    Penetration of human skin by the cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni : an investigation of the effect of multiple cercarial applications

    It has previously been postulated that L-arginine emitted by penetrating Schistosoma mansoni cercariae serves as an intraspecific signal guiding other cercariae to the penetration site. It was suggested that penetrating in groups offers a selective advantage. If this hypothesis is correct and group penetration at one site on the host offers an advantage, it would follow that at such a site, successive groups of cercariae would be able to penetrate skin in either greater numbers or at a faster rate. This prediction was tested by the use of an in vitro model of cercarial penetration based on the Franz cell and using human skin. It was demonstrated that there was no increase in the percentage of cercariae able to penetrate the skin with subsequent exposures. Consequently, it seems unlikely that the release of L-arginine by cercariae during penetration could have evolved as a specific orientation system based on a selective advantage offered by group penetration.Peer reviewe

    Total reaction cross sections for neutron-nucleus scattering

    Neutron total reaction cross sections at 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 75 MeV from nuclei 12C, 28Si, 56Fe, 90Zr, and 208Pb have been measured and are compared with (microscopic) optical model predictions. The optical potentials were obtained in coordinate space by full folding effective nucleon-nucleon interactions with realistic nuclear ground state density matrices.     Improving interval estimation of binomial proportions

    In this paper, we propose one new confidence interval for the binomial proportion; our interval is based on the Edgeworth expansion of a logit transformation of the sample proportion. We provide theoretical justification for the proposed interval and also compare the finite-sample performance of the proposed interval with the three best existing intervals—the Wilson interval, the Agresti–Coull interval and the Jeffreys interval—in terms of their coverage probabilities and expected lengths. We illustrate the proposed method in two real clinical studies

    Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1<y<1}. For the Couette flow v_0=(y,0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation at v_0 decays in time. At the nonlinear level, such inviscid damping has not been proved. First, we show that in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal horizontal period. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow and for any horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behavior in such neighborhoods are very rich, including nontrivial steady flows, stable and unstable manifolds of nearby unstable shears. Second, in the (vorticity) H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette, we show that there exist no non-parallel steadily travelling flows v(x-ct,y), and no unstable shears. This suggests that the long time dynamics in H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhoods of Couette might be much simpler. Such contrasting dynamics in H^{s} spaces with the critical power s=(3/2) is a truly nonlinear phenomena, since the linear inviscid damping near Couette is true for any initial vorticity in L^2

    Application of regulatory sequence analysis and metabolic network analysis to the interpretation of gene expression data

    We present two complementary approaches for the interpretation of clusters of co-regulated genes, such as those obtained from DNA chips and related methods. Starting from a cluster of genes with similar expression profiles, two basic questions can be asked: 1. Which mechanism is responsible for the coordinated transcriptional response of the genes? This question is approached by extracting motifs that are shared between the upstream sequences of these genes. The motifs extracted are putative cis-acting regulatory elements. 2. What is the physiological meaning for the cell to express together these genes? One way to answer the question is to search for potential metabolic pathways that could be catalyzed by the products of the genes. This can be done by selecting the genes from the cluster that code for enzymes, and trying to assemble the catalyzed reactions to form metabolic pathways. We present tools to answer these two questions, and we illustrate their use with selected examples in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.     The UK risk assessment scheme for all non-native species

A pest risk assessment scheme, adapted from the EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation) scheme, was developed to assess the risks posed to UK species, habitats and ecosystems by non-native taxa. 2. The scheme provides a structured framework for evaluating the potential for non-native organisms, whether intentional or unintentional introductions, to enter, establish, spread and cause significant impacts in all or part of the UK. Specialist modules permit the relative importance of entry pathways, the vulnerability of receptors and the consequences of policies to be assessed and appropriate risk management options to be selected. Spreadsheets for summarising the level of risk and uncertainty, invasive attributes and economic impact were created. In addition, new methods for quantifying economic impact and summarising risk and uncertainty were explored. 3. Although designed for the UK, the scheme can readily be applied elsewhere

    Nonperturbative bound on high multiplicity cross sections in phi^4_3 from lattice simulation

    We have looked for evidence of large cross sections at large multiplicities in weakly coupled scalar field theory in three dimensions. We use spectral function sum rules to derive bounds on total cross sections where the sum can be expresed in terms of a quantity which can be measured by Monte Carlo simulation in Euclidean space.
