Spin detection at elevated temperatures using a driven double quantum dot
We consider a double quantum dot in the Pauli blockade regime interacting
with a nearby single spin. We show that under microwave irradiation the average
electron occupations of the dots exhibit resonances that are sensitive to the
state of the nearby spin. The system thus acts as a spin meter for the nearby
spin. We investigate the conditions for a non-demolition read-out of the spin
and find that the meter works at temperatures comparable to the dot charging
energy and sensitivity is mainly limited by the intradot spin relaxation.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
The Statistics of the BATSE Spectral Features
The absence of a BATSE line detection in a gamma-ray burst spectrum during
the mission's first six years has led to a statistical analysis of the
occurrence of lines in the BATSE burst database; this statistical analysis will
still be relevant if lines are detected. We review our methodology, and present
new simulations of line detectability as a function of the line parameters. We
also discuss the calculation of the number of ``trials'' in the BATSE database,

An Ecological Risk Model for Early Childhood Anxiety: The Importance of Early Child Symptoms and Temperament
Childhood anxiety is impairing and associated with later emotional disorders. Studying risk factors for child anxiety may allow earlier identification of at-risk children for prevention efforts. This study applied an ecological risk model to address how early childhood anxiety symptoms, child temperament, maternal anxiety and depression symptoms, violence exposure, and sociodemographic risk factors predict school-aged anxiety symptoms. This longitudinal, prospective study was conducted in a representative birth cohort (n=1109). Structural equation modeling was used to examine hypothesized associations between risk factors measured in toddlerhood/preschool (age=3.0 years) and anxiety symptoms measured in kindergarten (age=6.0 years) and second grade (age= 8.0 years). Early child risk factors (anxiety symptoms and temperament) emerged as the most robust predictor for both parent-and child-reported anxiety outcomes and mediated the effects of maternal and family risk factors. Implications for early intervention and prevention studies are discussed
Solid fuel use and cooking practices as a major risk factor for ALRI mortality among African children
Background: Almost half of global child deaths due to acute lower respiratory infections (ALRIs) occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where three-quarters of the population cook with solid fuels. This study aims to quantify the impact of fuel type and cooking practices on childhood ALRI mortality in Africa, and to explore implications for public health interventions.
Methods: Early-release World Health Survey data for the year 2003 were pooled for 16 African countries. Among 32 620 children born during the last 10 years, 1455 (4.46%) were reported to have died prior to their fifth birthday. Survival analysis was used to examine the impact of different cooking-related parameters on ALRI mortality, defined as cough accompanied by rapid breathing or chest indrawing based on maternal recall of symptoms prior to death.
Results: Solid fuel use increases the risk of ALRI mortality with an adjusted hazard ratio of 2.35 (95% CI 1.22 to 4.52); this association grows stronger with increasing outcome specificity. Differences between households burning solid fuels on a well-ventilated stove and households relying on cleaner fuels are limited. In contrast, cooking with solid fuels in the absence of a chimney or hood is associated with an adjusted hazard ratio of 2.68 (1.38 to 5.23). Outdoor cooking is less harmful than indoor cooking but, overall, stove ventilation emerges as a more significant determinant of ALRI mortality.
Conclusions: This study shows substantial differences in ALRI mortality risk among African children in relation to cooking practices, and suggests that stove ventilation may be an important means of reducing indoor air pollution
Patterns of anxiety symptoms in toddlers and preschool-age children: Evidence of early differentiation
The degree to which young children’s anxiety symptoms differentiate according to diagnostic groupings is under-studied, especially in children below the age of 4 years. Theoretical (confirmatory factor analysis, CFA) and statistical (exploratory factor analysis, EFA) analytical methods were employed to test the hypothesis that anxiety symptoms among 2–3-year-old children from a non-clinical, representative sample would differentiate in a manner consistent with current diagnostic nosology. Anxiety symptom items were selected from two norm-referenced parent-report scales of child behavior. CFA and EFA results suggested that anxiety symptoms aggregate in a manner consistent with generalized anxiety, obsessive–compulsive symptoms, separation anxiety, and social phobia. Multi-dimensional models achieved good model fit and fit the data significantly better than undifferentiated models. Results from EFA and CFA methods were predominantly consistent and supported the grouping of early childhood anxiety symptoms into differentiated, diagnostic-specific categories
An XMM-Newton observation of the young open cluster NGC 2547: coronal activity at 30 Myr
We report XMM-Newton observations of the young open cluster NGC 2547 which
allow us to characterise coronal activity in solar-type stars at an age of 30
Myr. X-ray emission peaks among G-stars at luminosities (0.3-3keV) of
Lx~10^{30.5} erg/s and declines to Lx<=10^{29.0} erg/s among M-stars. Coronal
spectra show evidence for multi-temperature differential emission measures and
low coronal metal abundances (Z~0.3). The G- and K-type stars follow the same
relationship between X-ray activity and Rossby number established in older
clusters and field stars, although most solar-type stars in NGC 2547 exhibit
saturated/super-saturated X-ray activity levels. Median levels of Lx and
Lx/Lbol in the solar-type stars of NGC 2547 are similar to T-Tauri stars of the
Orion Nebula cluster (ONC), but an order of magnitude higher than in the older
Pleiades. The spread in X-ray activity levels among solar-type stars in NGC
2547 is much smaller than in older or younger clusters. Coronal temperatures
increase with Lx, Lx/Lbol and surface X-ray flux. Active solar-type stars in
NGC 2547 have coronal temperatures between those in the ONC and the most active
older ZAMS stars. A flaring rate (for total flare energies [0.3-3keV] >10^{34}
erg) of 1 every 350^{+350}_{-120} ks was found for solar-type stars, similar to
rates found in the ONC and Pleiades. Comparison with ROSAT HRI data taken 7
years previously reveals that only 10-15 percent of solar-type stars or stars
with Lx>3x10^{29} erg/s exhibit X-ray variability by more than a factor of two.
The similar levels of X-ray activity and rate of occurrence for large flares in
NGC 2547 and the ONC demonstrate that the X-ray radiation environment around
young solar-type stars remains relatively constant over their first 30 Myr

Quantum computing with an electron spin ensemble
We propose to encode a register of quantum bits in different collective
electron spin wave excitations in a solid medium. Coupling to spins is enabled
by locating them in the vicinity of a superconducting transmission line cavity,
and making use of their strong collective coupling to the quantized radiation
field. The transformation between different spin waves is achieved by applying
gradient magnetic fields across the sample, while a Cooper Pair Box, resonant
with the cavity field, may be used to carry out one- and two-qubit gate
