Discrimination, Coping, and Depression among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men
Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) have elevated risk for depression compared to the general population. BMSM’s capacity to cope with these experiences is not well understood. Increased understanding of how multiple forms of discrimination contribute to depression and how BMSM cope with discrimination can better inform interventions. Data come from 3,510 BMSM who attended Black Pride events in six U.S. cities from 2015-2017. Participants completed a health survey that ascertained their psychosocial health and resiliency profiles. Using multivariable logistic regression models, we tested the associations between type-specific discrimination (race, sexuality, HIV status) and depression. We then conducted sub-analyses to determine if coping attenuated the association between type-specific discrimination and depression. Our findings indicated that increased odds of depression among BMSM were associated with discrimination based on race (aOR=1.38, 95% CI = 1.08-1.76), sexual orientation (aOR=1.32, 95% CI = 1.01-1.72), and HIV status (aOR=1.53, 95% CI = 1.08-2.17). Sub-analyses indicated coping had inconsistent moderation effects between type-specific discrimination and depression. Our findings demonstrate that impact of various forms of discrimination on BMSM’s mental health and the mitigating role of coping. Interventions should seek to address depression by reducing experiences of discrimination and building coping resiliency
Reconciling Epidemiology and Social Justice in the Public Health Discourse Around the Sexual Networks of Black Men Who Have Sex With Men
Several studies have implicated the sexual networks of Black men who have sex with men (MSM) as facilitating disproportionally high rates of new HIV infections within this community. Although structural disparities place these networks at heightened risk for infection, HIV prevention science continues to describe networks as the cause for HIV disparities, rather than an effect of structures that pattern infection. We explore the historical relationship between public health and Black MSM, arguing that the current articulation of Black MSM networks is too often incomplete and counterproductive. Public health can offer a counternarrative that reconciles epidemiology with the social justice that informs our discipline, and that is required for an effective response to the epidemic among Black MSM
First results from a VLBA proper motion survey of H2O masers in low-mass YSOs: the Serpens core and RNO15-FIR
This article reports first results of a long-term observational program aimed
to study the earliest evolution of jet/disk systems in low-mass YSOs by means
of VLBI observations of the 22.2 GHz water masers. We report here data for the
cluster of low-mass YSOs in the Serpens molecular core and for the single
object RNO~15-FIR. Towards Serpens SMM1, the most luminous sub-mm source of the
Serpens cluster, the water maser emission comes from two small (< 5 AU in size)
clusters of features separated by ~25 AU, having line of sight velocities
strongly red-shifted (by more than 10 km/s) with respect to the LSR velocity of
the molecular cloud. The two maser clusters are oriented on the sky along a
direction that is approximately perpendicular to the axis of the radio
continuum jet observed with the VLA towards SMM1. The spatial and velocity
distribution of the maser features lead us to favor the interpretation that the
maser emission is excited by interaction of the receding lobe of the jet with
dense gas in the accretion disk surrounding the YSO in SMM1. Towards
RNO~15-FIR, the few detected maser features have both positions and (absolute)
velocities aligned along a direction that is parallel to the axis of the
molecular outflow observed on much larger angular scales. In this case the
maser emission likely emerges from dense, shocked molecular clumps displaced
along the axis of the jet emerging from the YSO. The protostar in Serpens SMM1
is more massive than the one in RNO~15-FIR. We discuss the case where a high
mass ejection rate can generate jets sufficiently powerful to sweep away from
their course the densest portions of circumstellar gas. In this case, the
excitation conditions for water masers might preferably occur at the interface
between the jet and the accretion disk, rather than along the jet axis.Comment: 18 pages (postscript format); 9 figures; to be published into

Registered psychiatric service use, self-harm and suicides of children and young people aged 0-24 before and during the COVID-19 pandemic : a systematic review
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on psychiatric symptoms of children and young people, but many psychiatric services have been disrupted. It is unclear how service use, self-harm and suicide has changed since the pandemic started. To gain timely information, this systematic review focused on studies based on administrative data that compared psychiatric service use, self-harm and suicide before and during the pandemic among children and young people. Methods and finding A systematic review of studies published in English from 1 January 2020 to 22 March 2021 was conducted, using the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase and PsycINFO databases. Increases or reductions in service use were calculated and compared using percentages. Of the 2,676 papers retrieved, 18 were eligible for the review and they provided data from 19 countries and regions. Most studies assessed changes during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, from March to July 2020, and three assessed the changes until October 2020. Fifteen studies reported a total of 21 service use outcomes that were quantitively examined. More than three-quarters of the 21 outcomes (81%) fell by 5-80% (mean reduction = 27.9%, SD = 35%). Ten of the 20 outcomes for psychiatric emergency department (ED) services reduced by 5% to 80% (mean = 40.1%, SD = 34.9%) during the pandemic. Reductions in service use were also recorded for ED visits due to suicide ideation and self-harm, referrals to secondary mental health services, psychiatric inpatient unit admissions and patients receiving treatment for eating disorders. However, there were also some increases. Suicide rate and the number of ED visits due to suicide attempts have increased, and there was an increase in the number of treatment sessions in a service that provided telemedicine. Conclusion Most of the studies showed reductions in the use of psychiatric services by children and young people during the early phase of the pandemic and this highlighted potential delays or unmet needs. Suicide rate has increased during the second wave of the pandemic. Further studies are needed to assess the pattern of service use in the later phases of the COVID-19 pandemic.Peer reviewe
Identification of pre-leukaemic haematopoietic stem cells in acute leukaemia.
In acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), the cell of origin, nature and biological consequences of initiating lesions, and order of subsequent mutations remain poorly understood, as AML is typically diagnosed without observation of a pre-leukaemic phase. Here, highly purified haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), progenitor and mature cell fractions from the blood of AML patients were found to contain recurrent DNMT3A mutations (DNMT3A(mut)) at high allele frequency, but without coincident NPM1 mutations (NPM1c) present in AML blasts. DNMT3A(mut)-bearing HSCs showed a multilineage repopulation advantage over non-mutated HSCs in xenografts, establishing their identity as pre-leukaemic HSCs. Pre-leukaemic HSCs were found in remission samples, indicating that they survive chemotherapy. Therefore DNMT3A(mut) arises early in AML evolution, probably in HSCs, leading to a clonally expanded pool of pre-leukaemic HSCs from which AML evolves. Our findings provide a paradigm for the detection and treatment of pre-leukaemic clones before the acquisition of additional genetic lesions engenders greater therapeutic resistance

Targeted prevention of common mental health disorders in university students: randomised controlled trial of a transdiagnostic trait-focused web-based intervention
Background:
A large proportion of university students show symptoms of common mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and eating disorders. Novel interventions are required that target underlying factors of multiple disorders.<p></p>
Aims:
To evaluate the efficacy of a transdiagnostic trait-focused web-based intervention aimed at reducing symptoms of common mental disorders in university students.<p></p>
Method:
Students were recruited online (n = 1047, age: M = 21.8, SD = 4.2) and categorised into being at high or low risk for mental disorders based on their personality traits. Participants were allocated to a cognitive-behavioural trait-focused (n = 519) or a control intervention (n = 528) using computerised simple randomisation. Both interventions were fully automated and delivered online (trial registration: ISRCTN14342225). Participants were blinded and outcomes were self-assessed at baseline, at 6 weeks and at 12 weeks after registration. Primary outcomes were current depression and anxiety, assessed on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD7). Secondary outcome measures focused on alcohol use, disordered eating, and other outcomes.<p></p>
Results:
Students at high risk were successfully identified using personality indicators and reported poorer mental health. A total of 520 students completed the 6-week follow-up and 401 students completed the 12-week follow-up. Attrition was high across intervention groups, but comparable to other web-based interventions. Mixed effects analyses revealed that at 12-week follow up the trait-focused intervention reduced depression scores by 3.58 (p<.001, 95%CI [5.19, 1.98]) and anxiety scores by 2.87 (p = .018, 95%CI [1.31, 4.43]) in students at high risk. In high-risk students, between group effect sizes were 0.58 (depression) and 0.42 (anxiety). In addition, self-esteem was improved. No changes were observed regarding the use of alcohol or disordered eating.<p></p>
Conclusions
This study suggests that a transdiagnostic web-based intervention for university students targeting underlying personality risk factors may be a promising way of preventing common mental disorders with a low-intensity intervention
SU(2) Landau gluon propagator on a 140^3 lattice
We present a numerical study of the gluon propagator in lattice Landau gauge
for three-dimensional pure-SU(2) lattice gauge theory at couplings beta = 4.2,
5.0, 6.0 and for lattice volumes V = 40^3, 80^3, 140^3. In the limit of large V
we observe a decreasing gluon propagator for momenta smaller than p_{dec} =
350^{+ 100}_{- 50} MeV. Data are well fitted by Gribov-like formulae and seem
to indicate an infra-red critical exponent kappa slightly above 0.6, in

For Better or for Worse? A Systematic Review of the Evidence on Social Media Use and Depression Among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Minorities
Background: Over 90% of adults in the United States have at least one social media account, and lesbian, gay, and bisexual
(LGB) persons are more socially active on social media than heterosexuals. Rates of depression among LGB persons are between
1.5- and 2-fold higher than those among their heterosexual counterparts. Social media allows users to connect, interact, and
express ideas, emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Thus, social media use might represent both a protective and a risk factor for
depression among LGB persons. Studying the nature of the relationship between social media use and depression among LGB
individuals is a necessary step to inform public health interventions for this population.
Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize and critique the evidence on social media use and depression
among LGB populations.
Methods: We conducted a literature search for quantitative and qualitative studies published between January 2003 and June
2017 using 3 electronic databases. Articles were included if they were peer-reviewed, were in English, assessed social media use
either quantitatively or qualitatively, measured depression, and focused on LGB populations. A minimum of two authors
independently extracted data from each study using an a priori developed abstraction form. We assessed appropriate reporting of
studies using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology and the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting
Qualitative Research for quantitative and qualitative studies, respectively.
Results: We included 11 articles in the review; 9 studies were quantitative and cross-sectional and 2 were qualitative. Appropriate
reporting of results varied greatly. Across quantitative studies, we found heterogeneity in how social media use was defined and
measured. Cyberbullying was the most studied social media experience and was associated with depression and suicidality.
Qualitative studies found that while social media provides a space to disclose minority experiences and share ways to cope and
get support, constant surveillance of one’s social media profile can become a stressor, potentially leading to depression. In most
studies, sexual minority participants were identified inconsistently.
Conclusions: This review supports the need for research on the role of social media use on depression outcomes among LBG
persons. Using social media may be both a protective and a risk factor for depression among LGB individuals. Support gained
via social media may buffer the impact of geographic isolation and loneliness. Negative experiences such as cyberbullying and
other patterns of use may be associated with depression. Future research would benefit from more consistent definitions of both
social media use and study populations. Moreover, use of larger samples and accounting for patterns of use and individuals’
experiences on social media may help better understand the factors that impact LGB mental health disparities
Spina bifida-predisposing heterozygous mutations in Planar Cell Polarity genes and Zic2 reduce bone mass in young mice
Fractures are a common comorbidity in children with the neural tube defect (NTD) spina bifida. Mutations in the Wnt/planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway contribute to NTDs in humans and mice, but whether this pathway independently determines bone mass is poorly understood. Here, we first confirmed that core Wnt/PCP components are expressed in osteoblasts and osteoclasts in vitro. In vivo, we performed detailed µCT comparisons of bone structure in tibiae from young male mice heterozygous for NTD-associated mutations versus WT littermates. PCP signalling disruption caused by Vangl2 (Vangl2Lp/+) or Celsr1 (Celsr1Crsh/+) mutations significantly reduced trabecular bone mass and distal tibial cortical thickness. NTD-associated mutations in non-PCP transcription factors were also investigated. Pax3 mutation (Pax3Sp2H/+) had minimal effects on bone mass. Zic2 mutation (Zic2Ku/+) significantly altered the position of the tibia/fibula junction and diminished cortical bone in the proximal tibia. Beyond these genes, we bioinformatically documented the known extent of shared genetic networks between NTDs and bone properties. 46 genes involved in neural tube closure are annotated with bone-related ontologies. These findings document shared genetic networks between spina bifida risk and bone structure, including PCP components and Zic2. Genetic variants which predispose to spina bifida may therefore independently diminish bone mass
