During 2006 and 2007, we collected free-ranging Phrynops geoffroanus, from two anthropogenically altered rivers in southeastern Brazil. Oral microbiological samples were taken for isolation of aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria; a physical examination was performed;and we evaluated possible effects on the turtles’ health. Twenty-nine species of bacteria were isolated in Piracicaba River turtles (n=10), and twenty-four species in Piracicamirim stream turtles (n=8), most of them gram-negative. In both sites, potential pathogens for reptiles were: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter agglomerans, Citrobacter freundii, and Bacillus sp. Although boatpropeller lesions were common on the carapace of the turtles, we have not found turtles with signs of clinical diseases. The oral bacterial microbiota of P. geoffroanus inhabiting the Piracicaba River basin are composed of a diverse microbe spectrum, and long-term studies of the effects of pollution and traumatic injuries on this population and its microbial flora are warranted

Microbiota bacteriana oral e lesões traumáticas no cágado Phrynops geoffroanus (Testudines, Chelidae) no sudeste do Brasil

During 2006 and 2007, we collected free-ranging Phrynops geoffroanus, from two anthropogenically altered rivers in southeastern Brazil. This work uses a Flir Lepton 3 longwave infrared imager integrated with a Raspberry Pi computer to produce thermal images of crops. The longwave infrared sensor can detect the thermal radiation emitted by objects near room temperature and then determine its temperature.Editores: Paulo Sérgio de Paula Herrmann Junior, Paulino Ribeiro Villas Boas

Load Index Metrics for an Optimized Management of Web Services: A Systematic Evaluation

    Get PDF
The lack of precision to predict service performance through load indices may lead to wrong decisions regarding the use of web services, compromising service performance and raising platform cost unnecessarily. This paper presents experimental studies to qualify the behaviour of load indices in the web service context. The experiments consider three services that generate controlled and significant server demands, four levels of workload for each service and six distinct execution scenarios. The evaluation considers three relevant perspectives: the capability for representing recent workloads, the capability for predicting near-future performance and finally stability. Eight different load indices were analysed, including the JMX Average Time index (proposed in this paper) specifically designed to address the limitations of the other indices. A systematic approach is applied to evaluate the different load indices, considering a multiple linear regression model based on the stepwise-AIC method. The results show that the load indices studied represent the workload to some extent; however, in contrast to expectations, most of them do not exhibit a coherent correlation with service performance and this can result in stability problems. The JMX Average Time index is an exception, showing a stable behaviour which is tightly-coupled to the service runtime for all executions. Load indices are used to predict the service runtime and therefore their inappropriate use can lead to decisions that will impact negatively on both service performance and execution cost

This project is originally designed to be used in rice genetic enhancement fields, but it can be used for other purposes, for example, to verify if any part of the tillage has a disease, when comparing the thermal signature of the species with the thermal map.Editores: Paulo Sérgio de Paula Herrmann Junior, Paulino Ribeiro Villas Boas

Spin-Polarized STM for a Kondo adatom

We investigate the bias dependence of the tunneling conductance between a spin-polarized (SP) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and the surface conduction states of a normal metal with a Kondo adatom. Quantum interference between tip-host metal and tip-adatom-host metal conduction paths is studied in the full range of the Fano parameter qq. The spin-polarized STM gives rise to a splitting of the Kondo peak and asymmetry in the zero-bias anomaly depending on the lateral tip-adatom distance. For increasing lateral distances, the Kondo peak-splitting shows a strong suppression and the spin-polarized conductance exhibits the standard Fano-Kondo profile.Comment: new version with improved discussion. added one figure. 12 pages (one-column) + 5 figure

Solid state electrochromic display based on polymer electrode-polymer electrolyte interface

    Get PDF
The electropolymerization of ortho-toluidine and ortho-anisidine gave uniform electroactive polymer films which were analysed by cyclic voltammetry, impedance and uv-vis absorption spectra. These films exhibit a reversible electrochemical response during cyclic voltammetry experiments in aqueous, non-aqueous and polymer electrolytes. Their electrochromic efficiency is high in aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes but decreases in the polymer electrolyte. A solid state cell having the configuration ITO/TiO2-CeO2/LiN(SO2CF3)2-PEO complex/polymer/ITO, has been assembled. The transmittance variation of this system between the oxidized and reduced state is about 20% at 632.8 nm
