Mathematical knowledge for teaching and mathematics didactic knowledge : A comparative study

This paper compares and contrasts two approaches that are widely used in the English- and German-speaking discourse on mathematics teacher knowledge: ‘mathematical knowledge for teaching’ and ‘mathematics didactic knowledge’. It is proposed that these constructs are based on distinct theoretical and conceptual positions and origins. Mathematical knowledge for teaching is viewed as a utilitarian-pragmatic approach rooted in English-speaking traditions as it focuses on its use in teaching and represents a practice-based conceptualization of knowledge domains required for mathematics teaching. Mathematics didactic knowledge, on the other hand, is considered normative-descriptive as it is formulated based on didactic principles and broader theoretical perspectives, providing a theory-driven conceptualization of knowledge domains rooted in traditions of German-speaking didactics of mathematics. The paper further highlights similarities and differences in these two constructs through an examination of two central knowledge domains: specialized content knowledge (part of mathematical knowledge for teaching) and subject matter didactic knowledge (part of mathematics didactic knowledge)

Voraussetzungen und Qualitätskriterien von Mixed-Methods-Studien in der mathematikdidaktischen Forschung

Zusammenfassung Die Verbreitung von Mixed-Methods-Studien in der Mathematikdidaktik wirft die Frage nach disziplinspezifischen Voraussetzungen und Qualitätskriterien auf. Derartige Studien sollten daher nicht nur pragmatisch oder durch die Auswahl von spezifischen Forschungsdesigns begründet werden, sondern auch den gegenstandsspezifischen Mehrwert einer Integration von Ergebnissen herausstellen, die durch unterschiedliche (mathematikdidaktische) Forschungsmethoden gewonnen wurden. Im Beitrag werden deshalb methodologische und wissenschaftsphilosophische Voraussetzungen zu Mixed-Methods-Studien ontologischen und epistemologischen Annahmen zu mathematikdidaktischen Forschungsgegenständen und Methoden gegenübergestellt. Eine theoretische Verankerung von Mixed-Methods-Studien im Critical Realism ermöglicht, die Kombination unterschiedlicher Forschungsparadigmen auch ontologisch zu begründen. Die aus den disziplinspezifischen Anknüpfungspunkten entwickelte Perspektive für Qualitätskriterien und ein methodologisches Framework kann zu einer reflektierten Praxis von Mixed-Methods in der Mathematikdidaktik beitrage

Planning and Conducting Mixed Methods Studies in Mathematics Educational Research

In this chapter, central ideas of Mixed Methods Research are presentedin which qualitative and quantitative research methods are combined or integrated.In addition to the explanation of common Mixed Methods terminology, the chapterprovides an overview of the most important aspects that must be reflected in theplanning and conduction of a mixed-methodological research project. On the basisof considerations on the nature of the research object and specific conditions ofmathematics education research, methodological aspects of the research question,research design and data analysis are described. The chapter concludes with con-siderations on the challenges of Mixed Methods, as well as recommendations on thestep-by-step approach to a Mixed Methods Research project
