    Studies on Seasonal Changes in the Temperature Gradient of the Active Layer of Soil at Fort Churchill, Manitoba

    Reports Canadian Defence Research Board's study, 1950-54. Experiments on rates of freeze and thaw of the active layer are described, showing the effects of surface cover, snow cover and characteristics determining the ability of the soil to conduct and absorb heat. Soil temperatures at varying depths were obtained at stations in swamp and high, dry areas of forested and non-forested localities by means of copper-constantan thermocouples and a portable potentiometer. Snow depth, water level measurements and snow temperatures were recorded for part of the time. Correlations between ambient air temperatures and soil temperatures at varying depths and with varying moisture content, ground and snow covers are presented in graphic and tabular form and discussed; also changes in snow temperature at different depths. Findings show a lag, increasing with depth and longest in relatively dry areas, of soil temperature behind ambient air temperatures; and variations in the effect of snow cover according to its hardness, moisture content and depth. The thermal gradient of the snow is affected by changes in temperature of the ambient air and of the soil, ice or water below it

    How the quark self-energy affects the color-superconducting gap

    We consider color superconductivity with two flavors of massless quarks which form Cooper pairs with total spin zero. We solve the gap equation for the color-superconducting gap parameter to subleading order in the QCD coupling constant gg at zero temperature. At this order in gg, there is also a previously neglected contribution from the real part of the quark self-energy to the gap equation. Including this contribution leads to a reduction of the color-superconducting gap parameter \f_0 by a factor b_0'=\exp \big[ -(\p ^2+4)/8 \big]\simeq 0.177. On the other hand, the BCS relation T_c\simeq 0.57\f_0 between \f_0 and the transition temperature TcT_c is shown to remain valid after taking into account corrections from the quark self-energy.     Gluon self-energy in a two-flavor color superconductor

    The energy and momentum dependence of the gluon self-energy is investigated in a color superconductor with two flavors of massless quarks. The presence of a color-superconducting quark-quark condensate modifies the gluon self-energy for energies which are of the order of the gap parameter. For gluon energies much larger than the gap, the self-energy assumes the form given by the standard hard-dense loop approximation. It is shown that this modification of the gluon self-energy does not affect the magnitude of the gap to leading and subleading order in the weak-coupling limit.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, RevTeX, aps and epsfig style files require

    In crystalline color superconductivity, quark pairs form at non-zero total momentum. This crystalline order potentially enlarges the domain of color superconductivity in cold dense quark matter. We present a perturbative calculation of the parameters governing the crystalline phase and show that this is indeed the case.     Photon interferometry and size of the hot zone in relativistic heavy ion collisions

    The parameters obtained from the theoretical analysis of the single photon spectra observed by the WA98 collaboration at SPS energies have been used to evaluate the two photon correlation functions. The single photon spectra and the two photon correlations at RHIC energies have also been evaluated, taking into account the effects of the possible spectral change of hadrons in a thermal bath. We find that the ratio Rside/Rout1R_{side}/R_{out} \sim 1 for SPS and Rside/Rout<1R_{side}/R_{out} <1 for RHIC energy.Comment: text changed, figures adde

    I compute the gluon self-energy in a color superconductor with two flavors of massless quarks, where condensation of Cooper pairs breaks SU(3)_c to SU(2)_c. At zero temperature, there is neither Debye screening nor a Meissner effect for the three gluons of the unbroken SU(2)_c subgroup. The remaining five gluons attain an electric as well as a magnetic mass. For temperatures approaching the critical temperature for the onset of color superconductivity, or for gluon momenta much larger than the color-superconducting gap, the self-energy assumes the form given by the standard hard-dense loop approximation. The gluon self-energy determines the coefficient of the kinetic term in the effective low-energy theory for the condensate fields.Comment: 29 pages, RevTe

    The use of an e-learning constructivist solution in workplace learning

    We wished to investigate whether an e-learning approach which uses constructivist principles can be successfully applied to train employees in a highly specialised skill thought to require expert individuals and extensive prolonged training. The approach involved the development of an e-learning package which included simulations and interactivity, then experimental testing in a case study workplace environment with the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data to assess the effectiveness of the package. Our study shows that this e-learning strategy improved the skills of the inexperienced operator significantly. We therefore propose that such programmes could be used as a work based training aid and used as a model system for the training of employees in complex skilled tasks in the workplace. This research demonstrates that the e-learning can be applied outside the traditional learning environment to train unskilled employees to undertake complex practical tasks which traditionally would involve prohibitively expensive instruction. This work also illustrates that simulations and interactivity are powerful tools in the design of successful e-learning packages in preparing learners for real world practical situations. Finally this study shows that workplace learners can be better served by elearning environments rather than conventional training as they allow asynchronous learning and private study which are valued by employees who have other demands on their time and are more comfortable receiving tuition privately Relevance to industry: E-learning using constructivist principles, and incorporating simulations and interactivity can be used successfully in the training of highly specialised and skilled tasks required in the modern workplace

    On the Perturbative Nature of Color Superconductivity

    Color superconductivity is a possible phase of high density QCD. We present a systematic derivation of the transition temperature, T_C, from the QCD Lagrangian through study of the di-quark proper vertex. With this approach, we confirm the dependence of T_C on the coupling g, namely TCμg5eκ/gT_C \sim \mu g^{-5} e^{-\kappa/g}, previously obtained from the one-gluon exchange approximation in the superconducting phase. The diagrammatic approach we employ allows us to examine the perturbative expansion of the vertex and the propagators. We find an additional O(1) contribution to the prefactor of the exponential from the one-loop quark self energy and that the other one-loop radiative contributions and the two gluon exchange vertex contribution are subleading.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, revtex, details and discussion expande
