    Defining Software Quality Measures: A Systematic Approach Embedded in the Objectives, Principles, Attributes Framework

    Currently, software quality measures and metrics are being developed in isolation and often without the benefit of a guiding framework. In this paper we describe a systematic process for identifying measurement approaches and defining corresponding metrics that definitively support software quality assessment. That systematic process embodies five well-defined steps that reflect quality assessment within a framework which links the achievement of desirable software engineering objectives to the use of appropriate principles, and the use of principles to the manifestation of desirable product attributes.     The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: How does network improvement science (NIS) impact the recruitment and retention of Black and Latino male teachers? Using multiple sources of data such as Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) documents, video recordings of focus group interviews, self-reflections, informal and formal meetings notes and minutes, our preliminary results revealed that recruitment and retention of Black and Latino male teachers is a complex process that require cross campus collaboration of all stakeholders, the challenging of structures of power, and overcoming institutional and professional barriers.     Extremely Red Objects in the Field of QSO 1213-0017: A Galaxy Concentration at z=1.31

    We have discovered a concentration of extremely red objects (EROs; R-K>6) in the field of the z=2.69 quasar QSO 1213-0017 (UM 485), which is significantly overabundant compared to the field ERO surface density. The optical/near-IR colors of the EROs and numerous other red galaxies in this field are consistent with elliptical galaxies at z=1-2. HST optical images for a subset of galaxies show regular morphologies, most of them being disky or diffuse and without any obvious evidence for interactions. Ground-based IR images show similar morphologies, indicating any dust reddening in these objects is spatially uniform. Optical spectroscopy with the W. M. Keck Telescope has found that four of the red galaxies lie at =1.31, and a fifth lies in the foreground at z=1.20. Of the =1.31 galaxies, one is a reddened AGN while the remaining three have rest-frame UV absorption-line spectra characteristic of old (few Gyr) stellar populations, similar to the old red galaxy LBDS 53W091 at z=1.55. Including the MgII absorber seen in the QSO spectrum, we find five galaxies at =1.31 spread over 1.5 h_50^{-1} Mpc on the sky. These results suggest we have discovered a coherent structure of old galaxies at high-redshift, possibly associated with a massive galaxy cluster.Comment: 37 pages including 11 Postscript figures.     Spatial considerations during cryopreservation of a large volume sample

    AbstractThere have been relatively few studies on the implications of the physical conditions experienced by cells during large volume (litres) cryopreservation – most studies have focused on the problem of cryopreservation of smaller volumes, typically up to 2 ml.This study explores the effects of ice growth by progressive solidification, generally seen during larger scale cryopreservation, on encapsulated liver hepatocyte spheroids, and it develops a method to reliably sample different regions across the frozen cores of samples experiencing progressive solidification.These issues are examined in the context of a Bioartificial Liver Device which requires cryopreservation of a 2 L volume in a strict cylindrical geometry for optimal clinical delivery. Progressive solidification cannot be avoided in this arrangement. In such a system optimal cryoprotectant concentrations and cooling rates are known. However, applying these parameters to a large volume is challenging due to the thermal mass and subsequent thermal lag. The specific impact of this to the cryopreservation outcome is required.Under conditions of progressive solidification, the spatial location of Encapsulated Liver Spheroids had a strong impact on post-thaw recovery. Cells in areas first and last to solidify demonstrated significantly impaired post-thaw function, whereas areas solidifying through the majority of the process exhibited higher post-thaw outcome. It was also found that samples where the ice thawed more rapidly had greater post-thaw viability 24 h post-thaw (75.7 ± 3.9% and 62.0 ± 7.2% respectively).These findings have implications for the cryopreservation of large volumes with a rigid shape and for the cryopreservation of a Bioartificial Liver Device

    Barrel centerline curvature is known to influence the location of projectile shot impacts. Superimposed on the unique manufactured barrel centerline is the flexed barrel shape that can occur prior to firing while the vehicle is on the move. In order to understand and quantify the effects of barrel flexure on gun accuracy, it is necessary to determine what combination of fundamental mode shapes is most likely to occur. A method to accomplish this task is described in this paper. The method is demonstrated by enumerating the 10 most likely flexed barrel shapes that were found to occur in a tank-mounted gun barrel while it traversed a bump course

    A Catalog of 71 Coronal Line Galaxies in MaNGA: [NeV] is an Effective AGN Tracer

    Despite the importance of AGN in galaxy evolution, accurate AGN identification is often challenging, as common AGN diagnostics can be confused by contributions from star formation and other effects (e.g., Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagrams). However, one promising avenue for identifying AGNs are ``coronal emission lines" (``CLs"), which are highly ionized species of gas with ionization potentials ≥\ge 100 eV. These CLs may serve as excellent signatures for the strong ionizing continuum of AGN. To determine if CLs are in fact strong AGN tracers, we assemble and analyze the largest catalog of optical CL galaxies using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) catalog. We detect CL emission in 71 MaNGA galaxies, out of the 10,010 unique galaxies from the final MaNGA catalog, with ≥\ge 5σ\sigma confidence. In our sample, we measure [NeV]λ\lambda3347, λ\lambda3427, [FeVII]λ\lambda3586, λ\lambda3760, λ\lambda6086, and [FeX]λ\lambda6374 emission and crossmatch the CL galaxies with a catalog of AGNs that were confirmed with broad line, X-ray, IR, and radio observations. We find that [NeV] emission, compared to [FeVII] and [FeX] emission, is best at identifying high luminosity AGN. Moreover, we find that the CL galaxies with the least dust extinction yield the most iron CL detections. We posit that the bulk of the iron CLs are destroyed by dust grains in the galaxies with the highest [OIII] luminosities in our sample, and that AGN in the galaxies with low [OIII] luminosities are possibly too weak to be detected using traditional techniques.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 8 table
