South Texas Elegy: Life During a Global Pandemic
South Texas Elegy: Life During a Global Pandemic highlights the narrator’s experience with loss and grief during the coronavirus pandemic, which started in early 2020. This piece is written from the perspective of a narrator living in the Rio Grande Valley, which is in the southmost region of Texas.
This memoir contains thirteen chapters, which discuss deaths of close friends and family members, periods of waiting which occurred in between deaths and updates on the coronavirus, and the narrator’s reflection at the end of the piece. This memoir is a tribute to lost loved ones and an account of an individual’s experiences as someone who lived through the first global pandemic since 1919.
This memoir includes statistics about the coronavirus including death tolls, infected individuals, and the rate at which the virus killed. This piece also includes statistics about heart disease and cancer, which are also discussed throughout the piece
Costs of processing snap beans for freezing in Tennessee
The objectives of this study were: 1. To determine the costs of processing snap beans for freezing in four existing plants. 2. To design model plants for processing snap beans for freez ing at least cost. 3. To determine how the costs vary in model plants according to plant size, less than capacity operation, length of season, size of container, and per cent of recovery. 4. To evaluate the relative efficiency of processors freezing snap beans in Tennessee. Model plants provide a means of reducing costs by incorporating information from existing plants. It is hypothesized that models de-veloped in this study may provide a means for processing under least-cost conditions by evaluating the important factors associated with the costs of processing, namely: plant size, length of season, capacity of operation, size of container, and per cent of recovery. It is possible to evaluate the relative efficiency of the plants processing snap beans for freezing in Tennessee by making direct comparisons with the model plants which have been developed
Strong and Weak: Embracing a Life of Love, Risk, and True Flourishing
to flourish, one must master the delicate balance of authority— defined by the author as “the capacity for meaningful action,” (loc 35)— and vulnerability, or, “exposure to meaningful risk” (loc 40). If that balance of authority becomes out of balance, we fall into the pitfalls of “exploiting” (authority without vulnerability), or “suffering” (vulnerability without authority), or worst of all, “withdrawing” (an absence of both)

Tear film structure of the contact lens wearer
New techniques are proven in this thesis which allow the visual examination of the tear film on the cornea and on different types of contact lenses. The techniques are as follows: 1. A high magnification technique of photography using the biamtcroscope and crossed polartsed light, allows the measurement of tear film layer thicknesses and on the surface of rigid contact lenses and invivo receding contact angle'. 2. A low magnification technique of photography allows the record i rig and the analysis of the superficial layers of the tear film over aw ice area of the eye and contact lens surface. 5. A clinical instrument has been designed for the routine clinical observation of the tear film. It permits the visual measurement of the tear film break-up time (BUT) without the use of fluorescein. 4. A unique technique of in-vivo photography of the mucous coverage of the corneal epithelial surface and contact lens surfaces is presented. Such techniques improve the understanding of surface wettability problems. As a result of this work the appearance of the normal lipid layer of the pre-ocular tear film has been classified into seven grades within a thickness range of 0.02μm to 0.58pm. As we well as the normal, two examples of abnormal lipid layers are described. The manner by which Meibomian 91 and secret i on occurs and performs its role in the tear film is illustrated and analysed. Forced gland secretion by pressure induced localised lipid thickness increase. Eyelid closure was seen to compress the lipid film and instillation of saline broke up the lipid film. It can be seen that the pre-soft lens tear film usually possesses a thin superficial lipid layer and an aqueous phase of limited dimensions. On the other hand the pre-PI1MA rigid contact I ens tear film rarely possesses a visible superficial Ii pi d layer and its aqueous layer measured 1.5μm on average. The addition the 'wetting' solution acts on the thickness of the aqueous phase which increases to 2.5μm and . supports a minimal lipid layer. The use of contact lens materials of better wettability permits the formation of films of increased thickness (up to 5.5μm) with a visible superficial lipid layer which was seen to stabilise the film and retard its drying. The main differences in mucous coverage are described as follows. At the level of the basal layer of the tear film the mucous coverage takes a continuous undulated form on the cornea I epithelium but a discontinuous sporadic distribution on soft lenses decreasing to sporadic occurrence on rigid lenses. Finally. because of the acquisition of the quantitative results, new infra-structures of the pre lens tear film for soft and rigid lenses are proposed
Community practice and religion at an Early Islamic cemetery in highland Central Asia
Archaeological studies of Early Islamic communities in Central Asia have focused on lowland urban communities. Here, the authors report on recent geophysical survey and excavation of an Early Islamic cemetery at Tashbulak in south-eastern Uzbekistan. AMS dating places the establishment of the cemetery in the mid-eighth century AD, making it one of the earliest Islamic burial grounds documented in Central Asia. Burials at Tashbulak conform to Islamic prescriptions for grave form and body deposition. The consistency in ritual suggests the existence of a funerary community of practice, challenging narratives of Islamic conversion in peripheral areas as a process of slow diffusion and emphasising the importance of archaeological approaches for documenting the diversity of Early Islamic communities.Introduction Background and rationale The site of Tashbulak Islamic burial The Tashbulak cemetery - Burial forms - Body treatment - Demographic profile - Chronology Discussion Conclusio
