    Cooperative Learning Approach to Delivering Professional Modules to Bachelor and Master Students: TPU Experience

    Modern tendencies in engineering education set certain requirements on the competences to be obtained. To enable a future engineer to work at a highly competitive level and become an internationally recognized specialist, they must possess advanced English speaking and writing skills. At present most universities introduce educational programs that attract bright domestic and international students to ensure that they are in demand at the global market. The Strategic Program on Competitiveness Enhancement of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University proposes that modules of professional training should be developed and delivered in English as a language of instruction so that the quality of teaching could be raised. To develop their own approaches to teaching, improve their language proficiency and develop courses and their elements in English, TPU teachers are to meet these challenging requirements and design course documentation and teaching aids, and engage modern teaching approaches in order to ensure high quality work with student groups which are often mixed in their abilities in both professional subjects and language proficiency levels. This paper addresses the course "Professional Training in English" which was developed upon completion of the joint program of TPU and the University of Southampton "Delivering through the Medium of English" and has successfully been delivered to bachelor students with the major "Oil and Gas Engineering" using the cooperative learning approach. The cooperative learning approach has proved to be one of the most successful in terms of teaching professional English to groups of students with mixed abilities

    Intrinsic quadrupole moment of the nucleon

    We address the question of the intrinsic quadrupole moment Q_0 of the nucleon in various models. All models give a positive intrinsic quadrupole moment for the proton. This corresponds to a prolate deformation. We also calculate the intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta(1232). All our models lead to a negative intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta corresponding to an oblate deformation.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    Analysis of clogging in constructed wetlands using magnetic resonance

    In this work we demonstrate the potential of permanent magnet based magnetic resonance sensors to monitor and assess the extent of pore clogging in water filtration systems. The performance of the sensor was tested on artificially clogged gravel substrates and on gravel bed samples from constructed wetlands used to treat wastewater. Data indicate that the spin lattice relaxation time is linearly related to the hydraulic conductivity in such systems. In addition, within biologically active filters we demonstrate the ability to determine the relative ratio of biomass to abiotic solids, a measurement which is not possible using alternative techniques

    The purpose was to compare two approaches for the acquisition and analysis of dynamic-contrast-enhanced MRI data with respect to differences in the modelling of the arterial input-function (AIF), the dependency of the model parameters on physiological parameters and their numerical stability. Eight hundred tissue concentration curves were simulated for different combinations of perfusion, permeability, interstitial volume and plasma volume based on two measured AIFs and analysed according to the two commonly used approaches. The transfer constants (Approach 1) K (trans) and (Approach 2) k (ep) were correlated with all tissue parameters. K (trans) showed a stronger dependency on perfusion, and k (ep) on permeability. The volume parameters (Approach 1) v (e) and (Approach 2) A were mainly influenced by the interstitial and plasma volume. Both approaches allow only rough characterisation of tissue microcirculation and microvasculature. Approach 2 seems to be somewhat more robust than 1, mainly due to the different methods of CA administration

    Neural network approximated Bayesian inference of edge electron density profiles at JET

    A neural network (NN) has been trained on the inference of the edge electron density profiles from measurements of the JET lithium beam emission spectroscopy (Li-BES) diagnostic. The novelty of the approach resides in the fact that the network has been trained to be a fast surrogate model of an existing Bayesian model of the diagnostic implemented within the Minerva framework. Previous work showed the very first application of this method to an x-ray imaging diagnostic at the W7-X experiment, and it was argued that the method was general enough that it may be applied to different physics systems. Here, we try to show that the claim made there is valid. What makes the approach general and versatile is the common definition of different models within the same framework. The network is tested on data measured during several different pulses and the predictions compared to the results obtained with the full model Bayesian inference. The NN analysis only requires tens of microseconds on a GPU compared to the tens of minutes long full inference. Finally, in relation to what was presented in the previous work, we demonstrate an improvement in the method of calculation of the network uncertainties, achieved by using a state-of-the-art deep learning technique based on a variational inference interpretation of the network training. The advantage of this calculation resides in the fact that it relies on fewer assumptions, and no extra computation time is required besides the conventional network evaluation time.     Temporal Variability of Organic C and Nitrate in a Shallow Aquifer

    The loading of organic substrates into shallow aquifers may follow seasonal cycles, which will impact the transport and fate of agrichemicals. The objective of this research was to measure temporal changes in the groundwater dissolved organic C (DOC) and nitrate concentrations. Groundwater monitoring wells were installed and sediment samples from the aquifer were collected in 1991. Sediment samples were used to evaluate denitrification potentials, while water samples were collected at periodic intervals in 1992 and 1993 from the surface of the aquifer. Water samples were analyzed for nitrate-N and DOC-C. Denitrification was observed in sediment amended with nitrate and incubated under anaerobic conditions at 10°C. Addition of algae lazed biomass increased denitrification, establishing that denitrification was substrate limited. In the aquifer, DOC concentrations followed seasonal patterns. DOC concentrations were highest following spring recharge and then decreased. Peak timing indicates that freezing and thawing were responsible for seasonal DOC patterns. These findings show that seasonally driven physical processes, such as freezing and thawing, influence organic substrate transport from surface to subsurface environments, and that this process should be taken into account when assessing agrichemical detoxification rates in shallow aquifers
