Following basal stem rot in young oil palm plantings
The PCR primer GanET has previously been shown to be suitable for the specific amplification of DNA from Ganoderma boninense. A DNA extraction and PCR method has been developed that allows for the amplification of the G. boninense DNA from environmental samples of oil palm tissue. The GanET primer reaction was used in conjunction with a palm-sampling programme to investigate the possible infection of young palms through cut frond base surfaces. Ganoderma DNA was detected in frond base material at a greater frequency than would be expected by comparison with current infection levels. Comparisons are made between the height of the frond base infected, the number of frond bases infected, and subsequent development of basal stem rot. The preliminary results suggest that the development of basal stem rot may be more likely to occur when young lower frond bases are infected
Expert patient perspectives on radiotherapy: a phenomenological comparison
AbstractBackgroundPatient involvement in health profession student training is becoming more common and includes clinical case studies, informing curriculum development and active teaching in dedicated patient experience sessions. Despite a growing evidence base supporting patient involvement, there is little published data concerning motivation for involvement. A qualitative study was performed to provide narrative relating to patient experiences in expert patient sessions on an undergraduate radiation therapy course.MethodsA phenomenological approach utilised semi-structured interviews with two expert patients from different backgrounds. A common set of questions were used for each participant. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed before thematic coding.ResultsBoth participants identified areas of similarity as well as key difference in their experiences. Both had different levels of public speaking experience as well as different levels of knowledge relating to radiation therapy treatment. Both found the initial session emotional but ultimately enjoyed the process and found it cathartic.ConclusionThe patients enjoyed this experience and identified clear value of the teaching for themselves and the students. Previous public speaking or clinical experience seemed to have limited impact on patient experience and suggested the vulnerability of the situation. Both had different perspectives of their fellow patients and their role in the healthcare partnership. These findings indicate the value of ensuring students have access to a range of perspectives from different patients.</jats:sec
Manor Farm Barn, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire; tree-ring analysis of timbers
Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on 16 samples from the barn at Manor Farm. This resulted in the production of two site sequences, KDMBSQ01 and KDMBSQ02. The former comprises eight samples with an overall length of 150 rings and the latter two samples with an overall length of 81 rings. Site sequence KDMBSQ01 is dated as spanning the years AD 1260–1409. Site sequence KDMBSQ02 is undated. A single sample, KDM-B09, with an overall length of 113 rings is dated as spanning the years AD 1371–1483. Five samples remain ungrouped and undated. The results indicate that the timbers used in the primary construction of the barn were probably all felled in the last few years of the first decade of the fifteenth century. A single dated arcade post from the southernmost truss indicates that the building underwent repairs or modifications just under a century later, in the last few years of the fifteenth century or, the first few years of the sixteenth century

with deceleration related to the local laser intensity (by the parameter

to the usual constant deceleration mode. Slowing efficiencies of up to
are realised and compared to those predicted by modelling.

Technical assistance, neo-colonialism or mutual trade? The experience of an Anglo/Ukrainian/Russian social work practice learning project
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union there has been a steady stream of Western consultants ready to work in Eastern Europe and Russia and share professional and academic expertise and experience. Social work, unknown as a discrete discipline or profession in the Soviet Union, has been a growth area with funding from a variety of sources to help promote East-West partnerships.Social work theory and practice emphasises critical appraisal of policy and embraces issues of power, discrimination and oppression. Social work educators should therefore be especially alert to the complex ethical questions which these kinds of collaborations raise, and adept at finding practical solutions or workable compromises. This article explores these ethical and political issues with reference to a project to develop social work practice learning in a Russian oblast' (region). The project was an ambitious partnership of British, Ukrainian and Russian educators, involving numerous Russian social work and related agencies, and four Russian universities and colleges in one oblast'. The authors use a series of vignettes to help the reader achieve insights into these East-West transactions. The article concludes with a discussion of different interpretations of these dealings, using three prisms: technical assistance, neo-colonialism and mutual trade
What are the current and future requirements for magnetic resonance imaging interpretation skills in radiotherapy? A critical review
AbstractPurposeIncreasing usage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in radiotherapy (RT) and the advent of MRI-based image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) suggests a need for additional training within the RT profession. This critical review aimed to identify potential gaps in knowledge by evaluating the current skill base in MRI among therapeutic radiographers as evidenced by published research.MethodsPapers related to MRI usage were retrieved. Topic areas included outlining, planning and IGRT; diagnosis, follow-up and staging-related papers were excluded. After selection and further text analysis, papers were grouped by tumour site and year of publication.ResultsThe literature search and filtering resulted in a total of 123 papers, of which 66 were related to ‘outlining’, 37 to ‘planning’ and 20 to ‘IGRT’. The main sites of existing MRI expertise in RT were brain, central nervous system, prostate, and head and neck tumours. Expertise was clearly related to regions where MRI offered improved soft-tissue contrast. MRI studies within RT have been published from 2007 onwards at a steadily increasing rate.ConclusionCurrent use of MRI in RT is mainly restricted to sites where MRI offers a considerable imaging advantage over computed tomography. Given the changing use of MRI for image guidance, emerging therapeutic radiographers will require training in MRI interpretation across a wider range of anatomical regions.</jats:sec
Wick Farm Cottage, Heddington Wick Common, Heddington, Wiltshire: tree-ring analysis of timbers
Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on all seven of the timbers sampled from
two medieval phases at Wick Farm Cottage. This resulted in the production of two site
chronologies, HWWFSQ01 and HWWFSQ02. These comprise three and two samples
with overall lengths of 178 years and 67 years respectively. The first site chronology dates
to AD 1158–1335, whilst the second chronology is undated. The dated samples, thought
to be associated with the earliest medieval phase, indicate a programme of felling, and
hence likely construction, in the mid-AD 1330s
Schizophrenia in older adults
Although the number of persons over the age of 55 with schizophrenia is expected to double over the next 20 years, the research data on older people with schizophrenia is limited. This appears to be because until the middle of the 20th century, it was assumed that mental illness in older people was a part of the aging process and older people are often excluded from research investigations. There is a need for nursing research to explore how people with schizophrenia, as they age, learn to manage their problems, as well as how those who are first diagnosed with schizophrenia in later life adapt to their illness. Mental health nurses need to be cautious in assigning premature labels to older adults with mental illness that may lead to unsubstantiated assumptions about levels of disability. Instead, they should realize individual potential regarding undiscovered strengths and should attempt to create interventions that recognize and foster personal development for older adults with schizophrenia
