    Quantitative Analysis of Electrotonic Structure and Membrane Properties of NMDA-Activated Lamprey Spinal Neurons

    Parameter optimization methods were used to quantitatively analyze frequency-domain-voltage-clamp data of NMDA-activated lamprey spinal neurons simultaneously over a wide range of membrane potentials. A neuronal cable model was used to explicitly take into account receptors located on the dendritic trees. The driving point membrane admittance was measured from the cell soma in response to a Fourier synthesized point voltage clamp stimulus. The data were fitted to an equivalent cable model consisting of a single lumped soma compartment coupled resistively to a series of equal dendritic compartments. The model contains voltage-dependent NMDA sensitive (INMDA), slow potassium (IK), and leakage (IL) currents. Both the passive cable properties and the voltage dependence of ion channel kinetics were estimated, including the electrotonic structure of the cell, the steady-state gating characteristics, and the time constants for particular voltage- and time-dependent ionic conductances. An alternate kinetic formulation was developed that consisted of steady-state values for the gating parameters and their time constants at half-activation values as well as slopes of these parameters at half-activation. This procedure allowed independent restrictions on the magnitude and slope of both the steady-state gating variable and its associated time constant. Quantitative estimates of the voltage-dependent membrane ion conductances and their kinetic parameters were used to solve the nonlinear equations describing dynamic responses. The model accurately predicts current clamp responses and is consistent with experimentally measured TTX-resistant NMDA-induced patterned activity. In summary, an analysis method is developed that provides a pragmatic approach to quantitatively describe a nonlinear neuronal system

    Cold-formed stainless steel CHS beam-columns – testing, simulation and design

    The present work was prompted by shortcomings identi ed in existing design provisions for stainless steel circular hollow section (CHS) beam-columns. First, addressing a lack of existing experimental data, a series of ferritic stainless steel CHS beam-column tests was undertaken at the cross-section and member levels. In total, 26 beam-column tests, including two section sizes (a non-slender class 3 and slender class 4 cross-section), two member slenderness values for each cross-section type and a wide range of loading eccentricities were carried out to investigate the interaction between local and global buckling. Following validation of nite element (FE) models, a numerical study was then undertaken to explore the buckling response of stainless steel CHS beam-columns, covering austenitic, duplex and ferritic grades with a wide range of local and global slendernesses and applied loading eccentricities. Over 2000 numerical results were generated and used to assess new design proposals for stainless steel beam-columns, featuring improved compression and bending end points and new interaction factors. The new proposals are more consistent and more accurate in their resistance predictions than the current EN 1993-1-4 (2015) design approach. The reliability of the new proposals has been veri ed by means of statistical analyses according to EN 1990 (2005)

    We present some new results about the distribution of a random walk whose independent steps follow a qq-Gaussian distribution with exponent 11q;qR\frac{1}{1-q}; q \in \mathbb{R}. In the case q>1q>1 we show that a stochastic representation of the point reached after nn steps of the walk can be expressed explicitly for all nn. In the case q<1,q<1, we show that the random walk can be interpreted as a projection of an isotropic random walk, i.e. a random walk with fixed length steps and uniformly distributed directions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Service Learning as Scholarship in Teacher Education

    This article describes how two teacher education service-learning programs illustrate alternative interpretations of scholarship. A tutoring-mentoring program in a teaching oriented masters institution and a motor skill development program in a land grant doctoral-research institution are described relative to how each illustrates forms of scholarship as interpreted by Boyer ( 1990). We discuss how these forms of scholarship the scholarship of discovery, integration, teaching, and application--relate to stated institutional mission and evaluation practices. Service-learning experiences for preservice teachers can have the multiple benefits of promoting an ethic of service and social responsibility, demonstrating excellence in teacher education, and exemplifying scholarly endeavors

    Using learning design as a framework for supporting the design and reuse of OER

    The paper will argue that adopting a learning design methodology may provide a vehicle for enabling better design and reuse of Open Educational Resources (OERs). It will describe a learning design methodology, which is being developed and implemented at the Open University in the UK. The aim is to develop a 'pick and mix' learning design toolbox of different resources and tools to help designers/teachers make informed decisions about creating new or adapting existing learning activities. The methodology is applicable for designers/teachers designing in a traditional context – such as creation of materials as part of a formal curriculum, but also has value for those wanting to create OERs or adapt and repurpose existing OERs. With the increasing range of OERs now available through initiatives as part of the Open Courseware movement, we believe that methodologies, such as the one we describe in this paper, which can help guide reuse and adaptation will become increasingly important and arguably are an important aspect of ensuring longer term sustainability and uptake of OERs. Our approach adopts an empirically based approach to understanding and representing the design process. This includes a range of evaluation studies (capturing of case studies, interviews with designers/teachers, in-depth course evaluation and focus groups/workshops), which are helping to develop our understanding of how designers/teachers go about creating new learning activities. Alongside this we are collating an extensive set of tools and resources to support the design process, as well as developing a new Learning Design tool that helps teachers articulate and represent their design ideas. The paper will describe how we have adapted a mind mapping and argumentation tool, Compendium, for this purpose and how it is being used to help designers and teachers create and share learning activities. It will consider how initial evaluation of the use of the tool for learning design has been positive; users report that the tool is easy to use and helps them organise and articulate their learning designs. Importantly the tool also enables them to share and discuss their thinking about the design process. However it is also clear that visualising the design process is only one aspect of design, which is complex and multi-faceted

    Search for antiproton decay at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator

    A search for antiproton decay has been made at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator. Limits are placed on thirteen antiproton decay modes. The results include the first explicit experimental limits on the muonic decay modes of the antiproton, and the first limits on the decay modes e- gamma gamma, and e- omega. The most stringent limit is for the decay mode pbar-> e- gamma. At 90% C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> e- gamma) > 7 x 10^5 yr. The most stringent limit for decay modes with a muon in the final state is for the decay pbar-> mu- gamma. At 90% C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> mu- gamma) > 5 x 10^4 yr.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures.     The Significance of Slope 1 Variation in Early Solar System Solids

    As originally demonstrated by Clayton and co-workers, primitive meteorites and their components commonly display mass-independent oxygen isotopic variation. As a tool to understand this behaviour, a number of reference lines have been defined, with slopes of approximately 1. The Carbonaceous Chondrite Anhydrous Mineral (CCAM) line, derived predominantly from analyses of components in the Allende (CV3) meteorite, is the most widely used reference and has a slope of 0.94 plus or minus 0.01 (2 sigma). However, the fundamental significance of the CCAM line has been questioned. Based on the results of a UV laser ablation study of an Allende CAI (calcium-aluminumrich inclusion), it was suggested that a line of exactly slope 1 (Y&R line - Young and Russell line) was of more fundamental significance. SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analysis of chondrules from primitive CRs and related chondrites define a third, distinct slope 1 line, known as the Primitive Chondrule Minerals (PCM) line. Here we discuss the results of bulk oxygen isotope analysis of CO, CV and CR chondrites and various separated components, with the aim of better understanding the origin of slope 1 behaviour in early Solar System materials
