What Leading Alfalfa Growers Do to Produce Quality Hay

    Get PDF
Alfalfa is the highest quality forage legume crop grown in Kentucky and is the number one cash hay crop. Hay raised by Kentucky farmers has been recognized for its quality at local, state (state fair and Kentucky Alfalfa Conference), and national (American Forage and Grassland Council) hay contests. The testing records of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture also document the high quality alfalfa hay of Kentucky. However, little has been written about the farm practices used to produce high quality alfalfa hay in Kentucky. The current practices of top hay growers may be helpful in defining the options available to all growers to construct an alfalfa hay management system to maximize the economic returns of this valuable crop

    Design Audits.

    Get PDF
Tutorialpg. 153-168Dynamic design audits of machinery can identify potential problems before the machine is manufactured, thus preventing costly project delays and downtime. The types of audits that should be performed are discussed and typical analysis results are presented along with guidelines as to their interpretation

Performance of TEM-PCR vs Culture for Bacterial Identification in Pediatric Musculoskeletal Infections

    Get PDF
Improved diagnostics are needed for children with musculoskeletal infections (MSKIs). We assessed the performance of target-enriched multiplex polymerase chain reaction (TEM-PCR) in children with MSKI. TEM-PCR was concordant with culture in pathogen identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing, while increasing the overall yield of pathogen detection. This technology has the potential to inform judicious antimicrobial use early in the disease course

Home Ranges and Habitat Use of Brown Pelicans (\u3ci\u3ePelecanus occidentalis\u3c/i\u3e) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Little is known about movements and habitat use of Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. We attached satellite transmitters to 18 adult Brown Pelicans (nine males, nine females) that were captured on Grand Isle along the Louisiana coast during 31 August-2 September 2010. Their movements and habitat use were tracked between September 2010 and March 2012. Nine of the Brown Pelicans remained proximate to the Louisiana coast; four ranged along the coasts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana; three moved from Louisiana to Texas; and two migrated across the Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatan Peninsula. Annual 99% home range estimates varied widely ( = 10,611 km2, SE = 2,370), and males had larger ranges ( = 15,088 km2, SE = 2,219) than females ( = 6,133 km2, SE = 1,764). Habitats used by Brown Pelicans were primarily open water, estuarine emergent wetland, grassland, unconsolidated shore, and deep water habitat types

    Piping Vibration Analysis.

    Get PDF
Tutorialpg. 119-134Excessive piping vibrations are a major cause of machinery downtime, leaks, fatigue failures, high noise, fires, and explosions in refineries and petrochemical plants. Excessive vibration levels usually occur when a mechanical natural frequency of the piping system is excited by some pulsation or mechanical source. The vibration mode shapes usually involve lateral vibrations and/or shell wall radial vibrations. Simplified methods are presented for analyzing lateral and shell wall piping vibrations and judging their severity. The methods are thought to be conservative and are intended to be used as screening criteria to determine if more sophisticated analyses, such as computer stress modelling or strain gage testing are necessary. Frequency factors for calculating the mechanical natural frequencies for the classical piping configurations (uniform straight beams) and various piping bend configurations are presented. Factors are presented to compensate the natural frequency calculations for concentrated and distributed weight effects. The relationships between piping vibration displacement, velocity and stress are presented and criteria for judging the severity of piping vibration in terms of the endurance stress limit are shown. The mechanisms that can excite piping vibrations will be discussed, as well as methods for controlling their severity
