    Bayesian spatial analysis of a national urinary schistosomiasis questionnaire to assist geographic targeting of schistosomiasis control in Tanzania, East Africa.

    Spatial modelling was applied to self-reported schistosomiasis data from over 2.5 million school students from 12,399 schools in all regions of mainland Tanzania. The aims were to derive statistically robust prevalence estimates in small geographical units (wards), to identify spatial clusters of high and low prevalence and to quantify uncertainty surrounding prevalence estimates. The objective was to permit informed decision-making for targeting of resources by the Tanzanian national schistosomiasis control programme. Bayesian logistic regression models were constructed to investigate the risk of schistosomiasis in each ward, based on the prevalence of self-reported schistosomiasis and blood in urine. Models contained covariates representing climatic and demographic effects and random effects for spatial clustering. Degree of urbanisation, median elevation of the ward and median normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) were significantly and negatively associated with schistosomiasis prevalence. Most regions contained wards that had >95% certainty of schistosomiasis prevalence being >10%, the selected threshold for bi-annual mass chemotherapy of school-age children. Wards with >95% certainty of schistosomiasis prevalence being >30%, the selected threshold for annual mass chemotherapy of school-age children, were clustered in north-western, south-western and south-eastern regions. Large sample sizes in most wards meant raw prevalence estimates were robust. However, when uncertainties were investigated, intervention status was equivocal in 6.7-13.0% of wards depending on the criterion used. The resulting maps are being used to plan the distribution of praziquantel to participating districts; they will be applied to prioritising control in those wards where prevalence was unequivocally above thresholds for intervention and might direct decision-makers to obtain more information in wards where intervention status was uncertain

    Constraining neutron star tidal Love numbers with gravitational wave detectors

    Ground-based gravitational wave detectors may be able to constrain the nuclear equation of state using the early, low frequency portion of the signal of detected neutron star - neutron star inspirals. In this early adiabatic regime, the influence of a neutron star's internal structure on the phase of the waveform depends only on a single parameter lambda of the star related to its tidal Love number, namely the ratio of the induced quadrupole moment to the perturbing tidal gravitational field. We analyze the information obtainable from gravitational wave frequencies smaller than a cutoff frequency of 400 Hz, where corrections to the internal-structure signal are less than 10 percent. For an inspiral of two non-spinning 1.4 solar mass neutron stars at a distance of 50 Mpc, LIGO II detectors will be able to constrain lambda to lambda < 2.0 10^{37} g cm^2 s^2 with 90% confidence. Fully relativistic stellar models show that the corresponding constraint on radius R for 1.4 solar mass neutron stars would be R < 13.6 km (15.3 km) for a n=0.5 (n=1.0) polytrope.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, minor correction

    Tidal deformability of neutron stars with realistic equations of state and their gravitational wave signatures in binary inspiral

    The early part of the gravitational wave signal of binary neutron star inspirals can potentially yield robust information on the nuclear equation of state. The influence of a star's internal structure on the waveform is characterized by a single parameter: the tidal deformability lambda, which measures the star's quadrupole deformation in response to the companion's perturbing tidal field. We calculate lambda for a wide range of equations of state and find that the value of lambda spans an order of magnitude for the range of equation of state models considered. An analysis of the feasibility of discriminating between neutron star equations of state with gravitational wave observations of the early part of the inspiral reveals that the measurement error in lambda increases steeply with the total mass of the binary. Comparing the errors with the expected range of lambda, we find that Advanced LIGO observations of binaries at a distance of 100 Mpc will probe only unusually stiff equations of state, while the proposed Einstein Telescope is likely to see a clean tidal signature.Comment: 12 pages, submitted to PR

    This paper is an account of our attempts to understand preschool children's experiences with information and communication technologies (ICT) at home. Using case study data, we focus on what we can learn from talking directly to the children that might otherwise have been overlooked and on describing and evaluating the methods we adopted to ensure that we maximised the children's contributions to the research. By paying attention to the children's perspectives we have learned that they are discriminating users of ICT who evaluate their own performances, know what gives them pleasure and who differentiate between operational competence and the substantive activities made possible by ICT

    Low-Temperature Spin Diffusion in a Spin-Polarized Fermi Gas

    We present a finite temperature calculation of the transverse spin-diffusion coefficient, D⊄D_\bot, in a dilute degenerate Fermi gas in the presence of a small external magnetic field, HH. While the longitudinal diffusion coefficient displays the conventional low-temperature Fermi-liquid behavior, D∄∝T−2D_\parallel \propto T^{-2}, the corresponding results for D⊄D_\bot show three separate regimes: (a) D⊄∌H−2D_\bot \sim H^{-2} for Tâ‰ȘHT \ll H; (b) D⊄∌T−2D_\bot \sim T^{-2}, D⊄/D∄≠1D_\bot /D_\parallel \neq 1 for T≫HT \gg H and large spin-rotation parameter Ο≫1\xi \gg 1, and (c) D⊄=D∄∝T−2D_\bot = D_\parallel \propto T^{-2} for T≫HT \gg H and Οâ‰Ș1\xi \ll 1. Our results are qualitatively consistent with the available experimental data in weakly spin-polarized 3He^3{\rm He} and 3He−4He^3{\rm He} - ^4{\rm He} mixtures.Comment: 13 pages, REVTEX, 3 figures available upon request, RU-94-4

    Lightweighting Impacts on Fuel Economy, Cost, and Component Losses

    The Future Automotive Systems Technology Simulator (FASTSim) is the U.S. Department of Energy's high-level vehicle powertrain model developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It uses a time versus speed drive cycle to estimate the powertrain forces required to meet the cycle. It simulates the major vehicle powertrain components and their losses. It includes a cost model based on component sizing and fuel prices. FASTSim simulated different levels of lightweighting for four different powertrains: a conventional gasoline engine vehicle, a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and a battery electric vehicle (EV). Weight reductions impacted the conventional vehicle's efficiency more than the HEV, PHEV and EV. Although lightweighting impacted the advanced vehicles' efficiency less, it reduced component cost and overall costs more. The PHEV and EV are less cost effective than the conventional vehicle and HEV using current battery costs. Assuming the DOE's battery cost target of 100/kWh,however,thePHEVattainedsimilarcostandlightweightingbenefits.Generally,lightweightingwascosteffectivewhenitcostslessthan100/kWh, however, the PHEV attained similar cost and lightweighting benefits.     Can health trainers make a difference with difficult-to-engage clients? A multisite case study

    A political attempt in the United Kingdom to address health inequalities in the past decade has been the government’s initiative to employ local health trainers (HTs) or health trainer champions (HTCs) to support disadvantaged individuals with aspects of their health-related behaviors. HT/HTCs provide health-related information and support to individuals with healthy eating, physical activity, and smoking cessation. They undertake community engagement and direct individuals to relevant health services. They differ in that HTs are trained to provide health interventions to individuals or groups and to make referrals to specialist health care services when necessary. This article provides an evaluation of HT/HTCs interventions across three sites, including one prison, one probation service (three teams), and one mental health center. An evaluation framework combining process and outcome measures was employed that used mixed methods to capture data relating to the implementation of the service, including the context of the HT/HTCs interventions, the reactions of their clients, and the outcomes reported. It was found that HT/HTCs interventions were more effective in the prison and mental health center compared with the probation site largely as a result of contextual factors

    Assessing the Battery Cost at Which Plug-in Hybrid Medium-Duty Parcel Delivery Vehicles Become Cost-Effective

    The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) validated diesel-conventional and diesel-hybrid medium-duty parcel delivery vehicle models to evaluate petroleum reductions and cost implications of hybrid and plug-in hybrid diesel variants. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants are run on a field data-derived design matrix to analyze the effect of drive cycle, distance, engine downsizing, battery replacements, and battery energy on fuel consumption and lifetime cost. For an array of diesel fuel costs, the battery cost per kilowatt-hour at which the hybridized configuration becomes cost-effective is calculated. This builds on a previous analysis that found the fuel savings from medium duty plug-in hybrids more than offset the vehicles' incremental price under future battery and fuel cost projections, but that they seldom did so under present day cost assumptions in the absence of purchase incentives. The results also highlight the importance of understanding the application's drive cycle specific daily distance and kinetic intensity

    We develop a general theory of Fermi liquids to discuss the Kadowaki-Woods relation A∝γ2A\propto \gamma^2. We derive a formula for the ratio A/Îł2A/\gamma^2 which is expressed as a product of two dimensionless parameters α\alpha and FF, where α\alpha represents a coupling constant for quasiparticle scattering and FF is a geometric factor determined by the shape of the Fermi surface. Then we argue that the universal ratio observed in heavy fermion compounds is reproduced under the conditions α∌1\alpha\sim 1 and F∌20F\sim 20. The former is regarded as a universality of Fermi liquids in a strong coupling regime, and the latter is corroborated by evaluating FF definitely in simple cases. It is noted that the proportional relation is just an example of the universal phenomena to be expected for the whole class of strong coupling Fermi liquids.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures; J. Phys.
