Baryon octupole moments
We report on a calculation of higher electromagnetic multipole moments of
baryons in a non-covariant quark model approach. The employed method is based
on the underlying spin-flavor symmetry of the strong interaction and its
breaking.We present results on magnetic octupole moments of decuplet baryons

Spin of ground state baryons
We calculate the quark spin contribution to the total angular momentum of
flavor octet and flavor decuplet ground state baryons using a spin-flavor
symmetry based parametrization method of quantum chromodynamics. We find that
third order SU(6) symmetry breaking three-quark operators are necessary to
explain the experimental result Sigma_1=0.32(10). For spin 3/2 decuplet baryons
we predict that the quark spin contribution is Sigma_3=3.93(22), i.e.
considerably larger than their total angular momentum.Comment: 8 page

National Root CAs enable legally binding E-Business and E-Government
transactions. This is a report about the development, the evaluation and the
certification of the new certification services system for the German National
Root CA. We illustrate why a new certification services system was necessary,
and which requirements to the new system existed. Then we derive the tasks to
be done from the mentioned requirements. After that we introduce the initial
situation at the beginning of the project. We report about the very process and
talk about some unfamiliar situations, special approaches and remarkable
experiences. Finally we present the ready IT system and its impact to

Analysis of the total 12C(α,γ)16O cross section based on available angular distributions and other primary data
Because a knowledge of the 12C/16O ratio is crucial to the understanding of the later evolution of massive stars, new R- and K-matrix fits have been completed using the available angular distribution data from radiative α capture and elastic α scattering on 12C. Estimates of the total 12C(α,γ)16O rate at stellar energies are reported. In contrast with previous work, the analyses generally involve R- and K-matrix fits directly to the primary data, i.e., the energy- and angle-dependent differential yields, with all relevant partial waves fitted simultaneously (referred to here as surface fits). It is shown that, while the E1 part of the reaction is well constrained by a recent experiment on the β-delayed α-particle decay of 16N, only upper limits can be placed on the E2 ground state cross section factor which we take conservatively as SE2(300)<140 keV b. Simulations were then carried out to explore what kind of new data could lead to better restrictions on SE2(300). We find that improved elastic scattering data may be the best short-term candidate for such restrictions while significantly improving S(300) with new radiative capture data may require a longer-term effort. Theoretical models and estimates from α-transfer reactions for the E2 part of 12C(α,γ)16O are then discussed for comparison with the R- and K-matrix fits of the present work
Heteranthery in Clarkia: pollen performance of dimorphic anthers contradicts expectations.
Premise of the studyWild plant species that require the services of pollen-feeding insects for reliable pollination may evolve features that attract and reward their mutualistic partners. Heterantherous species have been proposed to exhibit a "division of labor" whereby "feeding anthers" (which produce pollen that may be consumed by an insect) are distinguished from "reproductive anthers" (which produce pollen more likely to contribute to reproduction). In some heterantherous species, including Clarkia unguiculata (Onagraceae), these two anther types differ with respect to stamen length, anther size, pollen production, and pollen color.MethodsThe primary goal of this study was to test one component of the "division of labor" hypothesis by comparing the performance of the pollen produced by each type of anther in C. unguiculata. To achieve this goal, under greenhouse conditions, we hand pollinated and assessed pollen performance (using epifluorescence microscopy) within ~228 flowers.Key resultsThe pollen produced by the two anther types differed significantly with respect to both stigma and style penetration. The inner series of anthers produce pollen with higher performance than the outer series of longer, dark red anthers.ConclusionsThese findings contradict previous descriptions of the genus, reporting that the inner diminutive series of anthers in Clarkia produce "abortive and nonfunctional" pollen. We outline the future research required to demonstrate the ecological function of heteranthery in this iconic wildflower group
Axial exchange currents and nucleon spin
We calculate the hypercharge and flavor singlet axial couplings related to
the spin of the nucleon in a constituent quark model. In addition to the
standard one-body axial currents, the model includes two-body axial exchange
currents. The latter are necessary to satisfy the Partial Conservation of Axial
Current (PCAC) condition. For both axial couplings we find significant
corrections to the standard quark model prediction. Exchange currents reduce
the valence quark contribution to the nucleon spin and afford an interpretation
of the missing nucleon spin as orbital angular momentum carried by nonvalence
quark degrees of freedom.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
Intrinsic quadrupole moment of the nucleon
We address the question of the intrinsic quadrupole moment Q_0 of the nucleon
in various models. All models give a positive intrinsic quadrupole moment for
the proton. This corresponds to a prolate deformation. We also calculate the
intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta(1232). All our models lead to a
negative intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta corresponding to an oblate
