Trading Zones: Building Connections to Past Research in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

    Get PDF
Faculty face significant challenges when moving into scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) for the first time. Perhaps the greatest of these challenges is the act of building connections to past research, both within the individual scholar’s field, and more broadly across the disciplines. This article examines the nature of this challenge, and how it can be partially mitigated through collaboration. The challenge, however, is monumental, and a national mandate must be issued for the creation of a scholarship of teaching and learning database that is easily accessible to faculty across the United States and the world

Angular trapping of a mirror using radiation pressure

Alignment control in gravitational-wave detectors has consistently proven to be a dicult problem due to the stringent noise contamination requirement for the gravitational wave readout and the radiation-pressure induced angular instability in Fabry- Perot cavities (Sidles-Sigg instability). In this thesis, I present optical springs as a tool to damp the motion of a mirror. I discuss the design and implementation of a single degree-of-freedom optical spring system and the importance of the photothermal eect in properly predicting optical spring behavior. I also present the development and implementation of an angular control scheme, attempting to damp two degrees of freedom with two optical cavities. I then extend this understanding into a plausible concept for implementing optical-spring-based angular control in the Advanced LIGO detectors

Elementary Music through Drama: A Sequential Resource Guide

    Get PDF
This project is a sequential resource guide of introductory music experiences that utilize drama techniques all of which culminate with performances. This particular resource guide is designed to be used in conjunction with the general music curriculum where musical ideas and concepts are the main focus for learning. Drama is introduced into the resource guide to augment the existing music program. The use of drama is used to reinforce these musical concepts and thus enhance the musical experience

Moving Toward the Center: The Integration of Educational Development in an Era of Historic Change in Higher Education

Educational developers have generally articulated their mission around three major poles: faculty/professional development, instructional development, and organizational development (Diamond, 2002; Lewis, 1996). While the first two poles have received greater attention in the past, an increasing amount of emphasis is being placed on organizational development. This shift is a result of a growing tendency to see educational development as an integral component in helping colleges and universities effect change in multiple areas. The challenges higher education faces “require multiple teams of cross-unit expertise in order to make progress” (Schroeder, 2011, p. 202), and educational developers are often called on to be facilitators or catalysts of change. This article examines the results of a survey that collected data on the reorganization and integration of Centers of Teaching and Learning (CTLs) with other educational and administrative units, including the timing, level and effect of integration. A second element of the survey asked respondents to evaluate the process of change. Our study shows that change brings with it challenges and benefits as CTLs continue to make decisive moves to “come in from the margins” (Schroeder, 2011)
