Erhöhung der ZuverlĂ€ssigkeit der Bestimmung der Neutronenbelastung von WWER-Reaktorkomponenten zwecks Ableitung von VorschlĂ€gen fĂŒr eine sicherere BetriebsfĂŒhrung von WWER-Reaktoren
The results of a project sponsored by the German Bundesministerium fuer Bildung, Wissenschaft, Forschung und Technologie are presented. The Project aimed to improve the safety against embrittlement of VVER-1000 type reactors by a more reliable and accurate determination of the neutron load of reactor pressure vessels. Therefore, six scientist from three Russian research institutions were sponsored to support with their work another BMBF project of the FZR aimed at the same goal. By providing reliable data for the evaluation of ex-vessel neutron activation experiments at two VVER-1000 and formulating the corresponding reactor models a basis has been established for further investigations as well in the FZR as well as in several Russian and Western research institutions. The leading Russian nuclear data library ABBN/MULTIC has been improved and tested. The uncertainties affecting the calculations of the fluence spectrum at the outer boundary of the pressure vessel have been analysed and a spectrum covariance matrix has been derived. The methodologies for the experimental determination of activation rates and for calculations of fluence spectra and activation rates have been further developed and tested by interlaboratoy comparisons. Measurements of different laboratories were compared with each other, as well as the corresponding calculations. Moreover, measurements and calculations were compared against each other, partly with participation of further Russian, Czech and Western institutes. The results of the Intercomparisons have been evaluated by the "International Workshop on the Balakovo-3 Interlaboratory Dosimetry Experiment" in September 1997 in Rossendorf. As a result of these works a better evaluation of the reached accuracies was possible and proposals for an improvement of the used methods could be derived
Validation of the Baveno Vi Criteria to Identify Low Risk Cirrhotic Patients not Requiring Endoscopic Surveillance for Varices
BACKGROUND: The Baveno VI guidelines propose that cirrhotic patients with a liver stiffness measurement (LSM) 150000/ÎŒL can avoid screening endoscopy as their combination is highly specific for excluding clinically significant varices. The aim of the study was to validate these criteria. METHODS: Transient elastography data was collected from two institutions from 2006-2015. Inclusion criteria were a LSM â©Ÿ10kPa and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy within 12 months, with a diagnosis of compensated chronic liver disease. Exclusion criteria were porto-mesenteric-splenic vein thrombosis and non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. Varices were graded as low risk (grade 150) are at low risk of having varices and do not need a screening endoscopy. Varices are a complication of cirrhosis, confer a risk of serious bleeding, and can be diagnosed and treated by endoscopy. Our study reviewed the clinical records of patients who have had liver stiffness scans and endoscopy over a 9 year period at two hospitals. The results show that only about 2% of patients who meet the Baveno VI criteria will be miss classified as not having varices
Evaluating motor cortical oscillations and age-related change in autism spectrum disorder
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is primarily characterized by impairments in social communication and the appearance of repetitive behaviors with restricted interests. Increasingly, evidence also points to a general deficit of motor tone and coordination in children and adults with ASD; yet the neural basis of motor functional impairment in ASD remains poorly characterized. In this study we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to (1) assess potential group differences between typically developing (TD) and ASD participants in motor cortical oscillatory activity observed on a simple button-press task and (2) to do so over a sufficiently broad age-range so as to capture age-dependent changes associated with development. Event-related desynchronization was evaluated in Mu (8-13âŻHz) and Beta (15-30âŻHz) frequency bands (Mu-ERD, Beta-ERD). In addition, post-movement Beta rebound (PMBR), and movement-related gamma (60-90âŻHz) synchrony (MRGS) were also assessed in a cohort of 123 participants (63 typically developing (TD) and 59 with ASD) ranging in age from 8 to 24.9 years. We observed significant age-dependent linear trends in Beta-ERD and MRGS power with age for both TD and ASD groups; which did not differ significantly between groups. However, for PMBR, in addition to a significant effect of age, we also observed a significant reduction in PMBR power in the ASD group (pâŻ13.2 years (pâŻ<âŻ0.001) and this group difference was not observed when assessing PMBR activity for the younger PMBR groups (ages 8-13.2 years; pâŻ=âŻ0.48). Moreover, for the older ASD cohort, hierarchical regression showed a significant relationship between PMBR activity and clinical scores of ASD severity (SRS-T scores), after regressing out the effect of age (pâŻ<âŻ0.05). Our results show substantial age-dependent changes in motor cortical oscillations (Beta-ERD and MRGS) occur for both TD and ASD children and diverge only for PMBR, and most significantly for older adolescents and adults with ASD. While the functional significance of PMBR and reduced PMBR signaling remains to be fully elucidated, these results underscore the importance of considering age as a factor when assessing motor cortical oscillations and group differences in children with ASD
Investigating the health implications of social policy initiatives at the local level: study design and methods
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In this paper we present the research design and methods of a study that seeks to capture local level responses to an Australian national social policy initiative, aimed at reducing inequalities in the social determinants of health.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The study takes a policy-to-practice approach and combines policy and stakeholder interviewing with a comparative case study analysis of two not-for-profit organisations involved in the delivery of federal government policy.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Before the health impacts of broad-scale policies, such as the one described in this study, can be assessed at the population level, we need to understand the implementation process. This is consistent with current thinking in political science and social policy, which has emphasised the importance of investigating how, and if, policies are translated into operational realities.</p
Sport and British Jewish identity
This article examines the relationship between sport and Jewish identity. The experiences of Jewish people have rarely been considered in previous sport-related research which has typically focused on âBlackâ and South Asian individuals, sports clubs, and organisations. Drawing on data generated from interviews ( n = 20) and focus groups ( n = 2) with individuals based in one British city, this article explores how their Jewish identity was informed, and shaped by, different sports activities and spaces. This studyâs participants were quick to correct the idea that sport was alien to Jewish culture and did not accept the stereotype that âJews donât play sportâ. The limited historical research on sport and Jewish people and the ongoing debates around Jewish identity are noted before exploring the role of religion and the suggestion that Jewish participation in sport is affected by the Shabbat (sabbath). Participants discussed how sports clubs acted as spaces for the expression and re/affirmation of their Jewish identity, before they reflected on the threats posed to the wider Jewish community by secularism, assimilation, and antisemitism. The article concludes by discussing how the sporting experiences of the studyâs British Jewish participants compare with the experiences of individuals from other ethnic minority communities
Buffy the vampire slayer: what being Jewish has to do with it
This article examines the whiteness in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The author argues that the showâs overwhelming whiteness is a product of a generalized white anxiety about the numerical loss of white dominance across the United States and, in particular, in California. The article goes on to think through the role that Jewishness plays in the program, discussing the relationship between the apparently Anglo-American Buffy, played by a Jewish actor, and her sidekick, Willow, who is characterized as Jewish but is played by a non-Jewish actor. The evil master in the first series is given Nazi characteristics and the destruction that he wants to inflict carries connotations of the Holocaust. Structurally, Buffy is produced as the Jew who saves the United States from this demonic destruction. In this traumatic renarrativising, the Holocaust comes to stand for the white-experienced crisis of the loss of white supremacy in the United States. With this reading we can begin to understand the showâs popularity among early adult, predominantly white Americans
A cartilage tissue engineering approach combining starch-polycaprolactone fibre mesh scaffolds with bovine articular chondrocytes
In the present work we originally tested the suitability
of corn starch-polycaprolactone (SPCL) scaffolds for
pursuing a cartilage tissue engineering approach. Bovine articular
chondrocytes were seeded on SPCL scaffolds under
dynamic conditions using spinner flasks (total of 4 scaffolds
per spinner flask using cell suspensions of 0.5Ă106 cells/ml)
and cultured under orbital agitation for a total of 6 weeks.
Poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) non-woven scaffolds and bovine
native articular cartilage were used as standard controls for
the conducted experiments. PGA is a kind of standard in
tissue engineering approaches and it was used as a control
in that sense. The tissue engineered constructs were characterized
at different time periods by scanning electron microscopy
(SEM), hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) and toluidine
blue stainings, immunolocalisation of collagen types I and II,
and dimethylmethylene blue (DMB) assay for glycosaminoglycans
(GAG) quantification assay. SEM results for SPCL
constructs showed that the chondrocytes presented normal
morphological features, with extensive cells presence at the
surface of the support structures, and penetrating the scaffolds
pores. These observations were further corroborated
by H&E staining. Toluidine blue and immunohistochemistry
exhibited extracellular matrix deposition throughout the 3D structure. Glycosaminoglycans, and collagen types I and II
were detected. However, stronger staining for collagen type
II was observed when compared to collagen type I. The PGA
constructs presented similar features toSPCLat the end of the
6 weeks. PGA constructs exhibited higher amounts of matrix
glycosaminoglycans when compared to the SPCL scaffolds.
However, we also observed a lack of tissue in the central
area of the PGA scaffolds. Reasons for these occurrences
may include inefficient cells penetration, necrosis due to high
cell densities, or necrosis related with acidic by-products
degradation. Such situation was not detected in the SPCL
scaffolds, indicating the much better biocompatibility of the
starch based scaffolds
