Information behaviour in pre-literate societies.
This chapter arose from an exchange of ideas between a former life scientist, a former archaeologist, and a member of the Kope tribe, a remote tribe in Papua New Guinea. All three now work in fields related to information sciences.
It discusses how notions of information have been dominated by text-based information sources, and considers how one group of people (the Kope) managed information in the absence of any awareness of text.
The study explores how the Kopi relate to information, how they use it, and where they get it from. It summarises the findings as six information roles. These are related to contemporary situations

Management practices and SME performance
We examine the association between management practices and SME performance in Britain over the period 2011 -201 5, using a unique dataset which links survey data on management practices with firm performance data from the UK’s official business register. We find that SMEs are less likely to use formal management practices than larger firms . However, such practices appear to have demonstrable benefits for those SMEs who use them, being positively associated with firm survival, growth and productivity. Our results add further weight to policy initiatives which seek to encourage SMEs to improve their management skills and capabilities

Human Resource Management Diffusion and Productivity Imbalances
In this study, we explore spatial variance in management practices and assess its potential contribution to regional imbalances in productivity. The research builds on a growing body of evidence which indicates that differences in management practices can account for a substantial share of cross-country differences in total factor productivity, and which identifies an important role for management practices in explaining differences in productivity between firms in the UK. We contribute to this literature by studying regional variation in HRM and related management practices using workplace-level (i.e. plant-level) data in Britain, taken from the Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS). We use these data to map spatial variance in HRM intensity in Britain. We then seek to account for that variance and, in doing so, establish whether regional variance in HRM can help to account for regional variance in productivity. This analysis is complemented by a comparative investigation of equivalent data for France, where levels of productivity and HRM are both higher and less dispersed
Analytical and experimental investigation of aircraft metal structures reinforced with filamentary composites. Phase 3: Major component development
Analytical and experimental investigations, performed to establish the feasibility of reinforcing metal aircraft structures with advanced filamentary composites, are reported. Aluminum-boron-epoxy and titanium-boron-epoxy were used in the design and manufacture of three major structural components. The components were representative of subsonic aircraft fuselage and window belt panels and supersonic aircraft compression panels. Both unidirectional and multidirectional reinforcement concepts were employed. Blade penetration, axial compression, and inplane shear tests were conducted. Composite reinforced structural components designed to realistic airframe structural criteria demonstrated the potential for significant weight savings while maintaining strength, stability, and damage containment properties of all metal components designed to meet the same criteria
Meteorite cloudy zone formation as a quantitative indicator of paleomagnetic field intensities and cooling rates on planetesimals
Metallic microstructures in slowly-cooled iron-rich meteorites reflect the
thermal and magnetic histories of their parent planetesimals. Of particular
interest is the cloudy zone, a nanoscale intergrowth of Ni-rich islands within
a Ni-poor matrix that forms below 350{\deg}C by spinodal decomposition. The
sizes of the islands have long been recognized as reflecting the
low-temperature cooling rates of meteorite parent bodies. However, a model
capable of providing quantitative cooling rate estimates from island sizes has
been lacking. Moreover, these islands are also capable of preserving a record
of the ambient magnetic field as they grew, but some of the key physical
parameters required for recovering reliable paleointensity estimates from
magnetic measurements of these islands have been poorly constrained. To address
both of these issues, we present a numerical model of the structural and
compositional evolution of the cloudy zone as a function of cooling rate and
local composition. Our model produces island sizes that are consistent with
present-day measured sizes. This model enables a substantial improvement in the
calibration of paleointensity estimates and associated uncertainties. In
particular, we can now accurately quantify the statistical uncertainty
associated with the finite number of islands and the uncertainty on their size
at the time of the record. We use this new understanding to revisit
paleointensities from previous pioneering paleomagnetic studies of cloudy
zones. We show that these could have been overestimated but nevertheless still
require substantial magnetic fields to have been present on their parent
bodies. Our model also allows us to estimate absolute cooling rates for
meteorites that cooled slower than 10000{\deg}C My-1. We demonstrate how these
cooling rate estimates can uniquely constrain the low-temperature thermal
history of meteorite parent bodies.Comment: Manuscript resubmitted after revision
Improved navigation by combining VOR/DME information with air or inertial data
The improvement was determined in navigational accuracy obtainable by combining VOR/DME information (from one or two stations) with air data (airspeed and heading) or with data from an inertial navigation system (INS) by means of a maximum-likelihood filter. It was found that the addition of air data to the information from one VOR/DME station reduces the RMS position error by a factor of about 2, whereas the addition of inertial data from a low-quality INS reduces the RMS position error by a factor of about 3. The use of information from two VOR/DME stations with air or inertial data yields large factors of improvement in RMS position accuracy over the use of a single VOR/DME station, roughly 15 to 20 for the air-data case and 25 to 35 for the inertial-data case. As far as position accuracy is concerned, at most one VOR station need be used. When continuously updating an INS with VOR/DME information, the use of a high-quality INS (0.01 deg/hr gyro drift) instead of a low-quality INS (1.0 deg/hr gyro drift) does not substantially improve position accuracy
