    Evaluation of the interaction between seepage from a municipal waste stabilization lagoon, McVille, North Dakota, and a shallow unconfined aquifer

    The McVille, North Dakota, Municipal Waste Stabilization Lagoon is situated above the McVille Aquifer, an unconfined glaciofluvial aquifer capable of significant water yields. The site contains a 3-D network of 29 monitoring wells. Standing waste-water is maintained in the clay-lined, primary-operating cell. Operating practices at the site entail periodic discharges of waste-water from the lined cell to an unlined cell, a procedure which results in rapid infiltration. The shape and extent of the groundwater contaminant plume caused by the waste-stabilization process is best delineated by the distribution of chloride. Background wells contain less than 10 mg/L chloride. The area up to 60 m downgradient of the lined cell contains chloride levels at the waste water mean concentration of 256 mg/L. Further downgradient, the chloride levels decrease gradually to 130 mg/L, at a distance of 220 m from the lined cell. Contoured concentrations of total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity display a similar subelliptical plume shape. These three parameters are essentially nonreactive and appear to be attenuated by hydrodynamic dispersion. Water-table elevations, redox potential and water chemistry, which were determined before and after discharge of waste water into the unlined cell, did not demonstrate a distinct effect resulting from this event. A slight rise in the water table elevations was detected 3 days after the discharge. The most important hydrogeochemical interactions are a result of redox processes controlled by anaerobic bacteria. The infiltrating waste~water contains high disorganic carbon (DOC) concentrations. Oxidation of DOC I the aquifer results in lowering of the redox potential. Sulfate concentrations decrease beneath and shortly downgradient of the lined cell, as sulfate is reduced to sulfite, Elevated Fe and Mn levels immediately downgradient of the lined and unlined cells indicate reduction and dissolution of solid phases. Arsenic concentrations in this same area, where adsorbed ions are liberated as t e iron phase dissolves. The abrupt downgradient detion decrease in Fe, Mn and As suggests precipitation or adsorpelements. Field measured redox potentials extent of a plume of reducing water, along with the afore-mentioned inorganic constituents. The measured pe gradually increases, approaching background levels at the extreme downgradient edge of the site. High ammonium values, up to four times the level within the waste-water, are present within the plume of reducing groundwater. High nitrate waters are contributed upgradient of the lagoon. Beneath and downgradient of the lagoon, the dissimilatory reduction of nitrate by anoxic Bactria forms ammonium. Ammonium is attenuated by adsorption and ion exchange. For Ca and Mg

    The Brown-dwarf Atmosphere Monitoring (BAM) Project II: Multi-epoch monitoring of extremely cool brown dwarfs

    With the discovery of Y dwarfs by the WISE mission, the population of field brown dwarfs now extends to objects with temperatures comparable to those of Solar System planets. To investigate the atmospheres of these newly identified brown dwarfs, we have conducted a pilot study monitoring an initial sample of three late T-dwarfs (T6.5, T8 and T8.5) and one Y-dwarf (Y0) for infrared photometric variability at multiple epochs. With J-band imaging, each target was observed for a period of 1.0h to 4.5h per epoch, which covers a significant fraction of the expected rotational period. These measurements represent the first photometric monitoring for these targets. For three of the four targets (2M1047, Ross 458C and WISE0458), multi-epoch monitoring was performed, with the time span between epochs ranging from a few hours to ~2 years. During the first epoch, the T8.5 target WISE0458 exhibited variations with a remarkable min-to-max amplitude of 13%, while the second epoch light curve taken ~2 years later did not note any variability to a 3% upper limit. With an effective temperature of ~600 K, WISE0458 is the coldest variable brown dwarf published to-date, and combined with its high and variable amplitude makes it a fascinating target for detailed follow-up. The three remaining targets showed no significant variations, with a photometric precision between 0.8% and 20.0%, depending on the target brightness. Combining the new results with previous multi-epoch observations of brown dwarfs with spectral types of T5 or later, the currently identified variables have locations on the colour-colour diagram better matched by theoretical models incorporating cloud opacities rather than cloud-free atmospheres. This preliminary result requires further study to determine if there is a definitive link between variability among late-T dwarfs and their location on the colour-colour diagram.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    In the midst of a tumultuous time in American and global history, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Annual Conference 2021 hosted a panel to explore the promise and limits of media literacy. Panelists discussed the vital role of media literacy education in responding to challenges to democracy, social justice, and public health. With “everything at stake,” the panelists moved through responses to current crises while grounding in a historical context and offering recommendations for the future. Curated transcripts share a pivotal moment when much was expected of media literacy and media literacy experts explored promise and possibility with an engaged audience of journalists and journalism educators

    Needs assessment of school and community physical activity opportunities in rural West Virginia: the McDowell CHOICES planning effort

    Background McDowell CHOICES (Coordinated Health Opportunities Involving Communities, Environments, and Schools) Project is a county wide endeavor aimed at increasing opportunities for physical activity (PA) in McDowell County, West Virginia (WV). A comprehensive needs-assessment laid the foundation of the project. Methods During the 6 month needs assessment, multiple sources of data were collected in two Town Hall Meetings (n = 80); a student online PA interest survey (n = 465); a PA and nutrition survey among 5th (10–11 years) and 8th graders (13–14 years) with questions adapted from the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (n = 442, response rate = 82.2%); six semi-structured school and community focus groups (n = 44); school site visits (n = 11); and BMI screening (n = 550, response rate = 69.7%). Results One third of children in McDowell County meet the national PA minimum of 60 minutes daily. At least 40% of 5th and 8th graders engage in electronic screen activity for 3 hours or more every day. The prevalence of obesity in 5th graders is higher in McDowell County than the rest of WV (~55% vs. 47% respectively). SWOT analyses of focus group data suggest an overall interest in PA but also highlight a need for increase in structured PA opportunities. Focus group data also suggested that a central communication (e.g. internet-based) platform would be beneficial to advertise and boost participation both in current and future programs. Schools were commonly mentioned as potential facilities for public PA participation throughout the county, both with regards to access and convenience. School site visits suggest that schools need more equipment and resources for before, during, and after school programs. Conclusions An overwhelming majority of participants in the McDowell CHOICES needs assessment were interested to participate in more PA programs throughout the county as well as to improve opportunities for the provision of such programs. Public schools were widely recognized as the hub of the communities and provide the best venue for PA promotion for both students and adult citizens, and can potentially serve as a platform for change in rural communities such as McDowell County

    The Taurus Boundary of Stellar/Substellar (TBOSS) Survey II. Disk Masses from ALMA Continuum Observations

    We report 885μ\mum ALMA continuum flux densities for 24 Taurus members spanning the stellar/substellar boundary, with spectral types from M4 to M7.75. Of the 24 systems, 22 are detected at levels ranging from 1.0-55.6 mJy. The two non-detections are transition disks, though other transition disks in the sample are detected. Converting ALMA continuum measurements to masses using standard scaling laws and radiative transfer modeling yields dust mass estimates ranging from \sim0.3-20M_{\oplus}. The dust mass shows a declining trend with central object mass when combined with results from submillimeter surveys of more massive Taurus members. The substellar disks appear as part of a continuous sequence and not a distinct population. Compared to older Upper Sco members with similar masses across the substellar limit, the Taurus disks are brighter and more massive. Both Taurus and Upper Sco populations are consistent with an approximately linear relationship in MdustM_{dust} to MstarM_{star}, although derived power-law slopes depend strongly upon choices of stellar evolutionary model and dust temperature relation. The median disk around early M-stars in Taurus contains a comparable amount of mass in small solids as the average amount of heavy elements in Kepler planetary systems on short-period orbits around M-dwarf stars, with an order of magnitude spread in disk dust mass about the median value. Assuming a gas:dust ratio of 100:1, only a small number of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs have a total disk mass amenable to giant planet formation, consistent with the low frequency of giant planets orbiting M-dwarfs.Comment: 41 pages and 32 figures, with all tables and appendices presented here in their entirety.     Submillimeter observations of IRAS and WISE debris disk candidates

    A set of six debris disk candidates identified with IRAS or WISE excesses were observed at either 350 μm or 450 μm with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Five of the targets – HIP 51658, HIP 68160, HIP 73512, HIP 76375, and HIP 112460 – have among the largest measured excess emission from cold dust from IRAS in the 25–100 μm bands. Single temperature blackbody fits to the excess dust emission of these sources predict 350–450 μm fluxes above 240 mJy. The final target – HIP 73165 – exhibits weak excess emission above the stellar photosphere from WISE measurements at 22 μm, indicative of a population of warm circumstellar dust. None of the six targets were detected, with 3σ upper limits ranging from 51–239 mJy. These limits are significantly below the expected fluxes from SED fitting. Two potential causes of the null detections were explored – companion stars and contamination. To investigate the possible influence of companion stars, imaging data were analyzed from new adaptive optics data from the ARIES instrument on the 6.5 m MMT and archival HST, Gemini NIRI, and POSS/2MASS data. The images are sensitive to all stellar companions beyond a radius of 1–94 AU, with the inner limit depending on the distance and brightness of each target. One target is identified as a binary system, but with a separation too large to impact the disk. While the gravitational effects of a companion do not appear to provide an explanation for the submm upper limits, the majority of the IRAS excess targets show evidence for contaminating sources, based on investigation of higher resolution WISE and archival Spitzer and Herschel images. Finally, the exploratory submm measurements of the WISE excess source suggest that the hot dust present around these targets is not matched by a comparable population of colder, outer dust. More extensive and more sensitive Herschel observations of WISE excess sources will build upon this initial example to further define the characteristics of warm debris disks sources

    The VAST Survey - I. Companions and the unexpected X-ray detection of B6-A7 stars

    With an adaptive optics imaging survey of 148 B6-A7 stars, we have tested the hypothesis that unresolved lower-mass companions are the source of the unexpected X-ray detections of stars in this spectral type range. The sample is composed of 63 stars detected in X-rays within the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and 85 stars that form a control sample; both subsets have the same restricted distribution of spectral type, age, X-ray sensitivity and separation coverage. A total of 68 companion candidates are resolved with separations ranging from 0.3" to 26.2", with 23 new detections. The multiple star frequency of the X-ray sample based on companions resolved within the ROSAT error ellipse is found to be 43 (+6,-6)%. The corresponding control sample multiple star frequency is three times lower at 12 (+4,-3)% -- a difference of 31\pm7%.
