Probability distribution of the order parameter for the 3D Ising model universality class: a high precision Monte Carlo study
We study the probability distribution P(M) of the order parameter (average
magnetization) M, for the finite-size systems at the critical point. The
systems under consideration are the 3-dimensional Ising model on a simple cubic
lattice, and its 3-state generalization known to have remarkably small
corrections to scaling. Both models are studied in a cubic box with periodic
boundary conditions. The model with reduced corrections to scaling makes it
possible to determine P(M) with unprecedented precision. We also obtain a
simple, but remarkably accurate approximate formula describing the universal

FUSE Measurements of Far Ultraviolet Extinction. I. Galactic Sight Lines
We present extinction curves that include data down to far ultraviolet
wavelengths (FUV; 1050 - 1200 A) for nine Galactic sight lines. The FUV
extinction was measured using data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic
Explorer. The sight lines were chosen for their unusual extinction properties
in the infrared through the ultraviolet; that they probe a wide range of dust
environments is evidenced by the large spread in their measured ratios of
total-to-selective extinction, R_V = 2.43 - 3.81. We find that extrapolation of
the Fitzpatrick & Massa relationship from the ultraviolet appears to be a good
predictor of the FUV extinction behavior. We find that predictions of the FUV
extinction based upon the Cardelli, Clayton & Mathis (CCM) dependence on R_V
give mixed results. For the seven extinction curves well represented by CCM in
the infrared through ultraviolet, the FUV extinction is well predicted in three
sight lines, over-predicted in two sight lines, and under-predicted in 2 sight
lines. A Maximum Entropy Method analysis using a simple three component grain
model shows that seven of the nine sight lines in the study require a larger
fraction of grain materials to be in dust when FUV extinction is included in
the models. Most of the added grain material is in the form of small (radii <

Fourier Acceleration of Langevin Molecular Dynamics
Fourier acceleration has been successfully applied to the simulation of
lattice field theories for more than a decade. In this paper, we extend the
method to the dynamics of discrete particles moving in continuum. Although our
method is based on a mapping of the particles' dynamics to a regular grid so
that discrete Fourier transforms may be taken, it should be emphasized that the
introduction of the grid is a purely algorithmic device and that no smoothing,
coarse-graining or mean-field approximations are made. The method thus can be
applied to the equations of motion of molecular dynamics (MD), or its Langevin
or Brownian variants. For example, in Langevin MD simulations our acceleration
technique permits a straightforward spectral decomposition of forces so that
the long-wavelength modes are integrated with a longer time step, thereby
reducing the time required to reach equilibrium or to decorrelate the system in
equilibrium. Speedup factors of up to 30 are observed relative to pure
(unaccelerated) Langevin MD. As with acceleration of critical lattice models,
even further gains relative to the unaccelerated method are expected for larger
systems. Preliminary results for Fourier-accelerated molecular dynamics are
presented in order to illustrate the basic concepts. Possible extensions of the

Gemini Planet Imager Observational Calibrations VI: Photometric and Spectroscopic Calibration for the Integral Field Spectrograph
The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a new facility instrument for the Gemini
Observatory designed to provide direct detection and characterization of
planets and debris disks around stars in the solar neighborhood. In addition to
its extreme adaptive optics and corona graphic systems which give access to
high angular resolution and high-contrast imaging capabilities, GPI contains an
integral field spectrograph providing low resolution spectroscopy across five
bands between 0.95 and 2.5 m. This paper describes the sequence of
processing steps required for the spectro-photometric calibration of GPI
science data, and the necessary calibration files. Based on calibration
observations of the white dwarf HD 8049B we estimate that the systematic error
in spectra extracted from GPI observations is less than 5%. The flux ratio of
the occulted star and fiducial satellite spots within coronagraphic GPI
observations, required to estimate the magnitude difference between a target
and any resolved companions, was measured in the -band to be in laboratory measurements and using
on-sky observations. Laboratory measurements for the , , and
filters are also presented. The total throughput of GPI, Gemini South and the
atmosphere of the Earth was also measured in each photometric passband, with a
typical throughput in -band of 18% in the non-coronagraphic mode, with some
variation observed over the six-month period for which observations were
available. We also report ongoing development and improvement of the data cube

Alvimopan for the Management of Postoperative Ileus After Bowel Resection: Characterization of Clinical Benefit by Pooled Responder Analysis
BACKGROUND: A pooled post hoc responder analysis was performed to assess the clinical benefit of alvimopan, a peripherally acting mu-opioid receptor (PAM-OR) antagonist, for the management of postoperative ileus after bowel resection.
METHODS: Adult patients who underwent laparotomy for bowel resection scheduled for opioid-based intravenous patient-controlled analgesia received oral alvimopan or placebo preoperatively and twice daily postoperatively until hospital discharge or for 7 postoperative days. The proportion of responders and numbers needed to treat (NNT) were examined on postoperative days (POD) 3-8 for GI-2 recovery (first bowel movement, toleration of solid food) and hospital discharge order (DCO) written.
RESULTS: Alvimopan significantly increased the proportion of patients with GI-2 recovery and DCO written by each POD (P \u3c 0.001 for all). More patients who received alvimopan achieved GI-2 recovery on or before POD 5 (alvimopan, 80%; placebo, 66%) and DCO written before POD 7 (alvimopan, 87%; placebo, 72%), with corresponding NNTs equal to 7.
CONCLUSIONS: On each POD analyzed, alvimopan significantly increased the proportion of patients who achieved GI-2 recovery and DCO written versus placebo and was associated with relatively low NNTs. The results of these analyses provide additional characterization and support for the overall clinical benefit of alvimopan in patients undergoing bowel resection
Constraints on the architecture of the HD 95086 planetary system with the Gemini Planet Imager
We present astrometric monitoring of the young exoplanet HD 95086 b obtained
with the Gemini Planet Imager between 2013 and 2016. A small but significant
position angle change is detected at constant separation; the orbital motion is
confirmed with literature measurements. Efficient Monte Carlo techniques place
preliminary constraints on the orbital parameters of HD 95086 b. With 68%
confidence, a semimajor axis of 61.7^{+20.7}_{-8.4} au and an inclination of
153.0^{+9.7}_{-13.5} deg are favored, with eccentricity less than 0.21. Under
the assumption of a co-planar planet-disk system, the periastron of HD 95086 b
is beyond 51 au with 68% confidence. Therefore HD 95086 b cannot carve the
entire gap inferred from the measured infrared excess in the SED of HD 95086.
We use our sensitivity to additional planets to discuss specific scenarios
presented in the literature to explain the geometry of the debris belts. We
suggest that either two planets on moderately eccentric orbits or three to four
planets with inhomogeneous masses and orbital properties are possible. The
sensitivity to additional planetary companions within the observations
presented in this study can be used to help further constrain future dynamical
simulations of the planet-disk system.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
Prenatal Phthalate Exposures and Body Mass Index Among 4- to 7-Year-old Children: A Pooled Analysis
Phthalates are hypothesized to cause obesity, but few studies have assessed whether prenatal phthalate exposures are related to childhood body mass index (BMI)
The Peculiar Debris Disk of HD 111520 as Resolved by the Gemini Planet Imager
Using the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), we have resolved the circumstellar
debris disk around HD 111520 at a projected range of ~30-100 AU in both total
and polarized -band intensity. The disk is seen edge-on at a position angle
of ~165 along the spine of emission. A slight inclination or
asymmetric warping are covariant and alters the interpretation of the observed
disk emission. We employ 3 point spread function (PSF) subtraction methods to
reduce the stellar glare and instrumental artifacts to confirm that there is a
roughly 2:1 brightness asymmetry between the NW and SE extension. This specific
feature makes HD 111520 the most extreme examples of asymmetric debris disks
observed in scattered light among similar highly inclined systems, such as HD
15115 and HD 106906. We further identify a tentative localized brightness
enhancement and scale height enhancement associated with the disk at ~40 AU
away from the star on the SE extension. We also find that the fractional
polarization rises from 10 to 40% from 0.5" to 0.8" from the star. The
combination of large brightness asymmetry and symmetric polarization fraction
leads us to believe that an azimuthal dust density variation is causing the

Prenatal Organophosphorus Pesticide Exposure and Child Neurodevelopment at 24 Months: An Analysis of Four Birth Cohorts
BACKGROUND: Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are used in agriculture worldwide. Residential use was common in the United States before 2001.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted a pooled analysis of four birth cohorts (children's centers; n = 936) to evaluate associations of prenatal exposure to OPs with child development at 24 months.
METHODS: Using general linear models, we computed site-specific and pooled estimates of the association of total dialkyl (ÎŁDAP), diethyl (ÎŁDEP), and dimethylphosphate (ÎŁDMP) metabolite concentrations in maternal prenatal urine with mental and psychomotor development indices (MDI/PDI) and evaluated heterogeneity by children's center, race/ethnicity, and PON1 genotype.
RESULTS: There was significant heterogeneity in the center-specific estimates of association for ÎŁDAP and ÎŁDMP and the MDI (p = 0.09, and p = 0.05, respectively), as well as heterogeneity in the race/ethnicity-specific estimates for ÎŁDAP (p = 0.06) and ÎŁDMP (p = 0.02) and the MDI. Strong MDI associations in the CHAMACOS population per 10-fold increase in ÎŁDAP (ÎČ = -4.17; 95% CI: -7.00, -1.33) and ÎŁDMP (ÎČ = -3.64; 95% CI: -5.97, -1.32) were influential, as were associations among Hispanics (ÎČ per 10-fold increase in ÎŁDAP = -2.91; 95% CI: -4.71, -1.12). We generally found stronger negative associations of ÎŁDAP and ÎŁDEP with the 24-month MDI for carriers of the 192Q PON1 allele, particularly among blacks and Hispanics.
CONCLUSIONS: Data pooling was complicated by center-related differences in subject characteristics, eligibility, and changes in regulations governing residential use of OPs during the study periods. Pooled summary estimates of prenatal exposure to OPs and neurodevelopment should be interpreted with caution because of significant heterogeneity in associations by center, race/ethnicity, and PON1 genotype. Subgroups with unique exposure profiles or susceptibilities may be at higher risk for adverse neurodevelopment following prenatal exposure.
