Relationship between macroscopic physical properties and local distortions of low doping La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO3: an EXAFS study
A temperature-dependent EXAFS investigation of La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO3 is presented
for the concentration range that spans the ferromagnetic-insulator (FMI) to
ferromagnetic-metal (FMM) transition region, x = 0.16-0.22. The samples are
insulating for x = 0.16-0.2 and show a metal/insulator transition for x = 0.22.
All samples are ferromagnetic although the saturation magnetization for the 16%
Ca sample is only ~ 70% of the expected value at 0.4T. We find that the FMI
samples have similar correlations between changes in the local Mn-O distortions
and the magnetization as observed previously for the colossal magnetoresistance
(CMR) samples (0.2 < x < 0.5) - except that the FMI samples never become fully
magnetized. The data show that there are at least two distinct types of
distortions. The initial distortions removed as the insulating sample becomes
magnetized are small and provides direct evidence that roughly 50% of the Mn
sites have a small distortion/site and are magnetized first. The large
remaining Mn-O distortions at low T are attributed to a small fraction of
Jahn-Teller-distorted Mn sites that are either antiferromagnetically ordered or
unmagnetized. Thus the insulating samples are very similar to the behavior of
the CMR samples up to the point at which the M/I transition occurs for the CMR
materials. The lack of metallic conductivity for x <= 0.2, when 50% or more of
the sample is magnetic, implies that there must be preferred magnetized Mn
sites and that such sites do not percolate at these concentrations.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev.
Flight Test Overview for UAS Integration in the NAS Project
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is conducting a series of flight tests intended to support the reduction of barriers that prevent unmanned aircraft from flying without the required waivers from the Federal Aviation Administration. The most recent testing supported two separate test configurations. The first investigated the timing of Detect and Avoid (DAA) alerting thresholds using a radar-equipped unmanned vehicle and multiple live intruders flown at varying encounter geometries. The second configuration included a surrogate unmanned vehicle (flown from a ground control station, with a safety pilot on board) flying a mission in a virtual air traffic control airspace sector using research pilot displays and DAA advisories to maintain separation from live and virtual aircraft. The test was conducted over a seven-week span in the summer of 2015. The data from over 100 encounter sorties will be used to inform the RTCA Phase 1 Detect and Avoid and Command and Control Minimum Operating Performance Standards (MOPS) intended to be completed by the summer of 2016. Follow-on flight-testing is planned for the spring of 2016 to capture remaining encounters and support validation of the MOPS
Flow Field and Acoustic Predictions for Three-Stream Jets
Computational fluid dynamics was used to analyze a three-stream nozzle parametric design space. The study varied bypass-to-core area ratio, tertiary-to-core area ratio and jet operating conditions. The flowfield solutions from the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code Overflow 2.2e were used to pre-screen experimental models for a future test in the Aero-Acoustic Propulsion Laboratory (AAPL) at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC). Flowfield solutions were considered in conjunction with the jet-noise-prediction code JeNo to screen the design concepts. A two-stream versus three-stream computation based on equal mass flow rates showed a reduction in peak turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) for the three-stream jet relative to that for the two-stream jet which resulted in reduced acoustic emission. Additional three-stream solutions were analyzed for salient flowfield features expected to impact farfield noise. As tertiary power settings were increased there was a corresponding near nozzle increase in shear rate that resulted in an increase in high frequency noise and a reduction in peak TKE. As tertiary-to-core area ratio was increased the tertiary potential core elongated and the peak TKE was reduced. The most noticeable change occurred as secondary-to-core area ratio was increased thickening the secondary potential core, elongating the primary potential core and reducing peak TKE. As forward flight Mach number was increased the jet plume region decreased and reduced peak TKE
Measurement of the electron electric dipole moment using GdIG
A new method for the detection of the electron edm using a solid is
described. The method involves the measurement of a voltage induced across the
solid by the alignment of the samples magnetic dipoles in an applied magnetic
field, H. A first application of the method to GdIG has resulted in a limit on
the electron edm of 5E-24 e-cm, which is a factor of 40 below the limit
obtained from the only previous solid-state edm experiment. The result is
limited by the imperfect discrimination of an unexpectedly large voltage that

A 2dF spectroscopic study of globular clusters in NGC 5128: Probing the formation history of the nearest giant Elliptical
We have performed a spectroscopic study of globular clusters (GCs) in the
giant elliptical NGC 5128 using the 2dF facility at the Anglo-Australian
telescope. We obtained integrated optical spectra for a total of 254 GCs, 79 of
which are newly confirmed on the basis of their radial velocities and spectra.
In addition, we obtained an integrated spectrum of the galaxy starlight along
the southern major axis. We derive an empirical metallicity distribution
function (MDF) for 207 GCs (~14 of the estimated total GC system) based upon
Milky Way GCs. This MDF is multimodal at high statistical significance with
peaks at [Z/H]~-1.3 and -0.5. A comparison between the GC MDF and that of the
stellar halo at 20 kpc (~4 Reff) reveals close coincidence at the metal-rich
ends of the distributions. However, an inner 8 kpc stellar MDF shows a clear
excess of metal-rich stars when compared to the GCs. We compare a higher S/N
subsample (147 GCs) with two stellar population models which include non-solar
abundance ratio corrections. The vast majority of our sample (~90%) appears
old, with ages similar to the Milky Way GC system. There is evidence for a
population of intermediate-age (~4-8 Gy) GCs (<15% of the sample) which are on
average more metal-rich than the old GCs. We also identify at least one younger
cluster (~1-2 Gy) in the central regions of the galaxy. Our observations are
consistent with a picture where NGC 5128 has undergone at least two mergers
and/or interactions involving star formation and limited GC formation since
z=1, however the effect of non-canonical hot stellar populations on the
integrated spectra of GCs remains an outstanding uncertainty in our GC age

Prevalence of six viral and bacterial diseases in wild hogs in South Carolina (2007-2013)
The wild hog (Sus scrofa) is an invasive species that can pose a serious threat to native ecosystems, the domestic livestock industry, and human health. It is estimated that wild hog damage in the United States amounts to roughly $1.5 billion each year; however, this estimate could substantially increase if wild hogs transmitted a viral or bacterial disease to the country’s domestic livestock industry. From 2007-2013, blood and nasal secretion samples were collected from 629 wild hogs in South Carolina to test for 6 selected diseases including classical swine fever, swine brucellosis, pseudorabies virus, porcine circovirus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, and swine influenza virus all of which can be transmitted to domestic livestock. The sex, age class, and geographic location of each wild hog sampled were also recorded. Results indicate that age class was significantly associated with swine brucellosis, pseudorabies virus, and porcine circovirus prevalence. Positive swine brucellosis, pseudorabies virus, and porcine circovirus samples were found in 50.0-92.3% of counties sampled. Because wild hogs are present in every county of South Carolina, this information is crucial to determine disease hotspots in the state and can be shared with at-risk individuals and domestic livestock operations in affected counties
Coefficient of normal restitution of viscous particles and cooling rate of granular gases
We investigate the cooling rate of a gas of inelastically interacting
particles. When we assume velocity dependent coefficients of restitution the
material cools down slower than with constant restitution. This behavior might

Use of Sandwich-Cultured Human Hepatocytes to Predict Biliary Clearance of Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers and HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
Previous reports have indicated that in vitro biliary clearance (Clbiliary) determined in sandwich-cultured hepatocytes correlates well with in vivo Clbiliary for limited sets of compounds. The purpose of this study was 1) to determine the in vitro Clbiliary in sandwich-cultured human hepatocytes of angiotensin II receptor blockers and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors that undergo limited metabolism and 2) to compare the predicted Clbiliary values with estimated in vivo hepatic clearance data in humans. The average biliary excretion index and in vitro intrinsic Clbiliary values of olmesartan, valsartan, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, and pitavastatin in sandwich-cultured human hepatocytes were 35, 23, 31, 25, and 16%, respectively, and 0.943, 1.20, 0.484, 3.39, and 5.48 ml/min/kg, respectively. Clbiliary values predicted from sandwich-cultured human hepatocytes correlated with estimated in vivo hepatic clearance values based on published data (no in vivo data in humans was available for pitavastatin), and the rank order was also consistent. In conclusion, in vitro Clbiliary determined in sandwich-cultured human hepatocytes can be used to predict in vivo Clbiliary of compounds in humans
