    Measurements of Distributed Strain During Impact Pile Driving

    This paper reports the use of optical Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors to monitor the stress waves generated below ground during pile driving, combined with measurements using conventional pile driving analyzer (PDA) sensors mounted at the pile head. Fourteen tubular steel piles with a diameter of 508 mm and embedded length to diameter ratios of 6 to 20 were impact driven at an established chalk test site in Kent, UK. The pile shafts were instrumented with multiple FBG strain gauges and pile head PDA sensors, which monitored the piles’ responses under each hammer blow. A high frequency (5 kHz) fibre optic interrogator allowed a previously unseen resolution of the stress wave propagation along the pile. Estimates of the base soil resistances to driving and distributions of shaft shear resistances were found through signal matching that compared time series of pile head PDA measurements and FBG strains measured below ground surface. Numerical solutions of the one-dimensional wave equation were optimised by taking account of the data from multiple FBG gauges, leading to significant advantages that have potential for widespread application in cases where high resolution strain measurements are made

    Global DNA methylation and cognitive and behavioral outcomes at 4 years of age: A cross‐sectional study

    Background Accumulating evidence suggests that breastfeeding exclusivity and duration are positively associated with child cognition. This study investigated whether DNA methylation, an epigenetic mechanism modified by nutrient intake, may contribute to the link between breastfeeding and child cognition. The aim was to quantify the relationship between global DNA methylation and cognition and behavior at 4 years of age. Methods Child behavior and cognition were measured at age 4 years using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, third version (WPPSI‐III), and Child Behavior Checklist (CBC). Global DNA methylation (%5‐methylcytosines (%5mC)) was measured in buccal cells at age 4 years, using an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) commercial kit. Linear regression models were used to quantify the statistical relationships. Results Data were collected from 73 children recruited from the Women and Their Children's Health (WATCH) study. No statistically significant associations were found between global DNA methylation levels and child cognition or behavior (p > .05), though the estimates of effect were consistently negative. Global DNA methylation levels in males were significantly higher than in females (median %5mC: 1.82 vs. 1.03, males and females, respectively, (p < .05)). Conclusion No association was found between global DNA methylation and child cognition and behavior; however given the small sample, this study should be pooled with other cohorts in future meta‐analyses

    Heat treatment of cold extruded polycarbonate: Some implications for design engineers

    Polycarbonate was subjected to various combinations of mechanical - thermal histories to investigate such effects on subsequent tensile mechanical properties. This was accomplished by "cold extruding" the material initially; nominal "reductions in area" of 18, 40 and 64% were used. Cold extruded bars were then heat treated at three temperature levels, all being less than Tg (150[deg]C) of polycarbonate. As compared with the material that was only cold extruded, it was found that in general, heat treating tends to raise the yield stress while lowering the tensile strength, elastic modulus and stress at fracture.     The Theory/Applications Balance in Management Pedagogy: Where Do We Stand?

    Business schools are expected to be "professional" in the sense that their mission is primarily to prepare people to practice their skills in the business world. Various critics, however, claim that management professors overemphasize theory and research and neglect the practice and applications students need to transfer classroom theory to the world of practice. This study compared an earlier sample with a more recent sample of Academy of Management members concerning the relative emphasis they believed should be placed on theory and applications in management pedagogy and the techniques they used to bring applications into the classroom. Current respondents believed that more emphasis should be placed on applications than the earlier respondents. An unexpected finding, however, was that the more recent respondents reported a lower mean usage of pedagogical techniques that are appropriate for developing students' ability to apply course concepts than the previous group.     Indirect Dark Matter Detection from Dwarf Satellites: Joint Expectations from Astrophysics and Supersymmetry

    We present a general methodology for determining the gamma-ray flux from annihilation of dark matter particles in Milky Way satellite galaxies, focusing on two promising satellites as examples: Segue 1 and Draco. We use the SuperBayeS code to explore the best-fitting regions of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) parameter space, and an independent MCMC analysis of the dark matter halo properties of the satellites using published radial velocities. We present a formalism for determining the boost from halo substructure in these galaxies and show that its value depends strongly on the extrapolation of the concentration-mass (c(M)) relation for CDM subhalos down to the minimum possible mass. We show that the preferred region for this minimum halo mass within the CMSSM with neutralino dark matter is ~10^-9-10^-6 solar masses. For the boost model where the observed power-law c(M) relation is extrapolated down to the minimum halo mass we find average boosts of about 20, while the Bullock et al (2001) c(M) model results in boosts of order unity. We estimate that for the power-law c(M) boost model and photon energies greater than a GeV, the Fermi space-telescope has about 20% chance of detecting a dark matter annihilation signal from Draco with signal-to-noise greater than 3 after about 5 years of observation

    Effect of denosumab on osteolytic lesion activity after total hip arthroplasty: a single-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, proof of concept trial

    Background Osteolysis causes recurrent pain and disability after total hip arthroplasty. We investigated the effect of the human monoclonal antibody denosumab on osteolytic lesion activity in patients undergoing revision total hip arthroplasty surgery to show the biological proof of concept for a non-surgical treatment for the disease. Methods We did a phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, proof of concept superiority trial at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield, UK. Eligible patients aged 30 years or older and scheduled for revision surgery for symptomatic, radiographically confirmed osteolysis were randomly allocated (1:1) to subcutaneous denosumab (60 mg single-dose) or placebo by an independent pharmacist using a random number table. The primary outcome was the between-group difference in osteoclast number per mm of bone surface of biopsies taken from the osteolytic membrane–bone interface at surgery 8 weeks later, measured by quantitative histomorphometry in all patients who underwent revision surgery. Adverse events were analysed in all randomly assigned participants. This trial is registered with the EU Clinical Trials Register (EudraCT 2011-000541-20). Findings Between Dec 12, 2012, and June 24, 2018, 51 patients were assessed for eligibility, of whom 24 were randomly assigned to study treatment. Two patients had their revision surgery cancelled for unrelated reasons, leaving 22 patients (ten in the denosumab group) for analysis of the primary outcome. There were 83% fewer osteoclasts at the osteolysis membrane–bone interface in the denosumab versus the placebo group (median 0·05 per mm [IQR 0·11] vs 0·30 mm [0·40], p=0·011). No deaths or treatment-related serious adverse events occurred. Seven adverse events, including one severe adverse event, occurred in four (36%) of 11 patients in the denosumab group. In the placebo group ten adverse events, including three severe adverse events, occurred in five (38%) of 13 patients. Interpretation To our knowledge, this is the first clinical trial of an investigational drug for osteolysis that shows tissue-specific biological efficacy. These results justify the need for future trials that target earlier-stage disease to test for clinical efficacy in reducing the need for revision surgery. Funding Amgen

    CP asymmetries in the supersymmetric trilepton signal at the LHC

    In the CP-violating Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, we study the production of a neutralino-chargino pair at the LHC. For their decays into three leptons, we analyze CP asymmetries which are sensitive to the CP phases of the neutralino and chargino sector. We present analytical formulas for the entire production and decay process, and identify the CP-violating contributions in the spin correlation terms. This allows us to define the optimal CP asymmetries. We present a detailed numerical analysis of the cross sections, branching ratios, and the CP observables. For light neutralinos, charginos, and squarks, the asymmetries can reach several 10%.     Puzzling blue dips in the black hole candidate Swift J1357.2−0933, from ULTRACAM, SALT, ATCA, Swift and NuSTAR

    We present rapid, multiwavelength photometry of the low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1357.2-0933 during its 2017 outburst. Using several sets of quasi-simultaneous ULTRACAM/NTT (optical), NuSTAR (X-ray), XRT/Swift (X-ray), SALT (optical) and ATCA (radio) observations taken during outburst decline, we confirm the frequent optical dipping that has previously been noted both in outburst and in quiescence. We also find: 1) that the dip frequency decreases as the outburst decays, similar to what was seen in the previous outburst, 2) that the dips produce a shape similar to that in binary systems with partial disc occultations, 3) that the source becomes significantly bluer during these dips, indicating an unusual geometry compared to other LMXB dippers, and 4) that dip superposition analysis confirms the lack of an X-ray response to the optical dips. These very unusual properties appear to be unique to Swift J1357.2−0933, and are likely the result of a high binary inclination, as inferred from features such as its very low outburst X-ray luminosity. From this analysis as well as X-ray/optical timing correlations, we suggest a model with multi-component emission/absorption features with differing colours. This could include the possible presence of a sporadically occulted jet base and a recessed disc. This source still hosts many puzzling features, with consequences for the very faint X-ray transients population
