A Review of the Role of Melatonin in Irritable Bowel Syndrome

    Get PDF
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a troubling disease experienced worldwide. The presentation of symptoms varies from patient to patient, and current prescription treatments can be inadequate in resolving symptoms. This article explores the available scientific literature supporting the use of melatonin in alleviating IBS symptoms

The effects of prolonged prophylactic ankle bracing on dynamic postural control

The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of a prophylactic ankle brace over the course of an entire volleyball season would impair dynamic postural control. All volleyball players wore Active Ankle braces for all practices and games during the competitive season consisting of 12 weeks. All subjects who met the inclusion criteria were pre-tested on the Star Excursion Balance Test prior to the 2005 volleyball season to determine a level of dynamic postural control. They were also tested during the pre-testing period for ankle ligament laxity, ankle muscle strength, arch index and with and without the brace. They were tested on the SEBT again at a mid-point in the season and then again after the season.;Long term prophylactic ankle brace use may cause a decrease in dynamic postural control as measured by the SEBT. Relationship Patterns Among Men and Women from Stepfather Families

This research examined differences in relationship patterns between men and women in stepfamilies and men and women in biological families. Previous studies have generally reported more distant relationships with parents for respondents in stepfamilies. Findings on relationships outside the home have been contradictory; some research observed no effect on peer relationships for subjects from stepfamilies, still others reported more difficulty in relationships and greater risk for delinquency among this population. In order to measure relationship differences, three psychometric scales and the social network list were administered to 215 college students (63 stepchildren and 152 biological children). Results indicated that stepsons experienced more loneliness and less peer attachment than respondents from biological families, but stepdaughters reported being less lonely and closer to peers than respondents from biological families. Women, in general, were less lonely than men. Participant from step families endorsed less family satisfaction and less parent attachment than participants from biological families. On the social network, stepchildren listed more people on their social network than children from biological families did; in particular, stepchildren included more extended family than subjects from biological families. In conclusion, stepchildren are more distant from their families than are biological children, and stepdaughters appear to compensate with relationships outside the home more effectively than stepsons do

An Autoethnographic Journey Through Craftivism: Making with/for Meaning

    Get PDF
Through this dissertation, I set out to investigate how craftivism as a way of making with/for meaning might foster transformative experiences within the discipline of art education. My motivating questions for this research project as I began my qualitative process follow. In what ways does my art-making inform my teaching practice? How do both my art and teaching practice inform my research practice? In what ways does my feminist identity impact these practices, ways of thinking and knowing, and the process of becoming who I am? And why is this research relevant to the field of art education? Given the nature of my research questions, I employed qualitative methods to critically explore, research, gather data, analyze, to better understand my place within making with/for meaning and to ultimately discuss my findings

Accessing and affording child care and low-income mothers\u27 employment over time: An ecological approach

    Get PDF
These two studies utilized a large, longitudinal random sample to examine the relationship between child problem behaviors and maternal risk factors and low-income mothers\u27 ability to access and afford child care, as well as how the ability to access and afford child care influences low-income mothers\u27 employment over time. Results showed that low-income mothers with higher levels of maternal risk factors were significantly more likely to report a decreased ability to access and afford child care. Additionally, low-income mothers with higher levels of maternal risk factors were more likely to become unemployed than to maintain employment over time. Policy implication and directions for future research are discussed

    College Financial Data

This analysis explores College Scorecard information available from the Department of Education’s Open Data Platform. The College Scorecard is an aggregation of data from higher education institutions across the United States for prospective students to research an institution’s cost, loan debt, graduation rate, and retention rate. The Scorecard includes information from institutions that process federal financial aid. Such data is gathered from the Integrated Post-secondary Education Data System (IPEDS), a survey instituted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), and student submissions of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). R programming is used to create data visualizations. This study seeks to gain an understanding of financial issues from the totality of colleges in the Scorecard dataset

Fairness in smart grid congestion management

    Get PDF
With the energy transition, grid congestion is increasingly becoming a problem. This paper proposes the implementation of fairness in congestion management by presenting quantitative fair optimization goals and fairness measuring tools. Furthermore, this paper presents a congestion management solution in the form of an egalitarian allocation mechanism. Finally, this paper proves that this mechanism is truthful, pareto efficient, and maximizes a fair optimization goal
