Algorithm based comparison between the integral method and harmonic analysis of the timing jitter of diode-based and solid-state pulsed laser sources
AbstractA comparison between two methods of timing jitter calculation is presented. The integral method utilizes spectral area of the single side-band (SSB) phase noise spectrum to calculate root mean square (rms) timing jitter. In contrast the harmonic analysis exploits the uppermost noise power in high harmonics to retrieve timing fluctuation. The results obtained show that a consistent timing jitter of 1.2ps is found by the integral method and harmonic analysis in gain-switched laser diodes with an external cavity scheme. A comparison of the two approaches in noise measurement of a diode-pumped Yb:KY(WO4)2 passively mode-locked laser is also shown in which both techniques give 2ps rms timing jitter
TEXES Observations of M Supergiants: Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Wind Acceleration
We have detected [Fe II] 17.94 um and 24.52 um emission from a sample of M
supergiants using TEXES on the IRTF. These low opacity emission lines are
resolved at R = 50, 000 and provide new diagnostics of the dynamics and
thermodynamics of the stellar wind acceleration zone. The [Fe II] lines, from
the first excited term, are sensitive to the warm plasma where energy is
deposited into the extended atmosphere to form the chromosphere and wind
outflow. These diagnostics complement previous KAO and ISO observations which
were sensitive to the cooler and more extended circumstellar envelopes. The
turbulent velocities, Vturb is about 12 to 13 km/s, observed in the [Fe II]
forbidden lines are found to be a common property of our sample, and are less
than that derived from the hotter chromospheric C II] 2325 Angstrom lines
observed in alpha Ori, where Vturb is about 17 to 19 km/s. For the first time,
we have dynamically resolved the motions of the dominant cool atmospheric
component discovered in alpha Ori from multi-wavelength radio interferometry by
Lim et al. (1998). Surprisingly, the emission centroids are quite Gaussian and
at rest with respect to the M supergiants. These constraints combined with
model calculations of the infrared emission line fluxes for alpha Ori imply
that the warm material has a low outflow velocity and is located close to the
star. We have also detected narrow [Fe I] 24.04 um emission that confirms that
Fe II is the dominant ionization state in alpha Ori's extended atmosphere.Comment: 79 pages including 10 figures and 2 appendices. Accepted by Ap
Interferometric method for determining the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients (e1+e3) in an ionic nematic material
The time-dependent periodic distortion profile in a nematic liquid crystal phase grating has been measured from the displacement of tilt fringes in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A 0.2 Hz squarewave voltage was applied to alternate stripe electrodes in an interdigitated electrode geometry. The time-dependent distortion profile is asymmetric with respect to the polarity of the applied voltage and decays with time during each half period due to ionic shielding. This asymmetry in the response allows the determination of the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients (e1+e3) using nematic continuum theory since the device geometry does not possess inherent asymmetry
Constraining the variation of fundamental constants using 18cm OH lines
We describe a new technique to estimate variations in the fundamental
constants using 18cm OH absorption lines. This has the advantage that all lines
arise in the same species, allowing a clean comparison between the measured
redshifts. In conjunction with one additional transition (for example, an
HCO line), it is possible to simultaneously measure changes in ,
and . At present, only the 1665 MHz and 1667 MHz lines
have been detected at cosmological distances; we use these line redshifts in
conjunction with those of HI 21cm and mm-wave molecular absorption in a
gravitational lens at to constrain changes in the above three
parameters over the redshift range . While the constraints
are relatively weak ( 1 part in ), this is the first
simultaneous constraint on the variation of all three parameters. We also
demonstrate that either one (or more) of , and must vary with
cosmological time or there must be systematic velocity offsets between the OH,

Design strategies for low embodied energy and greenhouse gases in buildings: analyses of the IEA Annex 57 case studies
This paper introduces the IEA Annex 57 case study method, consisting of a format for describing individual case studies and an evaluation matrix covering all case studies. Sample case studies are used to illustrate the method and the evaluation matrix through a first preliminary analysis. In compiling and evaluation existing, transparent case studies we have taken a stakeholder perspective. By so doing it is intended to identify fordecision makers the key issues affecting EE/EC in buildings. Analysis in this paper focuses on one of the six case study themes, building design strategies for EE/EC mitigation and references cases covering e.g. material selection, building shape, construction stage strategies and strategies to handle the trade-off between embodied and operational impacts in net-zero emission building design
Quark condensates in the chiral bag with the NJL interaction
We discuss the quark condensate of the vacuum inside the baryon. We analyze
the 1+1 dimensional chiral bag in analogy with the realistic 3+1 dimensional
one. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type interaction is used to investigate the
quark condensate in the chiral bag. Considering the strong meson-quark
coupling, we solve the mean field solution to the scalar and pseudoscalar
channels by including the chiral Casimir effects. The self-consistent equation
allows a finite value of the quark condensate and hence a finite dynamical
quark mass inside the bag. It is shown that an approximate Cheshire Cat picture
holds for massive quarks
Joint evolution of multiple social traits: a kin selection analysis
General models of the evolution of cooperation, altruism and other social behaviours have focused almost entirely on single traits, whereas it is clear that social traits commonly interact. We develop a general kin-selection framework for the evolution of social behaviours in multiple dimensions. We show that whenever there are interactions among social traits new behaviours can emerge that are not predicted by one-dimensional analyses. For example, a prohibitively costly cooperative trait can ultimately be favoured owing to initial evolution in other (cheaper) social traits that in turn change the cost-benefit ratio of the original trait. To understand these behaviours, we use a two-dimensional stability criterion that can be viewed as an extension of Hamilton's rule. Our principal example is the social dilemma posed by, first, the construction and, second, the exploitation of a shared public good. We find that, contrary to the separate one-dimensional analyses, evolutionary feedback between the two traits can cause an increase in the equilibrium level of selfish exploitation with increasing relatedness, while both social (production plus exploitation) and asocial (neither) strategies can be locally stable. Our results demonstrate the importance of emergent stability properties of multidimensional social dilemmas, as one-dimensional stability in all component dimensions can conceal multidimensional instability
Digging supplementary buried channels: investigating the notch architecture within the CCD pixels on ESA's Gaia satellite
The European Space Agency (ESA) Gaia satellite has 106 CCD image sensors
which will suffer from increased charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) as a result
of radiation damage. To aid the mitigation at low signal levels, the CCD design
includes Supplementary Buried Channels (SBCs, otherwise known as `notches')
within each CCD column. We present the largest published sample of Gaia CCD SBC
Full Well Capacity (FWC) laboratory measurements and simulations based on 13
devices. We find that Gaia CCDs manufactured post-2004 have SBCs with FWCs in
the upper half of each CCD that are systematically smaller by two orders of
magnitude (<50 electrons) compared to those manufactured pre-2004 (thousands of
electrons). Gaia's faint star (13 < G < 20 mag) astrometric performance
predictions by Prod'homme et al. and Holl et al. use pre-2004 SBC FWCs as
inputs to their simulations. However, all the CCDs already integrated onto the
satellite for the 2013 launch are post-2004. SBC FWC measurements are not
available for one of our five post-2004 CCDs but the fact it meets Gaia's image
location requirements suggests it has SBC FWCs similar to pre-2004. It is too
late to measure the SBC FWCs onboard the satellite and it is not possible to
theoretically predict them. Gaia's faint star astrometric performance
predictions depend on knowledge of the onboard SBC FWCs but as these are
currently unavailable, it is not known how representative of the whole focal
plane the current predictions are. Therefore, we suggest Gaia's initial
in-orbit calibrations should include measurement of the onboard SBC FWCs. We
present a potential method to do this. Faint star astrometric performance
predictions based on onboard SBC FWCs at the start of the mission would allow
satellite operating conditions or CTI software mitigation to be further

Fatty-acid uptake in prostate cancer cells using dynamic microfluidic raman technology
It is known that intake of dietary fatty acid (FA) is strongly correlated with prostate cancer progression but is highly dependent on the type of FAs. High levels of palmitic acid (PA) or arachidonic acid (AA) can stimulate the progression of cancer. In this study, a unique experimental set-up consisting of a Raman microscope, coupled with a commercial shear-flow microfluidic system is used to monitor fatty acid uptake by prostate cancer (PC-3) cells in real-time at the single cell level. Uptake of deuterated PA, deuterated AA, and the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were monitored using this new system, while complementary flow cytometry experiments using Nile red staining, were also conducted for the validation of the cellular lipid uptake. Using this novel experimental system, we show that DHA and EPA have inhibitory effects on the uptake of PA and AA by PC-3 cells
