    The large-spin asymptotics of the ferromagnetic XXZ chain

    We present new results and give a concise review of recent previous results on the asymptotics for large spin of the low-lying spectrum of the ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg chain with kink boundary conditions. Our main interest is to gain detailed information on the interface ground states of this model and the low-lying excitations above them.     Adaptive fog service placement for real-time topology changes in Kubernetes clusters

    Recent trends have caused a shift from services deployed solely in monolithic data centers in the cloud to services deployed in the fog (e.g. roadside units for smart highways, support services for IoT devices). Simultaneously, the variety and number of IoT devices has grown rapidly, along with their reliance on cloud services. Additionally, many of these devices are now themselves capable of running containers, allowing them to execute some services previously deployed in the fog. The combination of IoT devices and fog computing has many advantages in terms of efficiency and user experience, but the scale, volatile topology and heterogeneous network conditions of the fog and the edge also present problems for service deployment scheduling. Cloud service scheduling often takes a wide array of parameters into account to calculate optimal solutions. However, the algorithms used are not generally capable of handling the scale and volatility of the fog. This paper presents a scheduling algorithm, named "Swirly", for large scale fog and edge networks, which is capable of adapting to changes in network conditions and connected devices. The algorithm details are presented and implemented as a service using the Kubernetes API. This implementation is validated and benchmarked, showing that a single threaded Swirly service is easily capable of managing service meshes for at least 300.000 devices in soft real-time

    Nonparametric tests of optimizing behavior in public service provision: Methodology and an application to local safety

    We develop a positive non-parametric model of public sector production that allows us to test whether an implicit procedure of cost minimization at shadow prices can rationalize the outcomes of public sector activities. The basic model focuses on multiple C-outputs and does not imply any explicit or implicit assumption regarding the trade-offs between the different inputs (in terms of relative shadow prices) or outputs (in terms of relative valuation). The proposed methodology is applied to a cross-section sample of 546 Belgian municipal police forces. Drawing on detailed task-allocation data and controlling, among others, for the presence of state police forces, the cost minimization hypothesis is found to provide a good fit of the data. Imposing additional structure on output valuation, derived from available ordinal information, yields equally convincing goodness-of-fit results. By contrast, we find that aggregating the labor input over task specializations, a common practice in efficiency assessments of police departments, entails a significantly worse fit of the data.Public agencies, optimizing behavior, nonparametric production, local police departments

    Alignment and integration of complex networks by hypergraph-based spectral clustering

    Complex networks possess a rich, multi-scale structure reflecting the dynamical and functional organization of the systems they model. Often there is a need to analyze multiple networks simultaneously, to model a system by more than one type of interaction or to go beyond simple pairwise interactions, but currently there is a lack of theoretical and computational methods to address these problems. Here we introduce a framework for clustering and community detection in such systems using hypergraph representations. Our main result is a generalization of the Perron-Frobenius theorem from which we derive spectral clustering algorithms for directed and undirected hypergraphs. We illustrate our approach with applications for local and global alignment of protein-protein interaction networks between multiple species, for tripartite community detection in folksonomies, and for detecting clusters of overlapping regulatory pathways in directed networks.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures; revised version with minor corrections and figures printed in two-column format for better readability; algorithm implementation and supplementary information available at Google code at http://schype.googlecode.co

    The relation between patient discomfort and uncompensated forces of a patient support device for breast and regional lymph node radiotherapy

    Although many authors stated that a user-centred design approach in medical device development has added values, the most common research approach within healthcare is evidence-based medicine, which tend to focus on functional data rather than patient wellbeing and comfort. End user comfort is well addressed in literature for commercial products such as seats and hand tools but no data was found for medical devices. A commercial patient support device for breast radiotherapy was analysed and a relation was found between discomfort and uncompensated internal body forces. Derived from CT-images, simplified patient free-body diagrams were analysed and pain and comfort evaluated. Subsequently, a new patient position was established and prototypes were developed. Patient comfort- and prototype optimization was done through iterative prototyping. With this approach, we were able to compensate all internal body forces and establish a force neutral patient free-body diagram. This resulted in comfortable patient positioning and favourable medical results
