    Pressure-driven flow of oligomeric fluid in nano-channel with complex structure. A dissipative particle dynamics study

    We develop a simulational methodology allowing for simulation of the pressure-driven flow in the pore with flat and polymer-modified walls. Our approach is based on dissipative particle dynamics and we combine earlier ideas of fluid-like walls and reverse flow. As a test case we consider the oligomer flow through the pore with flat walls and demonstrate good thermostatting qualities of the proposed method. We found the inhomogeneities in both oligomer shape and alignment across the pore leading to a non-parabolic velocity profiles. The method is subsequently applied to a nano-channel decorated with a polymer brush stripes arranged perpendicularly to the flow direction. At certain threshold value of a flow force we find a pillar-to-lamellar morphological transition, which leads to the brush enveloping the pore wall by a relatively smooth layer. At higher flow rates, the flow of oligomer has similar properties as in the case of flat walls, but for the narrower effective pore size. We observe stretching and aligning of the polymer molecules along the flow near the pore walls.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure

    A simple ansatz for the study of velocity autocorrelation functions in fluids at different timescales

    A simple ansatz for the study of velocity autocorrelation functions in fluids at different timescales is proposed. The ansatz is based on an effective summation of the infinite continued fraction at a reasonable assumption about convergence of relaxation times of the higher order memory functions, which have a purely kinetic origin. The VAFs obtained within our approach are compared with the results of the Markovian approximation for memory kernels. It is shown that although in the "overdamped" regime both approaches agree to a large extent at the initial and intermediate times of the system evolution, our formalism yields power law relaxation of the VAFs which is not observed at the description with a finite number of the collective modes. Explicit expressions for the transition times from kinetic to hydrodynamic regimes are obtained from the analysis of the singularities of spectral functions in the complex frequency plane.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Solvation force for long ranged wall-fluid potentials

    The solvation force of a simple fluid confined between identical planar walls is studied in two model systems with short ranged fluid-fluid interactions and long ranged wall-fluid potentials decaying as Azp,z-Az^{-p}, z\to \infty, for various values of pp. Results for the Ising spins system are obtained in two dimensions at vanishing bulk magnetic field h=0h=0 by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method; results for the truncated Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid are obtained within the nonlocal density functional theory. At low temperatures the solvation force fsolvf_{solv} for the Ising film is repulsive and decays for large wall separations LL in the same fashion as the boundary field fsolvLpf_{solv}\sim L^{-p}, whereas for temperatures larger than the bulk critical temperature fsolvf_{solv} is attractive and the asymptotic decay is fsolvL(p+1)f_{solv}\sim L^{-(p+1)}. For the LJ fluid system fsolvf_{solv} is always repulsive away from the critical region and decays for large LL with the the same power law as the wall-fluid potential. We discuss the influence of the critical Casimir effect and of capillary condensation on the behaviour of the solvation force.Comment: 48 pages, 12 figure

    Effect of Increased Activity on Metabolic Markers in Captive Black Rhinos: A Pilot Study

    Ex situ (captive) black rhinoceros populations exhibit higher rates of disease than free-ranging counterparts. Preliminary data from an ongoing study supports the association between excessive adipose tissue, iron overload, insulin resistance and increased inflammatory markers in captive animals. This study hypothesizes that an increase in activity level by 30 minutes daily at a moderate activity level for 8 weeks will result in improvement in insulin sensitivity (measured by a decrease in the serum insulin to glucose ratio) and decreased inflammation (measured by TNF-alpha and serum amyloid A). Serum markers of body condition (leptin), inflammation (TNF-alpha, serum amyloid A), insulin sensitivity (insulin, glucose), phosphate and iron stores (ferritin) will further be measured. An adult male and female at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo are the subjects for this pilot study. ELISA assays have been validated for measuring serum insulin, ferritin, TNF-α, and serum amyloid A in black rhino. These assays were used to assess changes in markers of metabolic status from weekly serum samples collected during 2 weeks of baseline and 10 weeks of increased activity. Methods to increase activity include delaying feeding times by 30 minutes when the subject is already in motion, a call and reward system, playing fetch, and jogging in the yard. The GT1 Actigraph, an accelerometer commonly used in field research, has been used to establish baseline activity levels and measured activity levels during the ten week interval of increased exercise. Our studies demonstrated a significant (P<0.001) increase in activity level above baseline in both the male and female black rhino.     Depletion potentials near geometrically structured substrates

    Using the recently developed so-called White Bear version of Rosenfeld's Fundamental Measure Theory we calculate the depletion potentials between a hard-sphere colloidal particle in a solvent of small hard spheres and simple models of geometrically structured substrates: a right-angled wedge or edge. In the wedge geometry, there is a strong attraction beyond the corresponding one near a planar wall that significantly influences the structure of colloidal suspensions in wedges. In accordance with an experimental study, for the edge geometry we find a free energy barrier of the order of several kBTk_B T which repels a big colloidal particle from the edge.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    School Instructional Program Coherence: Benefits and Challenges

    This report is one of a series of special topic reports developed by the Chicago Annenberg Research Project. It discusses an important reason why schools involved in multiple improvement initiatives do not always improve their students' achievements. It introduces the concept of instructional program coherence and presents new evidence that students in Chicago elementary schools with stronger program coherence show higher gains in student achievement. The report suggests ways in which school leaders, school improvement partners, and policy makers can act to bring about the instructional coherence that will reward their school improvement efforts

    School violence, school differences and school discourses

    This article highlights one strand of a study which investigated the concept of the violenceresilient school. In six inner-city secondary schools, data on violent incidents in school and violent crime in the neighbourhood were gathered, and compared with school practices to minimise violence, accessed through interviews. Some degree of association between the patterns of behaviour and school practices was found: schools with a wider range of wellconnected practices seemed to have less difficult behaviour. Interviews also showed that the different schools had different organisational discourses for construing school violence, its possible causes and the possible solutions. Differences in practices are best understood in connection with differences in these discourses. Some of the features of school discourses are outlined, including their range, their core metaphor and their silences. We suggest that organisational discourse is an important concept in explaining school effects and school differences, and that improvement attempts could have clearer regard to this concept

    Features of Cryptic Promoters and Their Varied Reliance on Bromodomain-Containing Factors

    The Set2-Rpd3S pathway is important for the control of transcription memory. Mutation of components of this pathway results in cryptic transcription initiation within the coding region of approximately 30% of yeast genes. Specifically, deletion of the Set2 histone methyltransferase or Rco1, a component of the Rpd3S histone deacetylase complex leads to hyperacetylation of certain open reading frames (ORFs). We used this mutant as a system to study the role of histone modifications and co-activator recruitment in preinitiation complex (PIC) formation. Specifically, we looked at the dependence of promoters on the bromodomain-containing RSC complex and the Bdf1 protein. We found that the dependence of cryptic promoters for these proteins varied. Overall, our data indicate that cryptic promoters are independently regulated, and their activation is dependent on factors that govern gene activation at canonical promoters
