Two-stage Convolutional Part Heatmap Regression for the 1st 3D Face Alignment in the Wild (3DFAW) Challenge

This paper describes our submission to the 1st 3D Face Alignment in the Wild (3DFAW) Challenge. Our method builds upon the idea of convolutional part heatmap regression [1], extending it for 3D face alignment. Our method decomposes the problem into two parts: (a) X,Y (2D) estimation and (b) Z (depth) estimation. At the first stage, our method estimates the X,Y coordinates of the facial landmarks by producing a set of 2D heatmaps, one for each landmark, using convolutional part heatmap regression. Then, these heatmaps, alongside the input RGB image, are used as input to a very deep subnetwork trained via residual learning for regressing the Z coordinate. Our method ranked 1st in the 3DFAW Challenge, surpassing the second best result by more than 22%.Comment: Winner of 3D Face Alignment in the Wild (3DFAW) Challenge, ECCV 201

Optimized Effective Potentials in Finite Basis Sets

The finite basis optimized effective potential (OEP) method within density functional theory is examined as an ill-posed problem. It is shown that the generation of nonphysical potentials is a controllable manifestation of the use of unbalanced, and thus unsuitable, basis sets. A modified functional incorporating a regularizing smoothness measure of the OEP is introduced. This provides a condition on balanced basis sets for the potential, as well as a method to determine the most appropriate OEP potential and energy from calculations performed with any finite basis set.Comment: 23 pages, 28 figure

Determining apparent exhumation from Chalk outcrop samples, Cleveland Basin/East Midlands Shelf.

Porosity measurements of 22 Upper Cretaceous Chalk samples, and mean Chalk porosities derived from sonic logs in three wells, were used to quantify apparent exhumation (height above maximum burial-depth) in the onshore Cleveland Basin/East Midlands Shelf. Late Cretaceous/Tertiary exhumation of the East Midlands Shelf resulted in the removal of 1.2 km of section near the coast and more than 2 km of section inland, to the west. The southern margin of the Cleveland Basin was exhumed by 2 km, and exhumation increases northwards towards the recognized inversion axis running east–west along the basin’s centre. The northwards increasing exhumation associated with the east–west trending inversion axis of the Cleveland Basin is superimposed upon the regional westward trend of increasing exhumation of eastern England. These two trends control the outcrop distribution of the Upper Cretaceous Chalk in the Cleveland Basin/East Midlands Shelf.Robert J. Menpes and Richard R. Hilli

AbstractThe impact of the Golden Horde on the formation of the Russian state. This article addresses issues related to eastern influence on the Muscovite political system between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. Despite Russian and Soviet historians’ long-standing interest in this subject, the latter is far from being exhausted. The author presents his own view on such questions as the position of northeastern Russian principalities in the Golden Horde state composition, the reasons for the rise of the Muscovite principality in the fifteenth century, and the status of the Muscovite ruler in the legal system of “Pax Mongolica.” Among other things, he analyzes the establishment of the pomestie system (land granted for service) in Russia, the importance of the conquest of the Volga khanates for the international position of the Muscovite state, and co-regency. In concluding, the author states the great significance of the Golden Horde factor in Russian political history

The paper presents a study of binders of different composition for investment casting, which are safe from the point of view of ecology and safety for human life and health, have a long life-span, stable properties, provide increased gas permeability of forms and a lesser tendency to cracking, and as a result, ensure the production of quality castings. The proposed binder can be used on a par with the traditional, if you introduce spirit into it as a solvent. The introduction of acetone is impractical, because it promotes gelation of the solution, which makes it difficult to continue working with the binder. The gelling process is the coalescence of colloidal particles which causes an increase in the viscosity of the solution. The proposed binder has the following advantages over the traditional ones: it is water-based, non-flammable, non-toxic, environmentally safe; suspensions based on them have longer vitality, more permanent properties and require minimal maintenance; provide increased gas permeability of forms and their less tendency to cracking. Purposes: The crisis in modern humanitarian science testifies to the need to search for a new approach that goes beyond the boundaries of the natural-science approach, which in its turn involves addressing to the origins of our culture, expanding the categorical apparatus and methodological basis of psychology. In individual consciousness, the spiritual crisis is expressed in the loss of the ideals of life. Therefore, at the present stage of the development of society, the need for a philosophical and psychological analysis of spiritual and moral ideas and their role in the formation of the individual is felt with particular severity. Methodology: In the framework of the activity approach embodied in the works of S. L. Rubinstein, the main provisions were formulated, which are of special methodological importance for the solution of this problem. In particular, these are provisions on the study of the human psyche through its manifestations in the main types of activity and the influence on the activities of external causes, not directly, but indirectly, through its internal, psychological conditions. Results: This article is devoted to the description of the results of an empirical study carried out from the position of the activity approach and aimed at revealing the level of ethical behavior of adolescence and youth ages. The urgency of the study is due to the fact that the tendency of the transition from the theoretical-descriptive to the experimental-developing technology of research of ethical characteristics is clearly manifested in the work. Implications/Applications: This article could be practical in predicting the problems regarding the study of Ethical Characteristics of person and help the audience to broaden their information in this vein. Novelty/Originality: In one case, the individual in the process of communicating with other people, assimilates universal values, the experience of moral relations, develops beliefs and moral ideals, in the other can under the influence of communication become attached to completely opposite values, degrade morall

Fs-detr: Few-shot detection transformer with prompting and without re-training

    Get PDF
This paper is on Few-Shot Object Detection (FSOD), where given a few templates (examples) depicting a novel class (not seen during training), the goal is to detect all of its occurrences within a set of images. From a practical perspective, an FSOD system must fulfil the following desiderata: (a) it must be used as is, without requiring any fine-tuning at test time, (b) it must be able to process an arbitrary number of novel objects concurrently while supporting an arbitrary number of examples from each class and (c) it must achieve accuracy comparable to a closed system. Towards satisfying (a)-(c), in this work, we make the following contributions: We introduce, for the first time, a simple, yet powerful, few-shot detection transformer (FS-DETR) based on visual prompting that can address both desiderata (a) and (b). Our system builds upon the DETR framework, extending it based on two key ideas: (1) feed the provided visual templates of the novel classes as visual prompts during test time, and (2) “stamp” these prompts with pseudo-class embeddings (akin to soft prompting), which are then predicted at the output of the decoder. Importantly, we show that our system is not only more flexible than existing methods, but also, it makes a step towards satisfying desideratum (c). Specifically, it is significantly more accurate than all methods that do not require fine-tuning and even matches and outperforms the current state-of-the-art fine-tuning based methods on the most well-established benchmarks (PASCAL VOC & MSCOCO)

Study of dynamical instabilities in Siemens liquid spray injectors using complementary modal decomposition techniques

    Get PDF
Liquid fuel spray characterisation is essential for understanding the mechanisms underlying fuel energy release and pollutant formation. Careful selection of operating conditions can promote flow instabilities in the fuel spray which can enhance atomisation and fuel mixing, thereby resulting in more efficient combustion. However, the inherent instabilities present in the spray could have adverse effect on the combustor dynamics. Hence, it is important to better understand the dynamical behaviour of the spray, and particularly at representative operating conditions. This work describes an experimental investigation of dynamical behaviour of pressure-swirl atomisers used in Siemens industrial gas turbine combustors, at a range of chamber pressures and fuel injection pressures, using high speed laser planar imaging. Two modal decomposition techniques — Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) — are applied and compared to assess the spray dynamics. Results indicate that both POD and DMD are able to capture periodic structures occurring in the spray at different spatial length scales. The characteristic frequencies estimated from both the methods are in good agreement with each other. Both techniques are able to identify coherent structures with variable size, shape and level of staggering, which are observed to be dependent on the pressure difference across the atomiser and the chamber pressure. The spatio-temporally resolved data and the results could be used for spray model development and validation. Furthermore, the methods employed could be applied to other fuel atomisers, and more complicated conditions involving cross flow and higher chamber temperatures
