    The expression of the title has been used for some time to produce a concise summary of the major distinction between “art” and “science.” Our goal is to give a fuller and deeper understanding of this statement by discussing its meaning and interpretation within the context of a precise definition of science. We conclude that “Art is I, science is we,” captures accurately the fundamental difference between these two disciplines

    Bio-Degradable Polyurethane Foams Produced by Liquefied Polyol from Wheat Straw Biomass

    In the present work, an abundant and unused residue (wheat straw) has been employed to synthesize a polyol as a substituent of castor oil in polyurethane foams. The liquefied product showed excellent properties for the proposed application. Castor oil was substituted with up to 50% wheat straw polyol in the formulation of polyurethane foams, which were prepared using two different isocyanates (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI)). The evaluation of physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the foams revealed that these materials can successfully be formed with up to 40% wheat straw polyols since all the results were improved. Moreover, at this polyol concentration, the morphology of the foams was presented as a compact and ordered structure. Following this trend, the foams showed excellent biodegradability at 30 days (5.60 and 7.31% for TDI and MDI foams, respectively) and 60 days (8.49 and 9.88% for TDI and MDI foams, respectively) in the soil media tests carried out. Thus, the materials prepared in this work can be proposed for agricultural applications such as use in plant nurseries

[email protected] Abstract INTRODUCTION: Despite early dietary therapy, many patients with galactosemia show a neurodegenerative disease specially evident in speech impairment and movement disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, show cerebral white matter changes with hypomielinization bilateral and symetrical periventricular hypersignal in T2. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We presented clinical and neuroradiological data of seven children (3 to 12 years of age) with classical galactosemia. All had a typical presentation in neonatal period. Two children had normal development (10 and 12 years-old), four presented developmental delay (10, 7, 4 and 3 years-old), and one showed a dystonic cerebral palsy (kernicterus). RESULTS: The brain MRI showed the typical involvement of white matter, in five children, and basal ganglia abnormalities in the kernicterus patient. Three patients are homozygous for Q188R mutation and two are compound heterozygous. CONCLUSION: We found a positive correlation among developmental delay, white matter involvement and Q188R mutation

    On February 5, 2016, 25 educators from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the University of Richmond (UR) gathered in Richmond, Virginia, for an annual service-learning workshop. This year’s workshop featured Robin Everhart, PhD, VCU assistant professor of psychology, as keynote speaker. Jumpstarted by Everhart’s research on student empathy, workshop participants explored the concept of empathy and collaboratively developed strategies for integrating empathy into the service-learning experience. This document grows out of Everhart’s presentation and group discussions during that workshop and represents a collection of ideas generated

    Electronic structure of crystalline binary and ternary Cd-Te-O compounds

    The electronic structure of crystalline CdTe, CdO, α\alpha-TeO2_2, CdTeO3_3 and Cd3_3TeO6_6 is studied by means of first principles calculations. The band structure, total and partial density of states, and charge densities are presented. For α\alpha-TeO2_2 and CdTeO3_3, Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation (LDA) correctly describes the insulating character of these compounds. In the first four compounds, LDA underestimates the optical bandgap by roughly 1 eV. Based on this trend, we predict an optical bandgap of 1.7 eV for Cd3_3TeO6_6. This material shows an isolated conduction band with a low effective mass, thus explaining its semiconducting character observed recently. In all these oxides, the top valence bands are formed mainly from the O 2p electrons. On the other hand, the binding energy of the Cd 4d band, relative to the valence band maximum, in the ternary compounds is smaller than in CdTe and CdO.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables.     Correlation between magnetic and transport properties in nanocrystalline Fe thin films: A grain-boundary magnetic disorder effect

    We report on transport and magnetic measurements of islanded Fe(110) thin films. The electrical resistivity exhibits an anomalous increase at low temperatures, which disappears under the action of a magnetic field. Since such an anomaly completely disappears under the action of a magnetic field, it is inferred that it originates from spin-dependent scattering. We interpret the strong changes in the spin-dependent scattering in our films to be due to a low-temperature spin freezing of the island boundary magnetic regions that impedes ferromagnetic exchange between islands. A consequence of this magnetic behavior is the random arrangement of the individual magnetization, determined by the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of each island, resulting in an increase of the resistivity below the freezing temperature.Z.S. and J.L.M. acknowledge the Comunidad de Madrid for financial support.     Kinetic studies of the release profiles of antiepileptic drug released from a nanostructured TiO2 matrix.

    In this paper is reported the “in vitro†release kinetic studies of antiepileptic drugs released from an inorganic, titanium oxide (TiO2) porous matrix. In order to determine the drug release mechanism, the experimental values were fitted to different mathematical models: zero-order, firs-order, Higuchi, Hixson-Crowel and Peppas. TiO2 was prepared by the sol-gel method adding valproic acid (VPA) or phenytoine (DHP) during the titanium n-butoxide hydrolysis step. The drug-TiO2 systems were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The “in vitro†release experiments were performed at laboratory scale following the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards. The obtained materials have a morphology of nanoparticle agglomerates. The particles have different sizes with some roughness and spherical shape. Peppas model suggests for both systems, that the release mechanism is controlled by two parallel processes. The first one is by diffusion of the drug through the matrix and the second is related to a gradient of constant diffusion by ingress of the solvent in the matrix

    SHARDS: Constraints on the dust attenuation law of star-forming galaxies at z~2

    We make use of SHARDS, an ultra-deep (<26.5AB) galaxy survey that provides optical photo-spectra at resolution R~50, via medium band filters (FWHM~150A). This dataset is combined with ancillary optical and NIR fluxes to constrain the dust attenuation law in the rest-frame NUV region of star-forming galaxies within the redshift window 1.5<z<3. We focus on the NUV bump strength (B) and the total-to-selective extinction ratio (Rv), targeting a sample of 1,753 galaxies. By comparing the data with a set of population synthesis models coupled to a parametric dust attenuation law, we constrain Rv and B, as well as the colour excess, E(B-V). We find a correlation between Rv and B, that can be interpreted either as a result of the grain size distribution, or a variation of the dust geometry among galaxies. According to the former, small dust grains are associated with a stronger NUV bump. The latter would lead to a range of clumpiness in the distribution of dust within the interstellar medium of star-forming galaxies. The observed wide range of NUV bump strengths can lead to a systematic in the interpretation of the UV slope (β\beta) typically used to characterize the dust content.
