    Spin detection at elevated temperatures using a driven double quantum dot

    We consider a double quantum dot in the Pauli blockade regime interacting with a nearby single spin. We show that under microwave irradiation the average electron occupations of the dots exhibit resonances that are sensitive to the state of the nearby spin. The system thus acts as a spin meter for the nearby spin. We investigate the conditions for a non-demolition read-out of the spin and find that the meter works at temperatures comparable to the dot charging energy and sensitivity is mainly limited by the intradot spin relaxation.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

The routine method for measuring horizontal wind velocity is the space antenna technique (SA) while the Doppler technique is used to measure vertical velocities. It is possible to swing the transmitting beam in the east-west plane, allowing Doppler measurements of the EW wind component

    Adaptive Filters Revisited - RFI Mitigation in pulsar observations

    Pulsar detection and timing experiments are applications where adaptive filters seem eminently suitable tools for radio-frequency-interference (RFI) mitigation. We describe a novel variant which works well in field trials of pulsar observations centred on an observing frequency of 675 MHz, a bandwidth of 64 MHz and with 2-bit sampling. Adaptive filters have generally received bad press for RFI mitigation in radio astronomical observations with their most serious drawback being a spectral echo of the RFI embedded in the filtered signals. Pulsar observations are intrinsically less sensitive to this as they operate in the (pulsar period) time domain. The field trials have allowed us to identify those issues which limit the effectiveness of the adaptive filter. We conclude that adaptive filters can significantly improve pulsar observations in the presence of RFI.Comment: Accepted for publication in Radio Scienc

    Nucleation and Growth of GaN/AlN Quantum Dots

    We study the nucleation of GaN islands grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy on AlN(0001) in a Stranski-Krastanov mode. In particular, we assess the variation of their height and density as a function of GaN coverage. We show that the GaN growth passes four stages: initially, the growth is layer-by-layer; subsequently, two-dimensional precursor islands form, which transform into genuine three-dimensional islands. During the latter stage, island height and density increase with GaN coverage until the density saturates. During further GaN growth, the density remains constant and a bimodal height distribution appears. The variation of island height and density as a function of substrate temperature is discussed in the framework of an equilibrium model for Stranski-Krastanov growth.Comment: Submitted to PRB, 10 pages, 15 figure

    Selective spin coupling through a single exciton

    We present a novel scheme for performing a conditional phase gate between two spin qubits in adjacent semiconductor quantum dots through delocalized single exciton states, formed through the inter-dot Foerster interaction. We consider two resonant quantum dots, each containing a single excess conduction band electron whose spin embodies the qubit.     A study of logarithmic corrections and universal amplitude ratios in the two-dimensional 4-state Potts model

    Monte Carlo (MC) and series expansion (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the two-dimensional 4-state Potts model in the vicinity of the critical point are analysed. The role of logarithmic corrections is discussed and an approach is proposed in order to account numerically for these corrections in the determination of critical amplitudes. Accurate estimates of universal amplitude ratios A+/A−A_+/A_-, Γ+/Γ−\Gamma_+/\Gamma_-, ΓT/Γ−\Gamma_T/\Gamma_- and RC±R_C^\pm are given, which arouse new questions with respect to previous works

    Improving coastal livelihoods through sustainable aquaculture practices - a report to the collaborative APEC Grouper Research and Development Network

    Wild-harvest fisheries for live reef fish are largely over-exploited or unsustainable because of over-fishing and the widespread use of destructive fishing practices such as blast and cyanide fishing. Sustainable aquaculture – such as that of groupers – is one option for meeting the strong demand for reef fish, as well as potentially maintaining or improving the livelihoods of coastal communities. This report from a short study by the STREAM Initiative draws on secondary literature, media sources and four diverse case studies from at-risk reef fisheries, to frame a strategy for encouraging sustainable aquaculture as an alternative to destructive fishing practices. It was undertaken as a component of the APEC-funded project Collaborative Grouper Research and Development Network (FWG/01/2001) to better understand how recent technical advances in grouper culture and other complementary work – including that of the Asia-Pacific Marine Finfish Aquaculture Network (APMFAN) hosted by NACA – could better support the livelihoods of poor coastal communities.
