Phyllodon scutellifolius is known only from one (possibly two) collections from Madagascar, and Glossadelphus serpyllifolius is a synonym of Bryocrumia vivicolor

    Sown pasture rundown and declining soil fertility for forage crops are too serious to ignore with losses in beef production of up to 50% across Queensland. The feasibility of using strategic applications of nitrogen (N) fertiliser to address these losses was assessed by analysing a series of scenarios using data drawn from published studies, local fertiliser trials and expert opinion. While N fertilser can dramatically increase productivity (growth, feed quality and beef production gains of over 200% in some scenarios), the estimated economic benefits, derived from paddock level enterprise budgets for a fattening operation, were much more modest. In the best-performing sown grass scenarios, average gross margins were doubled or tripled at the assumed fertiliser response rates, and internal rates of return of up to 11% were achieved. Using fertiliser on forage sorghum or oats was a much less attractive option and, under the paddock level analysis and assumptions used, forages struggled to be profitable even on fertile sites with no fertiliser input. The economics of nitrogen fertilising on grass pasture were sensitive to the assumed response rates in both pasture growth and liveweight gain. Consequently, targeted research is proposed to re-assess the responses used in this analysis, which are largely based on research 25-40 years ago when soils were generally more fertile and pastures less rundown

    Mechanistic analysis of an asymmetric palladium-catalyzed conjugate addition of arylboronic acids to β-substituted cyclic enones.

    An asymmetric palladium-catalyzed conjugate addition reaction of arylboronic acids to enone substrates was investigated mechanistically. Desorption electrospray ionization coupled to mass spectrometry was used to identify intermediates of the catalytic cycle and delineate differences in substrate reactivity. Our findings provide evidence for the catalytic cycle proceeding through formation of an arylpalladium(II) cation, subsequent formation of an arylpalladium-enone complex, and, ultimately, formation of the new C-C bond. Reaction monitoring in both positive and negative ion modes revealed that 4-iodophenylboronic acid formed a relatively stable trimeric species under the reaction conditions

    Stroke mimics transported by emergency medical services to a comprehensive stroke center : the magnitude of the problem

    Background: Despite the use of validated prehospital stroke screens, stroke mimics are frequent among patients transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Emergency Department. We aimed to describe the frequency and characteristics of neurological and non-neurological mimics transported to a comprehensive stroke center for acute stroke evaluation. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of a database consisting of all consecutive patients with suspected stroke transported to the Emergency Department of a comprehensive stroke center during an 18-month period. Hospital charts and neuroimaging were utilized to adjudicate the final diagnosis (acute stroke, stroke mimic, and specific underlying diagnoses). Results: 950 patients were transported with suspected stroke, among whom 405 (42.6%) were stroke mimics (age 66.9±17.1 years; 54% male). Neurological mimics were diagnosed in 223 (55.1%) patients and mimics were non-neurological in 182. The most common neurological diagnoses were seizures (19.7%), migraines (18.8%) and peripheral neuropathies (11.2%). Cardiovascular (14.6%) and psychiatric (11.9%) diagnoses were common non-neurological mimics. Patients with neurological mimic were younger (64.1±17.3 years vs. 70.5±16.1 years, p<0.001) and had less vascular risk factors than non-neurological mimics. The proportion of non-neurological mimics remained high (38%) despite the use of a prehospital identification scale. Conclusion: Stroke mimics are common among patients transported by Emergency Medical Services to a comprehensive stroke center for suspected stroke, with a considerable proportion being non-neurological in origin. Studies refining triage and transport of suspected acute stroke may be warranted to minimize the number of mimics transported by to a comprehensive stroke center for acute stroke evaluation

    Review of productivity decline in sown grass pastures

    Productivity decline in sown grass pastures is widespread in northern Australia and reduces production by approximately 50%, a farm gate cost to industry of > $17B over the next 30 years. Buffel grass is the most widely established sown species (>75% of plantings) and has been estimated to be “dominant” on 5.8 M hectares and “common” on a further 25.9 M hectares of Queensland. Legumes are the most cost effective mitigation option and can reclaim 30-50% of lost production. Commercial use of legumes has achieved mixed results with notable successes but many failures. There is significant opportunity to improve commercial results from legumes using existing technologies, however there is a need for targeted research to improve the reliability of establishment and productivity of legumes. This review recommends the grazing industry invest in targeted R,D&E to assist industry in improving production and sustainability of rundown pastures

    A Randomized Controlled Trial of Tenecteplase Versus Standard of Care for Minor Ischemic Stroke with Proven Occlusion (TEMPO-2): Rational and design of a multicenter, randomized open-label clinical trial

Individuals with an intracranial occlusion who present with minor stroke are at an increased risk of early neurological deterioration and poor outcomes. Individual patient data meta-analysis in the subgroup of patients with minor deficits showed benefit of alteplase in improving outcomes; however, this benefit has not been seen with intravenous alteplase in published randomized trials. Design: TEMPO-2 (A Randomized Controlled Trial of Tenecteplase Versus Standard of Care for Minor Ischemic Stroke With Proven Occlusion) is a prospective, open label with blinded outcome assessment, randomized controlled trial, designed to test the superiority of intravenous tenecteplase (0.25 mg/kg) over nonthrombolytic standard of care, with an estimated sample size of 1274 patients. Adult patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) ⩽ 5 and visible arterial occlusion or perfusion deficit within 12 h of onset are randomized to receive either tenecteplase (0.25 mg/kg) or standard of care. The primary outcome is return to baseline neurological functioning, measured by the modified Rankin scale (mRS) at 90 days. Safety outcomes include death and symptomatic hemorrhage (intra or extra-cranial). Other secondary outcomes include mRS 0–1, mRS 0–2, ordinal shift analysis of the mRS, partial, and full recanalization on follow-up computed tomography angiogram. Conclusion: Results of this trial will aid in determining whether there is benefit of using tenecteplase (0.25 mg/kg) in treating patients presenting with minor stroke who are at high risk of developing poor outcomes due to presence of an intracranial occlusion.This study was supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Canadian Institute for Health Research, Alberta Innovates and British Heart Foundation.     Early Gait Biomechanics Linked to Daily Steps Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

    CONTEXT: Gait biomechanics and daily steps are important aspects of knee joint loading that change following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Understanding their relationship during the first 6 months post-ACLR could help develop comprehensive rehabilitation interventions that promote optimal joint loading following injury, thereby improving long-term knee joint health. OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective was to compare biomechanical gait waveforms throughout stance at early timepoints post-ACLR in individuals with different daily step behaviors at 6 months post-ACLR. The secondary aim was to examine how these gait waveforms compare to those of uninjured controls. DESIGN: Case-Control Study. SETTING: Laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Individuals with primary ACLR assigned to a low (LSG) (n=13) or high step group (HSG) (n=19) based on their average daily steps at 6 months post- ACLR, and uninjured matched controls (n=32). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Gait biomechanics were collected at 2, 4, and 6 months post-ACLR in ACLR individuals and at a single session for controls. Knee adduction moment (KAM), knee extension moment (KEM), and knee flexion angle (KFA) waveforms were calculated during gait stance and then compared via functional waveform analyses. Mean differences and corresponding 95% confident intervals between groups were reported. RESULTS: Primary results demonstrated lesser KFA (1-45%, 79-92% of stance) and greater KEM (65-93% of stance) at 2 months and greater KAM (14-20%, 68-92% of stance) at 4 months post-ACLR for the HSG compared to the LSG. KEM, KAM, and KFA waveforms differed across various proportions of stance at all timepoints between step groups and controls. CONCLUSION: Differences in gait biomechanics are present at 2 and 4 months post-ACLR between step groups, with the LSG demonstrating an overall more flexed knee and more profound stepwise underloading throughout stance than the HSG. The results indicate a relation between early gait biomechanics and later daily steps behaviors following ACLR
