The Rise and Fall of World Trade, 1870-1939
Measured by the ratio of trade to output, the period 1870 1913 marked the birth of the first era of trade globalization and the period 1914 39 its death. What caused the boom and bust? We use an augmented gravity model to examine the gold standard, tariffs, and transport costs as determinants of trade. Until 1913 the rise of the gold standard and the fall in transport costs were the main trade-creating forces. As of 1929 the reversal was driven by higher transport costs. In the 1930s, the final collapse of the gold standard drove trade volumes even lower.

Age validation of quillback rockfish (Sebastes maliger) using bomb radiocarbon
Rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) support one of the most economically important f isheries of the Pacific Northwest and it is essential for sustainable management that age estimation procedures be validated for these species. Atmospheric testing of thermonuclear devices during the
1950s and 1960s created a global radiocarbon (14C) signal in the ocean environment that scientists have identified
as a useful tracer and chronological marker in natural systems. In this study, we first demonstrated that fewer samples are necessary for age validation using the bomb-generated 14C signal by emphasizing the utility of the time-specific marker created by the initial rise of bomb-14C. Second, the bomb-generated 14C signal retained in fish otoliths was used to validate the age and age estimation method of the quillback rockfish (Sebastes maliger) in the
waters of southeast Alaska. Radiocarbon values from the first year’s growth of quillback rockfish otoliths were plotted against estimated birth year to produce a 14C time series spanning 1950 to 1985. The initial rise in bomb-14C from prebomb levels (~ –90‰) occurred in 1959 [±1 year]
and 14C levels rose relatively rapidly to peak Δ14C values in 1967 (+105.4‰) and subsequently declined through the end of the time series in 1985 (+15.4‰). The agreement between the year of initial rise of 14C levels from the quillback rockfish time series and the chronology determined for the waters of southeast Alaska from yelloweye rockfish (S. ruberrimus) otoliths validated the aging method for the quillback rockfish. The concordance of the entire quillback rockfish 14C time series with the yelloweye rockfish time series demonstrated the effectiveness of this age validation

ATM Quality of Service Tests for Digitized Video Using ATM Over Satellite: Laboratory Tests
A digitized video application was used to help determine minimum quality of service parameters for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) over satellite. For these tests, binomially distributed and other errors were digitally inserted in an intermediate frequency link via a satellite modem and a commercial gaussian noise generator. In this paper, the relation- ship between the ATM cell error and cell loss parameter specifications is discussed with regard to this application. data set. Background measurements are provided for the period when Cariaco samples were run, as well as revisions leading
to the most recent version of the floating varve chronology. The floating Cariaco chronology has been anchored to an
updated and expanded Preboreal pine tree-ring data set, with better estimates of uncertainty in the wiggle-match. Pending any

Effectiveness of insecticide-treated bednets in malaria prevention in Haiti: a case-control study
Background Insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) are eff ective in preventing malaria where vectors primarily bite indoors
and late at night, but their eff ectiveness is uncertain where vectors bite outdoors and earlier in the evening. We
studied the eff ectiveness of ITNs following a mass distribution in Haiti from May to September, 2012, where the
Anopheles albimanus vector bites primarily outdoors and often when people are awake.
Methods In this case-control study, we enrolled febrile patients presenting to outpatient departments at 17 health
facilities throughout Haiti from Sept 4, 2012, to Feb 27, 2014, who were tested with malaria rapid diagnostic
tests (RDTs), and administered questionnaires on ITN use and other risk factors. Cases were defi ned by positive RDT
and controls were febrile patients from the same clinic with a negative RDT. Our primary analysis retrospectively
matched cases and controls by age, sex, location, and date, and used conditional logistic regression on the matched
sample. A sensitivity analysis used propensity scores to match patients on ITN use propensity and analyse malaria
among ITN users and non-users. Additional ITN bioeffi cacy and entomological data were collected.
Findings We enrolled 9317 patients, including 378 (4%) RDT-positive cases. 1202 (13%) patients reported ITN use.
Post-hoc matching of cases and controls yielded 362 cases and 1201 matched controls, 19% (333) of whom reported
consistent campaign net use. After using propensity scores to match on consistent campaign ITN use, 2298 patients,
including 138 (7%) RDT-positive cases, were included: 1149 consistent campaign ITN users and 1149 non-consistent
campaign ITN users. Both analyses revealed that ITNs did not signifi cantly protect against clinical malaria
(odds ratio [OR]=0·95, 95% CI 0·68–1·32, p=0·745 for case-control analysis; OR=0·95, 95% CI 0·45–1·97, p=0·884
for propensity score analysis). ITN and entomological data indicated good ITN physical integrity and bioeffi cacy, and
no permethrin resistance among local mosquitoes.
Interpretation We found no evidence that mass ITN campaigns reduce clinical malaria in this observational study in
Haiti; alternative malaria control strategies should be prioritised
