A Correlation Between Inclination and Color in the Classical Kuiper Belt
We have measured broadband optical BVR photometry of 24 Classical and
Scattered Kuiper belt objects (KBOs), approximately doubling the published
sample of colors for these classes of objects. We find a statistically
significant correlation between object color and inclination in the Classical
Kuiper belt using our data. The color and inclination correlation increases in
significance after the inclusion of additional data points culled from all
published works. Apparently, this color and inclination correlation has not
been more widely reported because the Plutinos show no such correlation, and
thus have been a major contaminant in previous samples. The color and
inclination correlation excludes simple origins of color diversity, such as the
presence of a coloring agent without regard to dynamical effects.
Unfortunately, our current knowledge of the Kuiper belt precludes us from
understanding whether the color and inclination trend is due to environmental
factors, such as collisional resurfacing, or primordial population effects. A
perihelion and color correlation is also evident, although this appears to be a
spurious correlation induced by sampling bias, as perihelion and inclination
are correlated in the observed sample of KBOs.Comment: Accepted to Astrophysical Journal Letter
Analysis of Algorithms for Velocity Estimation from Discrete Position Versus Time Data
Algorithms for constructing velocity approximations from discrete position versus time data are investigated. The study is limited to algorithms suitable to provide velocity information in discrete-time feedback control systems such as microprocessor-based systems with a discrete position encoder. Velocity estimators based on lines per period, reciprocal-time, Taylor series expansion, backward difference expansions, and least-square curve fits are presented. Based on computer simulations, comparisons of relative accuracies of the different algorithms are made. The least-squares velocity estimators filtered the effect of imperfect measurements best, whereas the Taylor series expansions and backward difference equation estimators respond better to velocity transients

A new map-making algorithm for CMB polarisation experiments
With the temperature power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB)
at least four orders of magnitude larger than the B-mode polarisation power
spectrum, any instrumental imperfections that couple temperature to
polarisation must be carefully controlled and/or removed. Here we present two
new map-making algorithms that can create polarisation maps that are clean of
temperature-to-polarisation leakage systematics due to differential gain and
pointing between a detector pair. Where a half wave plate is used, we show that
the spin-2 systematic due to differential ellipticity can also by removed using
our algorithms. The algorithms require no prior knowledge of the imperfections
or temperature sky to remove the temperature leakage. Instead, they calculate
the systematic and polarisation maps in one step directly from the time ordered
data (TOD). The first algorithm is designed to work with scan strategies that
have a good range of crossing angles for each map pixel and the second for scan
strategies that have a limited range of crossing angles. The first algorithm
can also be used to identify if systematic errors that have a particular spin
are present in a TOD. We demonstrate the use of both algorithms and the ability
to identify systematics with simulations of TOD with realistic scan strategies

Optimal scan strategies for future CMB satellite experiments
The B-mode polarisation power spectrum in the Cosmic Microwave Background
(CMB) is about four orders of magnitude fainter than the CMB temperature power
spectrum. Any instrumental imperfections that couple temperature fluctuations
to B-mode polarisation must therefore be carefully controlled and/or removed.
We investigate the role that a scan strategy can have in mitigating certain
common systematics by averaging systematic errors down with many crossing
angles. We present approximate analytic forms for the error on the recovered
B-mode power spectrum that would result from differential gain, differential
pointing and differential ellipticity for the case where two detector pairs are
used in a polarisation experiment. We use these analytic predictions to search
the parameter space of common satellite scan strategies in order to identify
those features of a scan strategy that have most impact in mitigating
systematic effects. As an example we go on to identify a scan strategy suitable
for the CMB satellite proposed for the ESA M5 call. considering the practical
considerations of fuel requirement, data rate and the relative orientation of
the telescope to the earth. Having chosen a scan strategy we then go on to

1I/2017 U1 (`Oumuamua) is Hot: Imaging, Spectroscopy and Search of Meteor Activity
1I/2017 U1 (`Oumuamua), a recently discovered asteroid in a hyperbolic orbit,
is likely the first macroscopic object of extrasolar origin identified in the
solar system. Here, we present imaging and spectroscopic observations of
\textquoteleft Oumuamua using the Palomar Hale Telescope as well as a search of
meteor activity potentially linked to this object using the Canadian Meteor
Orbit Radar. We find that \textquoteleft Oumuamua exhibits a moderate spectral
gradient of , a value significantly lower
than that of outer solar system bodies, indicative of a formation and/or
previous residence in a warmer environment. Imaging observation and spectral
line analysis show no evidence that \textquoteleft Oumuamua is presently
active. Negative meteor observation is as expected, since ejection driven by
sublimation of commonly-known cometary species such as CO requires an extreme
ejection speed of m s at au in order to reach the
Earth. No obvious candidate stars are proposed as the point of origin for
\textquoteleft Oumuamua. Given a mean free path of ly in the solar
neighborhood, \textquoteleft Oumuamua has likely spent a very long time in the

Scaling Studies Of Spheromak Formation And Equilibrium
Formation and equilibrium studies have been performed on the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX). Spheromaks are formed with a magnetized coaxial plasma gun and equilibrium is established in both small (d(small)=0.16 m) and large (d(large)=3d(small)=0.50 m) copper flux conservers. Using magnetic probe arrays it has been verified that spheromak formation is governed solely by gun physics (in particular the ratio of gun current to flux, mu(0)I(gun)/Phi(gun)) and is independent of the flux conserver dimensions. It has also been verified that equilibrium is well described by the force free condition del xB=lambda B (lambda=constant), particularly early in decay. Departures from the force-free state are due to current profile effects described by a quadratic function lambda=lambda(psi). Force-free SSX spheromaks will be merged to study magnetic reconnection in simple magnetofluid structures. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics
