A chapter of the moral history of London: an interview with Bridget O’Connor.

Bridget O ’Connor is a young English fiction writer who has successfully published two collections of short stories, Here Comes John (1993) and Tell Her You Love Her (1997). Her stories introduce a great variety of voices: women or men of all ages and from many different social, cultural and professional background. However, many of them are first-person narratives involving a very peculiar character, young or middle-age, who generally lives in a city, London, and leads a lonely, boring and frustrating life. They make up a group of losers and drop-outs, characters who are socially, professionally or sexually doomed. This does not mean that Bridget O ’Connor always adopts a depressing tone for her sad stories. On the contrary, every now and then, especially in the second volume, there is a touch of vibrant mordant humour associated with a satiric intention. The grotesque exaggerations, the suggestive idiom and the effective ironies designed to ridicule the characters ’ obsessions and follies often produce some comic passages. These amusing elements are cleverly juxtaposed to other more gloomy and sometimes tender images. The immediacy and economy in her narrative brings to light one of the main virtues of her style. Everywhere the description and evocation have a precision, economy and sensitiveness which constitutes the reality of the books ’ style. Nothing is wasted. Every word and every detail are significant and necessary to create and evoke the appropriate mood. The descriptions are accurate, full of images which appeal to all our senses. There are credible dialogues in which the characters use a type of language which is appropriate to the situation, age or social status. Very often, style and purpose are closely knit in her stories. And all this clearly demonstrates her mastery of the genre. Bridget O ’Connor was interviewed in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) on 19 February 1999, during a course on contemporary British writing, organised by the Department of Modern Philology of the University of Alcalá and the British Council (Madrid)

A Systematic, Reliable Approach to Play Assessment in Preschoolers

Get PDF
Play assessment is gaining attention as a measure of the developing skills of young children. The procedures and methods of coding child behaviours vary considerably across researchers and practitioners. Because of this, definitive statements about the use of play assessment cannot be made without further research. The present study is an attempt to report a set of standardized procedures for play assessment along with an empirically based coding scheme (PIECES). The reliability of this system of play assessment is also investigated. High inter-observer reliability was found along with moderate test–retest correlations for both the typically developing (r = 0.48) and exceptional (r = 0.58) children. Thus, this version of play assessment holds promise as an observation system for intervention and progress monitoring in early childhood. The authors stress that more research is needed in this area before play assessment can either be used in early childhood or discounted as an inappropriate tool

Relational Factors of Senior Secondary School Students’ Preference for Teaching Profession

This study investigated the Relational Factors of Students Preference for Teaching Profession. Six hundred Senior Secondary School II students and their parents were selected through multi stage sampling technique. Three instruments were used for data collection: Students Teaching Profession Preference Scale (r = 0.70), Salary and Incentive Scale (r = 0.89) and Parental career value scale (r = 0.51) validated using Cronbach Alpha Reliability Analysis. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. Level of significance was taken to be 0.05. Students’ preference for teaching profession was found to be positive. It was also discovered that teaching profession is rated 5th out of 10 positions by parents. The study also revealed that parental career value, salary and gender compositely predict students’ preference for teaching profession (R=.291; F(3,471) =14.503, p < 0.05).Subsequently when the relative contribution of the independent variables were looked into, only salary was the significant influential variable (salary β = .287, t = 6.498, p < 0.05) while parental career value and gender were not. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that government motivate teachers with better salary and provide good working environment to improve the image of teachers. It was also recommended that Government, Policy makers, curriculum planners should set up a scheme to encourage hard working teachers by promoting them annually and sending them on training abroad

Sitting and Looking: The Development of Stability and Visual Exploration

Get PDF
This longitudinal study focused on the interaction of developing sitting postural control with look time, which served as a measure for cognitive processing. Twenty-eight typically developing infants and 16 infants with motor delays were evaluated using center-of-pressure measures to assess stability of sitting postural control and videography to assess look time at objects, at three progressive stages of sitting development. Results indicated that look time decreased significantly in conjunction with a significant increase in postural stability in both groups as sitting progressed to independence. Infants with motor delays showed significantly longer looks when compared to typical infants at the middle stage of sitting. We conclude that developmental changes in look time are related to changes in sitting postural control, and infants with motor delay may have greater difficulty looking during emerging postural control skills in sitting. Early interventionists may use look time as an indicator of sitting effort and cognitive processing during assessment and program planning

The Use of Play Assessment to Evaluate the Cognitive Skills of Two-and Three-Year-Old Children

Play assessment is increasing in popularity despite the lack of empirical support. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of play assessment with young children and determine its efficacy in determining cognitive levels of development. Eight 2-year-olds and eight 3 1/2-year-olds were observed playing in an unstructured format. Results indicated that Exploratory Play becomes more complex with age and is displayed more than Pretend Play in an unstructured play session. Children\u27s play primarily consisted of Exploratory Play, Pretend Play and Problem Solving and Planning Skills. Several of the Supple mental Subdomains measured by play assessment were not observed to occur in the spontaneous play format. A tendency for increasing complexity of play across time in session was also found

To assess COVID-19 knowledge, attitude and prevention practice as well as the associated factors among people living in Southwest, Nigeria. This was an online cross-sectional study among dwellers of southwest Nigeria. Data were collected online with kobo toolbox and analyzed using descriptive statistics, test of independence and binary logistic regression. Of the 286 study participants, 96.1% had good knowledge, 99.3% had positive attitude towards control of COVID-19, while 77.3% had good practices for prevention of the virus. Majority of the participants (86.9%) had tertiary education, 11.3% were 40years or older. Age and education were independently associated with COVID-19 prevention practice. After adjustment for some selected socio-demographic factors, only age of 10 – 19 years (OR: 3.83, CI: 1.05, 14), age 20-29 years (OR: 2.99, CI: 1.18 -7.55), and 30 -39 years (OR: 4.35, CI: 1.49-12.67) were more likely to have good practice of COVID-19 prevention compared to age >=40 years. The result revealed a high prevalence of good practices, and majority had good knowledge of COVID-19 and positive attitude towards control of COVID-19. Age and education were identified to be associated with practice of COVID-19 prevention. While further exploration revealed that elders (>=40years) were not likely to have good practice of COVID-19 prevention. We deduced that good practice of COVID-19 prevention was high in southwest Nigeria but notably low among elders and those who attained below tertiary education in southwest Nigeria. However, people of older age and poor education should be given much attention for proper enlightening and prevention strategies in this pandemic

Parent Involvement and Views of School Success: The Role of Parents’ Latino and White American Cultural Orientations

We examined ethnicity and cultural orientation as predictors of parents\u27 views of and involvement in children\u27s education, using data gathered from the Latino (n = 74) and non-Latino (17 White and 13 ethnic minority) parents of children in an elementary school\u27s dual-language program. Parents completed a questionnaire that assessed Latino and White American cultural orientations, importance of children\u27s academic and social success, and self- and significant other involvement in children\u27s education. Results indicated that Latino (and other ethnic minority) parents valued academic and social success equally and more strongly than did Whites and that Whites valued social success more strongly than academic success. Latinos also reported greater involvement of significant others. These differences were largely accounted for by cultural orientations. Educational practices that take into account differences in cultural orientations and the involvement of significant others thus seem more likely to improve academic outcomes than do efforts intended to promote the valuing of education

This paper argues that it is the duty and intellectual responsibility of indigenous elites to write the history of their own people. It claims that the knowledge of the language of peoples’ birth, history, cultural values, traditional norms, geography and education, to mention but a few place aborigines of a an area on a vantage position to deliver this crucial service to their people and humanity. This paper of the opinion that a few weeks’ vacation by expertrates to Igbo land; Nigerian is quite insufficient to equip any expatriate with the full knowledge and endowments needed to write about this fascinating people and area. That was the reason why theses researchers written what they know about their people, their history as it is and as it should be, to put records straight and decimate misinformation.
