State-space model identification and feedback control of unsteady aerodynamic forces
Unsteady aerodynamic models are necessary to accurately simulate forces and
develop feedback controllers for wings in agile motion; however, these models
are often high dimensional or incompatible with modern control techniques.
Recently, reduced-order unsteady aerodynamic models have been developed for a
pitching and plunging airfoil by linearizing the discretized Navier-Stokes
equation with lift-force output. In this work, we extend these reduced-order
models to include multiple inputs (pitch, plunge, and surge) and explicit
parameterization by the pitch-axis location, inspired by Theodorsen's model.
Next, we investigate the na\"{\i}ve application of system identification
techniques to input--output data and the resulting pitfalls, such as unstable
or inaccurate models. Finally, robust feedback controllers are constructed
based on these low-dimensional state-space models for simulations of a rigid
flat plate at Reynolds number 100. Various controllers are implemented for
models linearized at base angles of attack , and . The resulting control laws are
able to track an aggressive reference lift trajectory while attenuating sensor
noise and compensating for strong nonlinearities.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figure
Spin Wave Theory of Double Exchange Ferromagnets
We construct the 1/S spin-wave expansion for double exchange ferromagnets at
T=0. It is assumed that the value of Hund's rule coupling, J_H, is sufficiently
large, resulting in a fully saturated, ferromagnetic half-metallic ground
state. We evaluate corrections to the magnon dispersion law, and we also find
that, in contrast to earlier statements in the literature, magnon-electron
scattering does give rise to spin wave damping. We analyse the momentum
dependence of these quantities and discuss the experimental implications for

Do we really need Confidence Intervals in the new statistics?
This paper compares the use of confidence intervals (CIs) and a sensitivity analysis called the number needed to disturb (NNTD), in the analysis of research findings expressed as ‘effect’ sizes. Using 1,000 simulations of randomised trials with up to 1,000 cases in each, the paper shows that both approaches are very similar in outcomes, and each one is highly predictable from the other. CIs are supposed to be a measure of likelihood or uncertainty in the results, showing a range of possible effect sizes that could have been produced by random sampling variation alone. NNTD is supposed to be a measure of the robustness of the effect size to any variation, including that produced by missing data. Given that they are largely equivalent and interchangeable under the conditions tested here, the paper suggests that both are really measures of robustness. It concludes that NNTD is to be preferred because it requires many fewer assumptions, is more tolerant of missing data, is easier to explain, and directly addresses the key question of whether the underlying effect size is zero or not
Synthesizing Coupled 3D Face Modalities by Trunk-Branch Generative Adversarial Networks
Generating realistic 3D faces is of high importance for computer graphics and
computer vision applications. Generally, research on 3D face generation
revolves around linear statistical models of the facial surface. Nevertheless,
these models cannot represent faithfully either the facial texture or the
normals of the face, which are very crucial for photo-realistic face synthesis.
Recently, it was demonstrated that Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can
be used for generating high-quality textures of faces. Nevertheless, the
generation process either omits the geometry and normals, or independent
processes are used to produce 3D shape information. In this paper, we present
the first methodology that generates high-quality texture, shape, and normals
jointly, which can be used for photo-realistic synthesis. To do so, we propose
a novel GAN that can generate data from different modalities while exploiting
their correlations. Furthermore, we demonstrate how we can condition the
generation on the expression and create faces with various facial expressions.
The qualitative results shown in this paper are compressed due to size

Endogenous opioids and attenuated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responses to immune challenge in pregnant rats
In late pregnant rats, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is hyporesponsive to psychogenic stressors. Here, we investigated attenuated HPA responses to an immune challenge and a role for endogenous opioids. ACTH and corticosterone were assayed in blood samples from virgin and 21 d pregnant rats before and after endotoxin [lipopolysaccharide (LPS); 1 mu g/kg, i.v.], interleukin-1{beta} (IL-1{beta}; 500 ng/kg, i.v.), or vehicle. In virgins, plasma ACTH concentrations increased 1 h after LPS and 15 min after IL-1{beta}, as did corticosterone, with no responses in pregnant rats. In situ hybridization revealed increased corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA expression in the dorsomedial parvocellular paraventricular nucleus (pPVN) and increased anterior pituitary pro-opiomelanocortin mRNA expression 4 h after IL-1{beta} in virgins; these responses were absent in pregnant rats. In contrast, immunocytochemistry showed that Fos expression was similarly increased in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) A2 region in virgin and pregnant rats 90 min and 4 h after IL-1{beta}. Naloxone pretreatment (5 mg/kg, i.v.) restored ACTH and pPVN CRH mRNA responses after IL-1{beta} in pregnant rats but reduced the CRH mRNA response in virgins without affecting ACTH. Proenkephalin-A and mu-opioid receptor mRNA expression in the NTS was significantly increased in the pregnant rats, indicating upregulated brainstem opioid mechanisms. IL-1{beta} increased noradrenaline release in the PVN of virgin, but not pregnant, rats. However, naloxone infused directly into the PVN increased noradrenaline release after IL-1{beta} in pregnant rats. Thus, the HPA axis responses to immune signals are suppressed in pregnancy at the level of pPVN CRH neurons through an opioid mechanism, possibly acting by preterminal autoinhibition of NTS projections to the pPVN
Farming on the edge: farmer attitudes to bovine tuberculosis in newly endemic areas
Defra's recent strategy to eradicate bovine tuberculosis (bTB) establishes three spatial zones: high-risk areas (HRAs) and low-risk areas, and an area referred to as ‘the edge’, which marks the areas where infection is spreading outwards from the HRA. Little is known about farmers in the edge area, their attitudes towards bTB and their farming practices. This paper examines farmers’ practices and attitudes towards bTB in standardised epidemiologically defined areas. A survey was developed to collect data on farmer attitudes, behaviours, practices and environmental conditions as part of an interdisciplinary analysis of bTB risk factors. Survey items were developed from a literature review and focus groups with vets and farmers in different locations within the edge area. A case-control sampling framework was adopted with farms sampled from areas identified as recently endemic for bTB. 347 farmers participated in the survey including 117 with bTB, representing a 70 percent response rate. Results show that farmers believe they are unable to do anything about bTB but are keen for the government intervention to help control the spread of bTB
Molecular and morphometric variation in European populations of the articulate brachiopod <i>Terebeatulina retusa</i>
Molecular and morphometric variation within and between population samples of the articulate brachiopod <i>Terebratulina</i> spp., collected in 1985-1987 from a Norwegian fjord, sea lochs and costal sites in western Scotland, the southern English Channel (Brittany) and the western Mediterranean, were measured by the analysis of variation in the lengths of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments produced by digestion with nine restriction endonucleases and by multivariate statistical analysis of six selected morphometric parameters. Nucleotide difference within each population sample was high. Nucleotide difference between population samples from the Scottish sites, both those that are tidally contiguous and those that appear to be geographically isolated, were not significantly different from zero. Nucleotide differences between the populations samples from Norway, Brittany, Scotland and the western Mediterranean were also very low. Morphometric analysis confirmed the absence of substantial differentiation
Closed-loop separation control over a sharp edge ramp using Genetic Programming
We experimentally perform open and closed-loop control of a separating
turbulent boundary layer downstream from a sharp edge ramp. The turbulent
boundary layer just above the separation point has a Reynolds number
based on momentum thickness. The goal of the
control is to mitigate separation and early re-attachment. The forcing employs
a spanwise array of active vortex generators. The flow state is monitored with
skin-friction sensors downstream of the actuators. The feedback control law is
obtained using model-free genetic programming control (GPC) (Gautier et al.
2015). The resulting flow is assessed using the momentum coefficient, pressure
distribution and skin friction over the ramp and stereo PIV. The PIV yields
vector field statistics, e.g. shear layer growth, the backflow area and vortex
region. GPC is benchmarked against the best periodic forcing. While open-loop
control achieves separation reduction by locking-on the shedding mode, GPC
gives rise to similar benefits by accelerating the shear layer growth.
