning occurrence in Malaysiahas caused problems to transmission and distribution electricalenergy. Normally, transmission overhead lines trip due to BackFlashover (BF) of lightning and shielding failures of earth wire. Therefore, a detailed lightning study is required to analyse thecorresponding lines and to determine the exact location ofTransmission Lightning Arrester (TLA). Characterization of cold plasma with glow discharge mechanism of plasma jet system

Cold plasma with glow discharge mechanism exhibiting a uniform ionization process when a background gas passes through the discharge region of the plasma reactor under a certain optimum configuration of input parameters. A glow discharge is a homogeneous and effective mechanism of cold plasma for industrial applications due to the continuous and stable discharge process compared to the filamentary discharge. Meanwhile, the development of glow discharge plasma operated under atmospheric pressure condition is indispensable to overcome the weaknesses of filamentary discharge plasma, such as the nonuniform and discontinuous discharge process. The discharge mechanism is essentially dependent upon the input parameters of the plasma system, such as the amplitude of the voltage supply, the operating frequency, and the flow rate of the background gas. In this paper, the effects of voltage supply on plasma discharge characteristics produced from the plasma jet reactor with the high-voltage electrode are discussed. The value of voltage supply is tuned to be suitable with the discharge gap, frequency supply, and background gas flow rate in producing the homogeneous glow plasma discharge. The characteristics of the glow plasma discharge produced are analyzed based on the pattern of the charge-voltage Lissajous figure and time-domain discharge current techniques. Results show that the most efficient and uniform plasma is disclosed by the configuration of input parameters such as 0.5 kV of supply voltage, 20 kHz of operating frequency, and 0.8 L/min of purified helium gas flow rate. The parallelogram-like Lissajous figure obtained indicating the homogeneous plasma discharge with a constant value of discharge capacitance
