Considering the mass and energy sources carried by the accumulated ice layer, an unsteady heat and mass transfer model of the runback water film on the deicing surface is established to simulate aircraft electro-thermal deicing process. With the extension of the freezing coefficient to the transient calculation, the coupled heat transfer of the runback water and the solid skin is solved at each time step by a temperature-based method. Unsteady numerical simulation is carried out for the electro-thermal deicing system of a NACA 0012 airfoil. The temperature variations with time are in acceptable agreement with the literature data, and the unsteady temperature-based deicing model is verified. The calculation results of temperature, runback water flux and ice thickness on the deicing surface are analyzed at different time points, and it is shown that the unsteady electro-thermal deicing model can capture the main features of the icing, ice melting and re-freezing processes in the transient deicing simulations

© 2019 The Authors. Published by WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim The current positive computed tomography (CT) contrast agents (PCTCAs) including clinical iodides, present high CT density value (CT-DV). However, they are incapable for the accurate diagnosis of some diseases with high CT-DV, such as osteosarcoma. Because bones and PCTCAs around osteosarcoma generate similar X-ray attenuations. Here, an innovative strategy of negative CT contrast agents (NCTCAs) to reduce the CT-DV of osteosarcoma is proposed, contributing to accurate detection of osteosarcoma. Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles, loading ammonia borane molecules and further modified by polyethylene glycol, are synthesized as NCTCAs for the diagnosis of osteosarcoma. The nanocomposites can produce H2 in situ at osteosarcoma areas by responding to the acidic microenvironment of osteosarcoma, resulting in nearly 20 times reduction of CT density in osteosarcoma. This helps form large CT density contrast between bones and osteosarcoma, and successfully achieves accurate diagnosis of osteosarcoma. Meanwhile, The NCTCAs strategy greatly expands the scope of CT application, and provides profound implications for the precise clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of diseases

Cryogenic loop heat pipe (CLHP) is one of the key components in the future space infrared exploration system, which enables effective and efficient cryogenic heat transport over a long distance with a flexible thermal link. To realize reliable and long life operation, a CLHP-based thermal control system with redundancy design was proposed in this work, where two nitrogen-charged CLHPs were employed to provide cryocooling at 80–100 K. This study focused on the supercritical startup of the CLHPs with redundancy design, and an extensive experimental study under four possible working modes was conducted. Experimental results showed that with 2.5 W applied to the secondary evaporator, each CLHP could realize the supercritical startup successfully in the normal working mode; however, the required time differed a lot because the difference in the transport line diameter significantly affected the cryocooling capacity to the primary evaporator. In the backup conversion mode, instant switch of the two primary evaporators may cause an operation failure, and an auxiliary operation of the secondary evaporator in advance was necessary to make the primary liquid line filled with liquid. In the malfunction conversion mode, the simulated infrared detector had to be first shut down, but the time needed for the backup CLHP to realize the supercritical startup became obviously shorter than that in the normal working mode, because the primary evaporator of the backup CLHP was always in a cryogenic state. In the dual operation mode, the two CLHPs could realize the supercritical startup simultaneously, but a temperature oscillation phenomenon was observed, which can be eliminated by increasing the heat load applied to the secondary evaporator

Continuous-action reinforcement learning for memory allocation in virtualized servers

In a virtualized computing server (node) with multiple Virtual Machines (VMs), it is necessary to dynamically allocate memory among the VMs. In many cases, this is done only considering the memory demand of each VM without having a node-wide view. There are many solutions for the dynamic memory allocation problem, some of which use machine learning in some form. This paper introduces CAVMem (Continuous-Action Algorithm for Virtualized Memory Management), a proof-of-concept mechanism for a decentralized dynamic memory allocation solution in virtualized nodes that applies a continuous-action reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm called Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). CAVMem with DDPG is compared with other RL algorithms such as Q-Learning (QL) and Deep Q-Learning (DQL) in an environment that models a virtualized node. In order to obtain linear scaling and be able to dynamically add and remove VMs, CAVMem has one agent per VM connected via a lightweight coordination mechanism. The agents learn how much memory to bid for or return, in a given state, so that each VM obtains a fair level of performance subject to the available memory resources. Our results show that CAVMem with DDPG performs better than QL and a static allocation case, but it is competitive with DQL. However, CAVMem incurs significant less training overheads than DQL, making the continuous-action approach a more cost-effective solution. This research is part of a project that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 754337 (EuroEXA) and the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme under grant agreement number 610456 (Euroserver). Polo-like kinase (Plk) 1 is overexpressed in many human malignancies including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, indicating its potential as a therapeutic target. Recently, using a simple cellular morphologybased strategy, we have identified several novel effective siRNAs against Plk1 including Plk1 siRNA- 607. In this study, we further investigated the effects of Plk1 siRNA-607 in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line, HNE-1. Real time RT-PCR and Western blot indicated that Plk1 siRNA-607 transfection resulted in a significant inhibition in Plk1 expression in the HNE-1 cells. Furthermore, cell cycle, cell growth and apoptosis analysis clearly indicated that Plk1 siRNA-607 caused a dramatic mitotic cell cycle arrest followed by massive apoptotic cell death, and eventually resulted in a significant decrease in growth and viability of the nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. Given that Plk1 has been widely accepted as a novel efficient target for cancer therapy, these results suggested that Plk1 siRNA-607 could be further developed for the treatment of human nasopharyngeal carcinoma.Key words: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Plk1, RNA silencing, cell cycle, apoptosis

Exciton entanglement in two coupled semiconductor microcrystallites

Entanglement of the excitonic states in the system of two coupled semiconductor microcrystallites, whose sizes are much larger than the Bohr radius of exciton in bulk semiconductor but smaller than the relevant optical wavelength, is quantified in terms of the entropy of entanglement. It is observed that the nonlinear interaction between excitons increases the maximum values of the entropy of the entanglement more than that of the linear coupling model. Therefore, a system of two coupled microcrystallites can be used as a good source of entanglement with fixed exciton number. The relationship between the entropy of the entanglement and the population imbalance of two microcrystallites is numerically shown and the uppermost envelope function for them is estimated by applying the Jaynes principle.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

© Copyright 2021 The Author(s). The damping performance evaluation for electro-mechanical oscillations in power systems is crucial for the stable operation of modern power systems. In this paper, the connection between two commonly-used damping performance evaluation methods, i.e., the damping torque analysis (DTA) and energy flow analysis (EFA), are systematically examined and revealed for the better understanding of the oscillatory damping mechanism. First, a concept of the aggregated damping torque coefficient is proposed and derived based on DTA of multi-machine power systems, which can characterize the integration effect of the damping contribution from the whole power system. Then, the pre-processing of measurements at the terminal of a local generator is conducted for EFA, and a concept of the frequency-decomposed energy attenuation coefficient is defined to screen the damping contribution with respect to the interested frequency. On this basis, the frequency spectrum analysis of the energy attenuation coefficient is employed to rigorously prove that the results of DTA and EFA are essentially equivalent, which is valid for arbitrary types of synchronous generator models in multi-machine power systems. Additionally, the consistency between the aggregated damping torque coefficient and frequency-decomposed energy attenuation coefficient is further verified by the numerical calculation in case studies. The relationship between the proposed coefficients and the eigenvalue (or damping ratio) is finally revealed, which consolidates the application of the proposed concepts in the damping performance evaluation.10.13039/501100001809-National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant Number: 51807171); 10.13039/501100007162-Guangdong Science and Technology Department (Grant Number: 2019A1515011226)

Accurate and Real-Time Temperature Monitoring during MR Imaging Guided PTT.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is an efficient approach for cancer treatment. However, accurately monitoring the spatial distribution of photothermal transducing agents (PTAs) and mapping the real-time temperature change in tumor and peritumoral normal tissue remain a huge challenge. Here, we propose an innovative strategy to integrate T1-MRI for precisely tracking PTAs with magnetic resonance temperature imaging (MRTI) for real-time monitoring temperature change in vivo during PTT. NaBiF4: Gd@PDA@PEG nanomaterials were synthesized with favorable T1-weighted performance to target tumor and localize PTAs. The extremely weak susceptibility (1.04 Ă— 10-6 emu g-1 Oe1-) of NaBiF4: Gd@PDA@PEG interferes with the local phase marginally, which maintains the capability of MRTI to dynamically record real-time temperature change in tumor and peritumoral normal tissue. The time resolution is 19 s per frame, and the detection precision of temperature change is approximately 0.1 K. The approach achieving PTT guided by multimode MRI holds significant potential for the clinical application

Temperature dependence of structural and electronic properties of the spin-liquid candidate kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3

We investigate the effect that the temperature dependence of the crystal structure of a two dimensional organic charge-transfer salt has on the low-energy Hamiltonian representation of the electronic structure. For that, we determine the crystal structure of kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3 for a series of temperatures between T=5 K and 300 K by single crystal X-ray diffraction and analyze the evolution of the electronic structure with temperature by using density functional theory and tight binding methods. We find a considerable temperature dependence of the corresponding triangular lattice Hubbard Hamiltonian parameters. We conclude that even in the absence of change of symmetry, the temperature dependence of quantities like frustration and interaction strength can be significant and should be taken into account.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

The effect of e-cigarettes on smoking cessation and cigarette smoking initiation: An evidence-based rapid review and meta-analysis.

    Get PDF
The contribution made by e-cigarettes to smoking cessation continues to be controversial. Reports suggest that teenagers are becoming increasingly addicted to e-cigarettes and that e-cigarette use in adolescents is associated with subsequent cigarette smoking. Systematic searches of eleven databases were conducted (January 2015 to June 2020). Systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies comparing e-cigarettes with placebo e-cigarettes, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or no e-cigarette use were included. The two primary outcomes were smoking cessation among smokers and smoking initiation among non-smoking teenagers. The secondary outcome was adverse events. Data were synthesized using risk ratio (RR) or adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Six systematic reviews, 5 RCTs and 24 cohort studies were identified. For smoking cessation, findings from 4 systematic reviews indicated that e-cigarettes contributed to cessation while one found the opposite. Meta-analysis of 5 RCTs suggested that e-cigarettes were superior to NRT or placebo for smoking cessation (RR=1.55; 95% CI: 1.00-2.40; I =57.6%; low certainty; 5 trials, n=4025). Evidence from 9 cohort studies showed that e-cigarette use was not associated with cessation (AOR=1.16; 95% CI: 0.88-1.54; I =69.0%; n=22220). Subgroup analysis suggested that intensive e-cigarette use may be associated with cessation. In terms of smoking initiation, adolescents who ever used e-cigarettes had a greater risk for smoking initiation than non-users (AOR=2.91; 95% CI: 2.61-3.23; I =61.0%; 15 trials, n=68943), the findings were consistent with one included systematic review. No serious adverse events were reported in the included studies. Low certainty evidence suggests that e-cigarettes appear to be potentially effective for smoking cessation. The use of e-cigarettes in adolescents may be associated with smoking initiation. No serious adverse events were reported. [Abstract copyright: © 2021 Zhang Y.Y. et al.
