Implementing a Deliberate Neologism about the Filipino-American Identity Crisis
Neologisms are words that have recently entered our language but are only just beginning to be accepted as part of daily usage. As the English language evolves, new neologisms are formed while the usage of certain words may fade into relative obscurity. New words are coined to reflect the changing moods and cultural needs of the time. When it comes to critical race theory, neologisms can be used as a method of spreading awareness and addressing a problem. The Filipino American community is a marginalized group that experiences identity disturbance from the duality of both their nationality and ethnicity. Furthermore, there seems to be prejudice for Filipinos in the diaspora from both Filipinos from the Philippines and Americans alike. The Filipino American identity has been the subject of debate between Filipinos and Americans. Our neologism, âincogthymia,â was invented in response to this debate. In this presentation, we will showcase the process of inventing & the results of attempting to implement a deliberate, academic neologism. We also highlight evidence from scholarly articles and personal accounts to demonstrate the Filipino American Identity Crisis
Bound states of spin-half particles in a static gravitational field close to the black hole field
We consider the bound-state energy levels of a spin-1/2 fermion in the
gravitational field of a near-black hole object. In the limit that the metric
of the body becomes singular, all binding energies tend to the rest-mass energy
(i.e. total energy approaches zero). We present calculations of the ground
state energy for three specific interior metrics (Florides, Soffel and
Schwarzschild) for which the spectrum collapses and becomes quasi-continuous in
the singular metric limit. The lack of zero or negative energy states prior to
this limit being reached prevents particle pair production occurring.
Therefore, in contrast to the Coulomb case, no pairs are produced in the
non-singular static metric. For the Florides and Soffel metrics the singularity
occurs in the black hole limit, while for the Schwarzschild interior metric it
corresponds to infinite pressure at the centre. The behaviour of the energy
level spectrum is discussed in the context of the semi-classical approximation
and using general properties of the metric.Comment: 16 pages, 6 Figures. Submitted to General Relativity and Gravitatio
Pathologies in Asymptotically Lifshitz Spacetimes
There has been significant interest in the last several years in studying
possible gravitational duals, known as Lifshitz spacetimes, to anisotropically
scaling field theories by adding matter to distort the asymptotics of an AdS
spacetime. We point out that putative ground state for the most heavily studied
example of such a spacetime, that with a flat spatial section, suffers from a
naked singularity and further point out this singularity is not resolvable by
any known stringy effect. We review the reasons one might worry that
asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes are unstable and employ the initial data
problem to study the stability of such systems. Rather surprisingly this
question, and even the initial value problem itself, for these spacetimes turns
out to generically not be well-posed. A generic normalizable state will evolve
in such a way to violate Lifshitz asymptotics in finite time. Conversely,
enforcing the desired asymptotics at all times puts strong restrictions not
just on the metric and fields in the asymptotic region but in the deep interior
as well. Generically, even perturbations of the matter field of compact support
are not compatible with the desired asymptotics.Comment: 36 pages, 1 figure, v2: Enhanced discussion of singularity, including

Breast Cancer Presenting as Unilateral Arm Edema
CONTEXT: Symptomatic arm lymphedema as the presenting symptom of invasive breast carcinoma is a rare occurrence. DESIGN: We report a case of invasive breast cancer presenting with unilateral arm swelling. The patient was initially thought to have venous thrombosis. A thorough physical examination and a mammogram revealed the presence of breast cancer and associated subclinical axillary lymphadenopathy. CONCLUSION: Failure to recognize this presentation can lead to misdiagnosis or a significant delay in diagnosis and treatment
Equivalent forms of Dirac equations in curved spacetimes and generalized de Broglie relations
One may ask whether the relations between energy and frequency and between
momentum and wave vector, introduced for matter waves by de Broglie, are
rigorously valid in the presence of gravity. In this paper, we show this to be
true for Dirac equations in a background of gravitational and electromagnetic
fields. We first transform any Dirac equation into an equivalent canonical
form, sometimes used in particular cases to solve Dirac equations in a curved
spacetime. This canonical form is needed to apply the Whitham Lagrangian
method. The latter method, unlike the WKB method, places no restriction on the
magnitude of Planck's constant to obtain wave packets, and furthermore
preserves the symmetries of the Dirac Lagrangian. We show using canonical Dirac
fields in a curved spacetime, that the probability current has a Gordon
decomposition into a convection current and a spin current, and that the spin
current vanishes in the Whitham approximation, which explains the negligible
effect of spin on wave packet solutions, independent of the size of Planck's
constant. We further discuss the classical-quantum correspondence in a curved
spacetime based on both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of the Whitham
equations. We show that the generalized de Broglie relations in a curved
spacetime are a direct consequence of Whitham's Lagrangian method, and not just
a physical hypothesis as introduced by Einstein and de Broglie, and by many
quantum mechanics textbooks.Comment: PDF, 32 pages in referee format. Added significant material on

Chern-Simons black holes: scalar perturbations, mass and area spectrum and greybody factors
We study the Chern-Simons black holes in d-dimensions and we calculate
analytically the quasi-normal modes of the scalar perturbations and we show
that they depend on the highest power of curvature present in the Chern-Simons
theory. We obtain the mass and area spectrum of these black holes and we show
that they have a strong dependence on the topology of the transverse space and
they are not evenly spaced. We also calculate analytically the reflection and
transmission coefficients and the absorption cross section and we show that at
low frequency limit there is a range of modes which contributes to the
absorption cross section.Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, the title has been changed to reflect the
addition of an another section on the reflection, transmission coefficients
and absorption cross sections of the Chern-Simons black holes. Version to be

Regional Endothermy in a Coral Reef Fish?
Although a few pelagic species exhibit regional endothermy, most fish are regarded as ectotherms. However, we document significant regional endothermy in a benthic reef fish. Individual steephead parrotfish, Chlorurus microrhinos (Labridae, formerly Scaridae) were tagged and their internal temperatures were monitored for a 24 h period using active acoustic telemetry. At night, on the reef, C. microrhinos were found to maintain a consistent average peritoneal cavity temperature 0.16±0.005°C (SE) warmer than ambient. Diurnal internal temperatures were highly variable for individuals monitored on the reef, while in tank-based trials, peritoneal cavity temperatures tracked environmental temperatures. The mechanisms responsible for a departure of the peritoneal cavity temperature from environmental temperature occurred in C. microrhinos are not yet understood. However, the diet and behavior of the species suggests that heat in the peritoneal cavity may result primarily from endogenous thermogenesis coupled with physiological heat retention mechanisms. The presence of limited endothermy in C. microrhinos indicates that a degree of uncertainty may exist in the manner that reef fish respond to their thermal environment. At the very least, they do not always appear to respond to environmental temperatures as neutral thermal vessels and do display limited, but significant, visceral warming
Critical Trapped Surfaces Formation in the Collision of Ultrarelativistic Charges in (A)dS
We study the formation of marginally trapped surfaces in the head-on
collision of two ultrarelativistic charges in space-time. The metric of
ultrarelativistic charged particles in is obtained by boosting
Reissner-Nordstr\"om space-time to the speed of light. We show that
formation of trapped surfaces on the past light cone is only possible when
charge is below certain critical - situation similar to the collision of two
ultrarelativistic charges in Minkowski space-time. This critical value depends
on the energy of colliding particles and the value of a cosmological constant.
There is richer structure of critical domains in case. In this case
already for chargeless particles there is a critical value of the cosmological
constant only below which trapped surfaces formation is possible. Appearance of
arbitrary small nonzero charge significantly changes the physical picture.
Critical effect which has been observed in the neutral case does not take place
more. If the value of the charge is not very large solution to the equation on
trapped surface exists for any values of cosmological radius and energy density
of shock waves. Increasing of the charge leads to decrease of the trapped
surface area, and at some critical point the formation of trapped surfaces of
the type mentioned above becomes impossible.Comment: 30 pages, Latex, 7 figures, Refs. added and typos correcte
Isolated and dynamical horizons and their applications
Over the past three decades, black holes have played an important role in
quantum gravity, mathematical physics, numerical relativity and gravitational
wave phenomenology. However, conceptual settings and mathematical models used
to discuss them have varied considerably from one area to another. Over the
last five years a new, quasi-local framework was introduced to analyze diverse
facets of black holes in a unified manner. In this framework, evolving black
holes are modeled by dynamical horizons and black holes in equilibrium by
isolated horizons. We review basic properties of these horizons and summarize
applications to mathematical physics, numerical relativity and quantum gravity.
This paradigm has led to significant generalizations of several results in
black hole physics. Specifically, it has introduced a more physical setting for
black hole thermodynamics and for black hole entropy calculations in quantum
gravity; suggested a phenomenological model for hairy black holes; provided
novel techniques to extract physics from numerical simulations; and led to new
laws governing the dynamics of black holes in exact general relativity.Comment: 77 pages, 12 figures. Typos and references correcte
