Progress in diverticular diseases of the colon
Segmentation is an important factor in the influence of diverticular disease on colon motility. Psychosomatic factors must be taken into account, and surgery has also contributed to our understanding of diverticular disease. It is important to evaluate the place of surgical intervention in this condition
Multiinstantons in curvilinear coordinates
The 'tHooft's 5N-parametric multiinstanton solution is generalized to
curvilinear coordinates. Expressions can be simplified by a gauge
transformation that makes -symbols constant in the vierbein formalism.
This generates the compensating addition to the gauge potential of
pseudoparticles. Typical examples (4-spherical, 2+2- and 3+1-cylindrical
coordinates) are studied and explicit formulae presented for reference.
Singularities of the compensating field are discussed. They are irrelevant for
physics but affect gauge dependent quantities.Comment: LaTeX file, 17 page
Effective action for scalar fields and generalised zeta-function regularisation
Motivated by the study of quantum fields in a Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW)
spacetime, the one-loop effective action for a scalar field defined in the
ultrastatic manifold , being the finite
volume, non-compact, hyperbolic spatial section, is investigated by a
generalisation of zeta-function regularisation. It is shown that additional
divergences may appear at one-loop level. The one-loop renormalisability of the
model is discussed and making use of a generalisation of zeta-function
regularisation, the one-loop renormalisation group equations are derived.Comment: Latex, 16 pages, no figures; Latex mistakes corrected; accepted for

Addressing Health Literacy for Improved Outcomes: A Focus on Pregnancy
Health literacy influences how messages are received and understood by patient or population groups. In Europe, incomprehension of health information is common, affecting the ability of many individuals to make informed decisions about their health. In addition, incomprehension of health information may impact the effectiveness of interventions and subsequently, health outcomes. In this article, we illustrate the importance of health literacy in the context of maternity services, a time during which, health interventions affect both maternal and child health. Through this, we suggest that health literacy should be recognised in healthcare settings as a tool to facilitate behaviour change. To support this, we provide practical recommendations for clinicians and researchers on how to address aspects of health literacy in their practice

Wireless adiabatic power transfer
We propose a technique for efficient mid-range wireless power transfer
between two coils, by adapting the process of adiabatic passage for a
coherently driven two-state quantum system to the realm of wireless energy
transfer. The proposed technique is shown to be robust to noise, resonant
constraints, and other interferences that exist in the neighborhood of the
coils.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Towards an all-integrated MOPA configuration using Yb-doped ion-exchanged waveguides
In this paper, we present an ion-exchanged Yb-glass waveguide amplifier, seeded by an ion-exchanged Yb-glass waveguide laser demonstrating a gain as high as 10 dB. We also present multi-GHz, mode-locked ion-exchanged waveguide lasers and discuss the development of a fully integrated high-power, multi-GHz waveguide sourc
Finite gravitational action for higher derivative and stringy gravities
We generalize the local surface counterterm prescription suggested in
Einstein gravity for higher derivative (HD) and Weyl gravities. Explicitly, the
surface counterterm is found for three- and five-dimensional HD gravities. As a
result, the gravitational action for asymptotically AdS spaces is finite and
gravitational energy-momentum tensor is well-defined. The holographic trace
anomaly for d2 and d4 boundary (gauge) QFT dual to above HD gravity is
calculated from gravitational energy-momentum tensor. The calculation of AdS
black hole mass in HD gravity is presented within above prescrition. The
comparison with the standard prescription (using reference spacetime) is done.Comment: LaTeX file, 21 page
A New Model for Void Coalescence by Internal Necking
A micromechanical model for predicting the strain increment required to bring a damaged material element from the onset of void coalescence up to final fracture is developed based on simple kinematics arguments. This strain increment controls the unloading slope and the energy dissipated during the final step of material failure. Proper prediction of the final drop of the load carrying capacity is an important ingredient of any ductile fracture model, especially at high stress triaxiality. The model has been motivated and verified by comparison to a large set of finite element void cell calculations.
