Evidence-based Management and Leadership
Organizations can be led and managed in many different ways and there is no shortage of perspectives, models, and frameworks for thinking about how such tasks can be accomplished. This chapter focuses on one such perspective: evidence-based management (EBMgt). At its core is the idea that when managers and organizations make decisions, evidence of various types should be collected, critically appraised, and taken into account. Put this way, EBMgt does not appear to be either new or radical. However, as we shall go on to discuss, recent attempts to elaborate and flesh out this idea show that while some of its core principles are unremarkable, actually doing EBMgt presents major challenges, threats, and opportunities. Far from being business as usual, using evidence seriously and systematically appears to represent a significant departure from what organizations typically do.
This chapter starts with an account of the origins of the idea of evidence-based practice in other fields and how it has been adapted in the development of EBMgt. It then looks at the sometimes controversial notion of leadership and what we know about what managers and leaders do. We then consider the extent to which leaders, managers, and organizations are evidence-based in their approach to managing organizations and what can be done to further develop this approach. Finally, we discuss some of the challenges that managing in an evidence-based way present to leaders and to more traditional ways of thinking about what leadership entails
Breathing straws
Following nasal, septal or endoscopic surgery, it is common practice to insert nasal packs in both nasal cavities to achieve haemostasis, if there has been any bleeding at the end of the procedure. However, such packs make it difficult for patients to breathe, mainly in the first post-operative night which leads to discomfort and poor sleep. To enable patients to breathe better with nasal packs in situ, we describe a simple technique using trimmed straws and wrapped Netcell® packs for post-operative care following septal surgery, rhinoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery. Backflow in a Fermi Liquid
We calculate the backflow current around a fixed impurity in a Fermi liquid.
The leading contribution at long distances is radial and proportional to 1/r^2.
It is caused by the current induced density modulation first discussed by
Landauer. The familiar 1/r^3 dipolar backflow obtained in linear response by
Pines and Nozieres is only the next to leading term, whose strength is
calculated here to all orders in the scattering. In the charged case the
condition of perfect screening gives rise to a novel sum rule for the phase
shifts. Similar to the behavior in a classical viscous liquid, the friction
force is due only to the leading contribution in the backflow while the dipolar

Adolescent but not adult-born neurons are critical for susceptibility to chronic social defeat
Recent evidence implicates adult hippocampal neurogenesis in regulating behavioral
and physiologic responses to stress. Hippocampal neurogenesis occurs across the
lifespan, however the rate of cell birth is up to 300% higher in adolescent mice
compared to adults. Adolescence is a sensitive period in development where emotional
circuitry and stress reactivity undergo plasticity establishing life-long set points. Therefore
neurogenesis occurring during adolescence may be particularly important for emotional
behavior. However, little is known about the function of hippocampal neurons born during
adolescence. In order to assess the contribution of neurons born in adolescence to
the adult stress response and depression-related behavior, we transiently reduced cell
proliferation either during adolescence, or during adulthood in GFAP-Tk mice. We found
that the intervention in adolescence did not change adult baseline behavioral response in
the forced swim test, sucrose preference test or social affiliation test, and did not change
adult corticosterone responses to an acute stressor. However following chronic social
defeat, adult mice with reduced adolescent neurogenesis showed a resilient phenotype.
A similar transient reduction in adult neurogenesis did not affect depression-like behaviors
or stress induced corticosterone. Our study demonstrates that hippocampal neurons born
during adolescence, but not in adulthood are important to confer susceptibility to chronic
social defeat
The role of the spin in quasiparticle interference
Quasiparticle interference patterns measured by scanning tunneling microscopy
(STM) can be used to study the local electronic structure of metal surfaces and
high temperature superconductors. Here, we show that even in non-magnetic
systems the spin of the quasiparticles can have a profound effect on the
interference patterns. On Bi(110), where the surface state bands are not
spin-degenerate, the patterns are not related to the dispersion of the
electronic states in a simple way. In fact, the features which are expected for
the spin-independent situation are absent and the observed interference
patterns can only be interpreted by taking spin-conserving scattering events

Pinedale Glacial History of the Upper Arkansas River Valley: New Moraine Chronologies, Modeling Results and Geologic Mapping
This field trip guidebook chapter outlines the glacial history of the upper Arkansas River valley, Colorado, and builds on a previous GSA field trip to the same area in 2010. The following will be presented: (1) new cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages of moraine boulders from the Pinedale and Bull Lake glaciations (Marine Isotope Stages 2 and 6, respectively) located adjacent to the Twin Lakes Reservoir, (2) numerical modeling of glaciers during the Pinedale glaciation in major tributaries draining into the upper Arkansas River, (3) discharge estimates for glacial-lake outburst floods in the upper Arkansas River valley, and (4) 10Be ages on flood boulders deposited downvalley from the moraine sequences. This research was stimulated by a new geologic map of the Granite 7.5’ quadrangle, in which the mapping of surficial deposits was revised based in part on the interpretation of newly acquired LiDAR data and field investigations. The new 10Be ages of the Pinedale terminal moraine at Twin Lakes average 21.8 ± 0.7 ka (n=14), which adds to nearby Pinedale terminal moraine ages of 23.6 ± 1.4 ka (n=5), 20.5 ± 0.2 ka (n=3) and 16.6 ± 1.0 ka, and downvalley outburst flood terraces that date to 20.9 ± 0.9 ka (n=4) and 19.0 ± 0.6 ka (n=4). This growing chronology leads to improved understanding of the controls and timing of glaciation in the western U.S., the modeling of glacial-lake outburst flooding, and the reconstruction of paleo-temperature through glacier modeling
