    Freezing of Nonlinear Bloch Oscillations in the Generalized Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

    The dynamics in a nonlinear Schrodinger chain in an homogeneous electric field is studied. We show that discrete translational invariant integrability-breaking terms can freeze the Bloch nonlinear oscillations and introduce new faster frequencies in their dynamics. These phenomena are studied by direct numerical integration and through an adiabatic approximation. The adiabatic approximation allows a description in terms of an effective potential that greatly clarifies the phenomenon.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, 6 figures. Improved version to appear in Phys. Rev.

    A discrete Schrodinger spectral problem and associated evolution equations

    A recently proposed discrete version of the Schrodinger spectral problem is considered. The whole hierarchy of differential-difference nonlinear evolution equations associated to this spectral problem is derived. It is shown that a discrete version of the KdV, sine-Gordon and Liouville equations are included and that the so called `inverse' class in the hierarchy is local.     Design and experimental assessment of a novel damper with high endurance to seismic loads

    The study presents the design and the experimental characterization of a new energy dissipation device aimed at providing improved resistance to repeated seismic loads. Differently from conventional steel hysteretic dampers, which dissipate energy by yielding of a mild steel core and are noted to suffer low-cycle fatigue, the new damper provides energy dissipation by the friction that is activated between a moving shaft and a lead core prestressed within a tube. The prestress level is controlled during the assembling process, allowing to adjust the axial strength of the damper. Thanks to the ability of lead to restore its properties by static recrystallization taking place immediately after deformation, repeated cycles of loading do not produce damages that may accrue and eventually lead to failure of the device. Moreover, prestressing of the lead core allows to achieve high specific strength (i.e., high force to volume ratio), thereby providing low dimensions which help to reduce the architectural invasiveness. Prototypes of the damper were subjected to the test procedure established in the European standard EN 15129 for Displacement Dependent Devices, fulfilling the relevant requirements. The damper provides a robust and stable response over repeated cycles, characterized by essentially rectangular hysteresis loops with an equivalent viscous damping ratio ξeff of about 55%. Moreover, it shows low sensitivity of mechanical properties on the loading rate and the ability to withstand multiple cycles of motion at the design earthquake displacement without deterioration of performance, demonstrating maintenance-free operation in presence of repeated ground shakes. Its ability to survive several strong motions without being damaged, and its high damping capability coupled to a compact design and low manufacturing cost, are the distinctive features that make it suitable for social housing

    Geomorphological features of the Rio della Rocca Valley (northern Apennines, Italy)

    This paper shows the contents of the geomorphological map of the Rio della Rocca valley, a small catchment located in the lower Apennines of the Province of Reggio Emilia (northern Italy). The geomorphological map has been produced at a scale 1:7500 as a base document within multidisciplinary investigations aiming at the rehabilitation of the area, which is characterised by peculiar geological and geomorphological features and a high scenic value, despite clear evidence of human impact. Since the mid-1950s the valley has, in fact, been affected by quarrying activities which in some places have deeply changed its environmental and, in particular, geomorphological features. As a part of the research, geomorphological survey and mapping were carried out in order to detect the main slope instability and erosional processes and landforms and, at the same time, to recognise sites of geological and geomorphological interest. As a result, proposals of territorial upgrading have been developed which take into account geotourism and recreational issues

    We consider the classical self-dual Yang-Mills equation in 3+1-dimensional Minkowski space. We have found an exact solution, which describes scattering of nn plane waves. In order to write the solution in a compact form, it is convenient to introduce a scattering operator T^\hat{T}.     Warburg effect and translocation-induced genomic instability: two yeast models for cancer cells

    Yeast has been established as an efficient model system to study biological principles underpinning human health. In this review we focus on yeast models covering two aspects of cancer formation and progression (i) the activity of pyruvate kinase (PK), which recapitulates metabolic features of cancer cells, including the Warburg effect, and (ii) chromosome bridge-induced translocation (BIT) mimiking genome instability in cancer. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an excellent model to study cancer cell metabolism, as exponentially growing yeast cells exhibit many metabolic similarities with rapidly proliferating cancer cells. The metabolic reconfiguration includes an increase in glucose uptake and fermentation, at the expense of respiration and oxidative phosphorylation (the Warburg effect), and involves a broad reconfiguration of nucleotide and amino acid metabolism. Both in yeast and humans, the regulation of this process seems to have a central player, PK, which is up-regulated in cancer, and to occur mostly on a post-transcriptional and post-translational basis. Furthermore, BIT allows to generate selectable translocation-derived recombinants ("translocants"), between any two desired chromosomal locations, in wild-type yeast strains transformed with a linear DNA cassette carrying a selectable marker flanked by two DNA sequences homologous to different chromosomes. Using the BIT system, targeted non-reciprocal translocations in mitosis are easily inducible. An extensive collection of different yeast translocants exhibiting genome instability and aberrant phenotypes similar to cancer cells has been produced and subjected to analysis. In this review, we hence provide an overview upon two yeast cancer models, and extrapolate general principles for mimicking human disease mechanisms in yeast

    Recognition and Assessment of Geomorphosites in Malta at the Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park

    The Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park, located on the northwestern coast of the Island of Malta, is a protected area with natural, cultural and tourist interests. The Park, which was registered in 2008, is characterised by a landscape dominated by limestone and clay. Geomorphological features are highly controlled by the presence of faults and rock masses characterised by different physical and mechanical properties. Coastal cliffs, bays and sandy beaches are the most outstanding geomorphological features of the Park, creating a breathtaking landscape which is an attraction for a number of visitors. In the framework of an international research project, a study for the identification, selection and enhancement of the rich geomorphological heritage of the area has been carried out. In particular, a recognition and a quantitative assessment of geomorphosites on the basis of two different methodologies has been developed, and the results have been compared to establish the reliability of the methodologies. The results represent the first step and the necessary basic knowledge for possible enhancement of geomorphosites in Malta and the promotion of tourism activities at the Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park through the auspices of environmental agencies

    Screening of at-risk blood donors for Chagas disease in non-endemic countries: Lessons from a 2-year experience in Tuscany, Italy

    Background: Chagas disease (CD) is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and is transmitted by blood-sucking triatomine insects in endemic areas of Latin America. Transmission can also occur via blood transfusion and is a major cause of CD in non-endemic areas. Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of anti-T. cruzi antibodies in blood donors at risk of infection in Tuscany, Italy, following the introduction of blood safety Italian legislation. Material and methods: Donors (N = 1985) were tested in 2016 to 2018 for anti-T. cruzi IgG using an immunochromatographic test (ICT). Chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) was performed on ICT-positive donors to exclude CD, whereas enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot were performed in case of discordant results. All assays were performed on CD patients (N = 10) for validation. Results: Ten blood donors had a positive ICT result, with a resulting T. cruzi seroprevalence of 0.5% but demonstrates negative results to CLIA, as well as to the other serological assays. The comparison of serological assays suggested a lower relative sensitivity of ICT. Conclusion: The results of this study confirm the significance of serological testing in the screening strategy for TT CD. However, they provide evidence for discontinuing the use of ICT as a screening test and suggest that a sensitive, specific and multi-sample format assay should be used at the national level for uniformity of results
