    Regional Extinction Risk and Conservation Priorities for Persian Gulf Marine Bony Fishes

    Around the world, protected areas are the primary conservation measure used to combat biodiversity loss; however, these are often established without comprehensive species-specific information, leading to placement in areas that often do not address the processes that threaten biodiversity. To address this, International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List assessments are being utilized to determine species-specific threats and population status at the global and sub-global levels. This study examines the regional extinction risk for all known marine bony fishes of the Persian Gulf. About 8.3% of the 471 marine bony fishes assessed are at elevated risk of regional extinction. The distribution of threatened species is primarily linked to coastal areas with high human activity and environmental extremes. Evaluation of the Persian Gulf marine protected area network identified limited coverage, with most marine bony fishes having 5% or less of their ranges covered. Given this limited coverage, the offshore islands of Saudi Arabia and near-shore areas around Abu Dhabi and the Kuwait/Iraq border, which contain high concentrations of endemic and threatened species as well as critically important habitats, are recommended for future conservation prioritization. With efficient and effective management and protection, there is potential for the status of the threatened species to improve within this globally important region

The paper illustrates how the issue of anti-communism was used as a political tool on the national level, and this tactic would trickle down to the state and local level, specifically into the public school systems. Focusing on Orleans Parish public schools, the narrative of red-baiting and anti-communist rhetoric is brought to life through the trials of Fortier High School. This study will chronicle how teachers became the tools of nation-building through state-sponsored Americanism programs. Students of Fortier and other high schools in the region were taught that to be American means specifically not to be Communist. This then is a contribution to the continuity of the politics of anti-communism in the United States from the New Deal to the Cold War eras

    Theory and Applications of Aperiodic (Random) Phased Arrays

    A need for network centric topologies using mobile wireless communications makes it important to investigate new distributed beamforming techniques. Platforms such as micro air vehicles (MAVs), unattended ground sensors (UGSs), and unpiloted aerial vehicles (UAVs) can all benefit from advances in this area utilizing advantages in stealth, enhanced survivability and maximum maneuverability. Moreover, in this dissertation, electromagnetic radiation is investigated such that the signal power of each element is coherently added in the far-field region of a specified target direction with net destructive interference occurring in all other regions to suppress sidelobe behavior. This provides superior range and resolution characteristics for a variety of applications including; early warning radar, ballistic missile defense and search and rescue efforts. A wide variety of topologies can be used to confine geometrically these mobile random arrays for analysis. The distribution function for these topologies must be able to generalize the randomness within the geometry. By this means it is feasible to assume the random element distribution of a very large volumetric space will yield either a normal or Gaussian distribution. Therefore the underlying assumption stands that the statistically averaged beam pattern develops from an arrangement of uniformly or Gaussian distrusted elements; both confined to a variety of geometry of radius A and is further generalized using a simple theory based upon the Fourier Transform. Hence, this theory will be derived and serve as the foundation for advanced performance characteristics of these arrays such as its ability for sidelobe tapering, adaptive nulling and multi beam control. In addition it will be shown that for the most ideal of conditions a steerable beam pattern free of sidelobe behavior (better known as a Gaussian distribution) is quite possible. As well these random array structures will be shown to provide superior bandwidth capability over tradiational array structures since they are frequency independent. Last of all a summary of the random array analysis and its results concludes this dissertation

    Periods, Organized (PeriodO): A gazetteer of period assertions for linking and visualizing periodized data

    The PeriodO project seeks to create an online gazetteer of authoritative assertions about the chronological and geographic extent of historical and archaeological periods. Starting with a trial dataset related to Classical antiquity, this gazetteer will combine period thesauri used by museums and cultural heritage bodies with published assertions about the dates and locations of periods in authoritative print sources. These assertions will be modeled in a Linked Data format (JSON-LD, a serialization of RDF). They will be given Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) and served from a public GitHub repository, where they can act as a shared reference point to describe data in datasets with periodized information. We will also create a search and visualization tool to view the temporal and geographic extent of an assertion and compare it with others. Authoritative users will be able to add their own period assertions

    If a psychologist loses treatment records because of a computer failure, is it an ethical violation? The widespread growth of technology has outpaced the development of ethical standards for questions such as this, resulting in areas of uncertainty for psychologists. Four hundred twenty psychologists in independent practice rated the ethicality and their frequency of using 40 technologies. Technologies pertaining to the support functions of a psychologist\u27s office are commonly used, but those technologies directly affecting clinical services are rarely used. More than half of the 40 items received equivocal ratings on ethicality, suggesting psychologists need guidelines and training for the use of technology in professional practice

Platforms such as micro air vehicles (MAVs), unattended ground sensors (UGSs), and unpiloted aerial vehicles (UAVs) can all benefit from advances in this area by enabling advantages in stealth, enhanced survivability, and maximum maneuverability. Collaborative beamforming is an example of a new technique to utilize these systems which uses a randomly distributed antenna array with a fitting phase coefficient for the elements. In this example, the radiated signal power of each element is coherently added in the far-field region of a specified target direction with net destructive interference occurring in all other regions to suppress sidelobe behavior. A wide variety of topologies can be used to confine geometrically these mobile random arrays for analysis. The distribution function for these topologies must be able to generalize the randomness within the geometry. Gaussian and Uniform distributions are investigated in this analysis, since they provide a way to calculate the statistically averaged beampattern for linear, planar (square and circular), and volumetric (cubical, cylindrical, and spherical) geometries. They are also of practical interest since the impact of array topology on the beampattern can typically be described in closed form. A rigorous analysis is presented first for disc-shaped topologies to motivate the discussion on random array properties and provide several new insights into their behavior. The analyses of volumetric geometries which are of interest to this work are drawn from this planar topology to provide a tractable and coherent discussion on the properties of more complex geometries. This analysis considers Normal and Gaussian distributed array element populations to derive the average beampattern, sidelobe behavior, beamwidth, and directivity. The beampattern is also examined in a similar manor for circular and spherical arrays with a truncated Gaussian distribution.
