    Myths and Fables of Electroconvulsive Therapy: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Stigmas of ECT in College Students

    This study builds upon extensive research on Electroconvulsive Therapy’s (ECT) effectiveness and advancements over time while providing insight into its continuous stigmatization as a psychotherapeutic treatment. The literature provided in this paper explores ECT’s historical background and its misrepresentations in society commonly perpetuated in the media. To further examine present day perceptions of ECT, this study evaluated Bard College undergraduate students’ (n = 24) knowledge, attitudes, and stigmas towards ECT. The data was collected using a five part questionnaire concerning the socio-demographic of participants (part 1), stigmas about ECT (part 2), knowledge about ECT (part 3), sources of knowledge of ECT (part 4), and attitudes towards ECT (part 5). Findings illustrate that students with more stigmatized beliefs had more negative attitudes towards ECT. Students studying in the Science, Math, & Computing (SMC) Department had significantly more positive attitudes towards ECT than students studying in the Social Studies (SS) Department. Where students learned or heard of ECT, specifically ‘Internet’ and ‘Non-medical Books’, impacted both knowledge and attitude rates. Students who learned about ECT from three or more sources of knowledge had more positive attitudes and lower stigmatized beliefs towards ECT than students who had two or less sources of knowledge. This study contributes to research which aims to provide a more balanced depiction of ECT and should inspire continued exploration in this domain.     Are Long-Term Antibiotic Treatments Safe And Effective In Treating Patients 16 And Older With Disseminated Lyme Disease?

    Objective: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not long-term antibiotic treatments are safe and effective in treating patients 16 and older with disseminated Lyme disease? Study Design: Systematic review of three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in peer reviewed journals between 2010-2014, all English language. Data Sources: The three randomized controlled trials were found using PubMed. Outcomes Measured: Two of the studies measured quality of life using RAND-36 Health Status Inventory. The third study measured patients’ symptoms using a visual analogue scale. Results: All three studies found no significant change in the quality of life or in patients’ symptoms when comparing extended antibiotic courses to placebo when treating persistent disseminated Lyme. Two studies had relatively low numbers needed to harm when looking at adverse events. Conclusions: Based on the information provided by these three RCTs, it can be concluded that long-term antibiotic treatments are not safe or effective in treating patients 16 and older with disseminated Lyme disease. Both antibiotic treatments studied had adverse events and increasing duration did not improve quality of life or reduce symptoms any more than the placeb

    The Impact of a Science Field Camp Experience on Students\u27 Learning of Environmental Concepts

    Environmental education has garnered progressively more attention in recent years as global concerns of climate issues and conservation become increasingly prevalent. Educating young students is essential to developing a generation of stewards that are knowledgeable of their environmental impact and motivated to incite positive change in their surroundings. Using a mixed-methods study, a quantitative and qualitative analysis was conducted to evaluate the Creek Critters class as part of the residential program at the Ozark Natural Science Center. Students attending the program were given pre-and post-assessments that evaluated their knowledge of the concepts of water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates discussed at the residential program. Assessments were “scored” based on their accuracy in addressing questions and demonstrating knowledge of environmental concepts. In addition, parent and teacher chaperones were interviewed to assess the perceived objectives and impacts as well as the efficacy of the residential program in educating students in matters of environmental science and conservation. Interviews were transcribed and responses were recorded. Evaluation of the post-assessments demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in overall scores; however, a significantly positive increase was recorded in the scores pertaining to water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates, the focus of the Creek Critters class. The interviews established that the chaperones’ main expectation for the residential program lies in promoting stewardship rather than educating for content. Additionally, chaperones believe that the residential program is fully meeting their expectations. It is recommended that the wording of the assessments be re-evaluated to ensure clarity in prompts and that the method in which assessments are administered by the Ozark Natural Science Center be made more uniform. A larger sample size for chaperone testimony is recommended and further research is encouraged
