Dimensional renormalization: ladders to rainbows
Renormalization factors are most easily extracted by going to the massless
limit of the quantum field theory and retaining only a single momentum scale.
We derive factors and renormalized Green functions to all orders in
perturbation theory for rainbow graphs and vertex (or scattering diagrams) at
zero momentum transfer, in the context of dimensional renormalization, and we
prove that the correct anomalous dimensions for those processes emerge in the

Review of a Small-scale Pelagic Longline Fishery off Northeastern Brazil
The annual catches of four small longliners operating off northeast Brazil from 1983 to 1997 were examined across different areas and locations. The total catch comprised tunas (30%), sharks (54%), billfishes (12%), and other fish species (4%). Fishing strategy and annual composition of catches showed large spatial and temporal variabilities with the dominant catches alternating among yellowfin tuna,
Thunnus albacares; gray sharks, Carcharhinus spp.; and blue shark, Prionace glauca. Catches of blue and gray sharks
showed a significant interaction among seamounts, with gray sharks occurring in maximum abundance around those seamounts
that had relatively deep summits and low-sloping depth profiles. Results are discussed in terms of the various factors that may have influenced distribution of effort
BIMA and Keck Imaging of the Radio Ring PKS 1830-211
We discuss BIMA (Berkeley Illinois Maryland Association) data and present new
high quality optical and near-IR Keck images of the bright radio ring PKS
1830-211. Applying a powerful new deconvolution algorithm we have been able to
identify both images of the radio source. In addition we recover an extended
source in the optical, consistent with the expected location of the lensing
galaxy. The source counterparts are very red, I-K=7, suggesting strong Galactic
absorption with additional absorption by the lensing galaxy at z=0.885, and

Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the CFRS and LDSS redshift surveys - IV. Influence of mergers in the evolution of faint field galaxies from z~1
HST images of a sample of 285 galaxies with measured z from the CFRS and
Autofib-LDSS redshift surveys are analysed to derive the evolution of the
merger fraction out to z~1. We have performed visual and machine-based merger
identifications, as well as counts of bright pairs of galaxies with magnitude
differences less than 1.5 mag. We find that the pair fraction increases with z,
with up to ~20% of the galaxies being in physical pairs at z~0.75-1. We derive
a merger fraction varying with z as (1+z)^{3.2 +/- 0.6}, after correction for
line-of-sight contamination, in excellent agreement with the merger fraction
derived from the visual classification of mergers for which m = 3.4 +/- 0.6.
After correcting for seeing effects on the ground-based selection of survey
galaxies, we conclude that the pair fraction evolves as (1+z)^{2.7 +/- 0.6}.
This implies that an average L* galaxy will have undergone 0.8 to 1.8 merger
events from z=1 to 0, with 0.5 to 1.2 merger events occuring in a 2 Gyr time
span at z~0.9. This result is consistent with predictions from semi-analytical
models of galaxy formation. From the simple co-addition of the observed
luminosities of the galaxies in pairs, physical mergers are computed to lead to
a brightening of 0.5 mag for each pair on average, and a boost in star
formation rate of a factor of 2, as derived from the average [O II] equivalent
widths. Mergers of galaxies are therefore contributing significantly to the
evolution of both the luminosity function and luminosity density of the

Renormalization-Scale Invariance, Minimal Sensitivity, and the Inclusive Hadronic Decays of a 115 GeV Higgs Particle
Known perturbative expressions for the decay rates of 115 GeV Higgs particle
into either two gluons or a pair are shown to exhibit
renormalization-scale-()-dependence that is largely removed via
renormalization-group/Pade-approximant estimates of these rates' next order
contributions. The extrema in characterizing both rates, as determined
from fully-known orders of perturbation theory, are very nearly equal to
corresponding -insensitive rates obtained via estimation of their next

Semileptonic D decay into scalar mesons: a QCD sum rule approach
Semileptonic decays of D-mesons into scalar hadronic states are investigated.
Two extreme cases are considered: a) the meson decays directly into an
uncorrelated scalar state of two two mesons and b) the decay proceeds via
resonance formation. QCD sum rules including instanton contributions are used

Special case of sunset: reduction and epsilon-expansion
We consider two loop sunset diagrams with two mass scales m and M at the
threshold and pseudotreshold that cannot be treated by earlier published
formula. The complete reduction to master integrals is given. The master
integrals are evaluated as series in ratio m/M and in epsilon with the help of
differential equation method. The rules of asymptotic expansion in the case
when q^2 is at the (pseudo)threshold are given.Comment: LaTeX, 13 pages, 1 figur
Galactic periodicity and the oscillating G model
We consider the model involving the oscillation of the effective
gravitational constant that has been put forward in an attempt to reconcile the
observed periodicity in the galaxy number distribution with the standard
cosmological models. This model involves a highly nonlinear dynamics which we
analyze numerically. We carry out a detailed study of the bound that
nucleosynthesis imposes on this model. The analysis shows that for any assumed
value for (the total energy density) one can fix the value of
(the baryonic energy density) in such a way as to
accommodate the observational constraints coming from the
primordial abundance. In particular, if we impose the inflationary value
the resulting baryonic energy density turns out to be . This result lies in the very narrow range allowed by the observed values of the primordial
abundances of the other light elements. The remaining fraction of

Survival estimates of bycatch individuals discarded from bivalve dredges
The fate of released bycatch is an issue of great interest for fisheries research and management. Survival experiments were carried out to assess the survival capacity of animals damaged and discarded during clam dredging operations. Three common bycatch species, two fish (Trachinus vipera; Dicologlossa cuneata) and one crab (Polybius henslowii), were collected during the sorting of catches from a commercial dredging boat. An arbitrary score scale was used to quantify the type and extent of damage to the organisms. Onboard, damaged individuals were placed in tanks containing seawater which were subsequently transferred to the laboratory. Survival experiments were conducted during the subsequent 48h. D. cuneata exhibited the lowest mortality after 48h (54%), followed by P. henslowii (65%) and T. vipera (81%). Despite the magnitude of the percentage mortalities determined, the average number of individuals estimated to die during a 15 minutes tow (standard commercial fishing time) was relatively small: 1.2, 3.24 and 11 for D. cuneata, T. vipera and P. henslowii, respectively. Nevertheless, when these figures are extrapolated to cover all the dredging fleet the impact of this practice on the populations of the species studied can be significant, particulary for D. cuneata
