Denman Research Forum Recipient - 2nd PlaceThe Color Book is a two-part dance narrative about colorism from the African American female perspective. The first section is entitled Foreword. It is a three-minute solo performed to a live spoken word artist. The second section, entitled Chapter One, is a six-minute work performed by the ensemble. The Color Book identifies the stereotypes associated with skin color on the black spectrum to celebrate black female life through dance. Upon its completion, The Color Book attempted to reconstruct the image of Black women in dance by understanding their existence and reclaiming their identity.Arts Undergraduate Research Scholarship and the Student Fund Initiative in the Department of DanceNo embargoAcademic Major: Danc

Dont Mess with Texas: Getting the Lone Star State to Net-Zero by 2050

The world is decarbonizing. Many countries, companies, and financial institutions have committed to cutting their emissions. Decarbonization commitments have been issued by: 136 countries including Canada, China, and the UK, at least 16 U.S. states including New York, Louisiana, and Virginia, and a third of the largest 2,000 publicly traded companies in the world, including Apple, Amazon, and Walmart, and numerous Texas companies like ExxonMobil, American and Southwest Airlines, Baker Hughes, and AT&T.1–9 These decarbonizing countries, states, cities, and companies are Texas's energy customers. If Texas ignores the challenge to decarbonize its economy, it may eventually face the more difficult challenge of selling carbon-intensive products to customers around the world who do not want them. We are already seeing this scenario beginning to play out with France canceling a liquified natural gas deal from Texas gas producers and both U.S. and international automakers announcing shifts to electric vehicles. Proactive net-zero emissions strategies might allow Texas to maintain energy leadership and grow the economy within a rapidly decarbonizing global marketplace.Thankfully, Texas is uniquely positioned to lead the world in the transition to a carbon-neutral energy economy. With the second highest Gross State Product in the US, the Texas economy is on par with countries like Canada, Italy, or Brazil. Thus, Texas's decisions have global implications. Texas also has an abundant resource of low-carbon energy sources to harness and a world-class workforce with technical capabilities to implement solutions at a large-scale quickly and safely. Texas has a promising opportunity to lead the world towards a better energy system in a way that provides significant economic benefits to the state by leveraging our renewable resources, energy industry expertise, and strong manufacturing and export markets for clean electricity, fuels, and products. The world is moving, with or without Texas, but it is likely to move faster--and Texas will be more prosperous--if Texans lead the way. There are many ways to fully decarbonize the Texas economy across all sectors by 2050. In this analysis, we present a Business as Usual (BAU) scenario and four possible pathways to Texas achieving state-wide net-zero emissions by 2050. Figure ES-1 provides a visual comparison of scenario conditions

Variants in GNAI1 cause a syndrome associated with variable features including developmental delay, seizures, and hypotonia

Purpose: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) encompass a spectrum of genetically heterogeneous disorders with features that commonly include developmental delay, intellectual disability, and autism spectrum disorders. We sought to delineate the molecular and phenotypic spectrum of a novel neurodevelopmental disorder caused by variants in the GNAI1 gene. Methods: Through large cohort trio-based exome sequencing and international data-sharing, we identified 24 unrelated individuals with NDD phenotypes and a variant in GNAI1, which encodes the inhibitory Gαi1 subunit of heterotrimeric G-proteins. We collected detailed genotype and phenotype information for each affected individual. Results: We identified 16 unique variants in GNAI1 in 24 affected individuals; 23 occurred de novo and 1 was inherited from a mosaic parent. Most affected individuals have a severe neurodevelopmental disorder. Core features include global developmental delay, intellectual disability, hypotonia, and epilepsy. Conclusion: This collaboration establishes GNAI1 variants as a cause of NDDs. GNAI1-related NDD is most often characterized by severe to profound delays, hypotonia, epilepsy that ranges from self-limiting to intractable, behavior problems, and variable mild dysmorphic features

The primary purpose of the Interprofessional Project (IPRO) 330 team is to promote the study of mathematics and the sciences amongst Chicago Public School (CPS) students. We intend to achieve this goal primarily by enhancing the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu and by interacting directly with CPS students, educators, and administrators. The website, entitled Science Fair Extravaganza, is already fully functional thanks to the efforts of previous IPRO 330 groups. Our team aims to further improve and publicize this website. To improve the website we will be addressing suggestions given by CPS teachers and students as well as outside education professionals in an effort to provide a high quality and useful project. The success of our IPRO will be assessed by increasing the number of daily hits received by Science Fair Extravaganza and by positive direct interaction with CPS students.Deliverable
