Pediatric Farm Injuries: Morbidity and Mortality

Introduction. Agriculture is an industry where family members oftenlive and work on the same premises. This study evaluated injury patternsand outcomes in children from farm-related accidents. Methods. A 10-year retrospective review of farm-accident relatedinjuries was conducted of patients 17 years and younger. Data collectedincluded demographics, injury mechanism, accident details, injuryseverity and patterns, treatments required, hospitalization details, anddischarge disposition. Results. Sixty-five patients were included; 58.5% were male and themean age was 9.7 years. Median Injury Severity Score and GlasgowComa Scale were 5 and 15, respectively. Accident mechanisms includedanimal-related (43.1%), fall (21.5%), and motor vehicle (21.5%).Soft tissue injuries, concussions and upper extremity fractures werethe most common injuries observed (58.5%, 29.2%, and 26.2%,respectively). Twenty-six patients (40%) required surgical intervention.Mean hospital length of stay was 3.4 ± 4.7 days. The majority ofpatients were discharged to home (n = 62, 95.4%) and two patientssuffered permanent disability. Conclusion. Overall, outcomes for this population were favorable,but additional measures to increase safety, such as fall prevention,animal handling, and driver safety training should be advocated.KS J Med 2017;10(4):92-95

The Violence of Silencing

I argue that silencing (the act of preventing someone from communicating, broadly construed) can be an act of both interpersonal and institutional violence. My argument has two main steps. First, I follow others in analyzing violence as violation of integrity and show that undermining someone’s capacities as a knower can be such a violation. Second, I argue that silencing someone can violate their epistemic capacities in that way. I conclude by exploring when silencing someone might be morally justifiable, even if doing so is an act of violence

Argument from Personal Narrative: A Case Study of Rachel Moran's Paid For: My Journey Through Prostitution

Personal narratives can let us in on aspects of reality which we have not experienced for ourselves, and are thus important sources for philosophical reflection. Yet a venerable tradition in mainstream philosophy has little room for arguments which rely on personal narrative, on the grounds that narratives are particular and testimonial, whereas philosophical arguments should be systematic and transparent. I argue that narrative arguments are an important form of philosophical argument. Their testimonial aspects witness to novel facets of reality, but their argumentative aspects help us to understand those facets for ourselves. My argument takes the form of a case study of the exemplary narrative argument penned by Rachel Moran, a former prostitute who uses her experiences to argue that prostitution amounts to sexual abuse. “Me Too”: Epistemic Injustice and the Struggle for Recognition

Congdon (2017), Giladi (2018), and McConkey (2004) challenge feminist epistemologists and recognition theorists to come together to analyze epistemic injustice. I take up this challenge by highlighting the failure of recognition in cases of testimonial and hermeneutical injustice experienced by victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault. I offer the #MeToo movement as a case study to demonstrate how the process of mutual recognition makes visible and helps overcome the epistemic injustice suffered by victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault. I argue that in declaring “me too,” the epistemic subject emerges in the context of a polyphonic symphony of victims claiming their status as agents who are able to make sense of their own social experiences and able to convey their knowledge to others

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in order to provide injury surveillance for youth on farms in the U.S., partnered with the USDA to conduct the Childhood Agricultural Injury Survey (CAIS). CAIS data for all farm youth less than 20 years of age have been collected intermittently since 1998. CAIS data from 2012 indicated that an estimated 25.9 million youth lived on, worked on, or visited U.S. farms. These youth experienced almost 14,000 injuries while on the farm. The majority of these injuries occurred to males (7,290) and youth between the ages of 10 and 15 years (5,766). Approximately 20% (2,739) of the injuries were related to work being done on the farm. Youth living on the farm incurred 56% (7,784) of the injuries. An additional 5,771 injuries occurred to hired and visiting youth. Although youth injuries on farms have declined, the numbers are still unacceptably high.
