A Task Analytic Process to Define Future Concepts in Aviation
A necessary step when developing next generation systems is to understand the tasks that operators will perform. One NextGen concept under evaluation termed Single Pilot Operations (SPO) is designed to improve the efficiency of airline operations. One SPO concept includes a Pilot on Board (PoB), a Ground Station Operator (GSO), and automation. A number of procedural changes are likely to result when such changes in roles and responsibilities are undertaken. Automation is expected to relieve the PoB and GSO of some tasks (e.g. radio frequency changes, loading expected arrival information). A major difference in the SPO environment is the shift to communication-cued crosschecks (verbal / automated) rather than movement-cued crosschecks that occur in a shared cockpit. The current article highlights a task analytic process of the roles and responsibilities between a PoB, an approach-phase GSO, and automation
Aqueous Angiography with Fluorescein and Indocyanine Green in Bovine Eyes.
PurposeWe characterize aqueous angiography as a real-time aqueous humor outflow imaging (AHO) modality in cow eyes with two tracers of different molecular characteristics.MethodsCow enucleated eyes (n = 31) were obtained and perfused with balanced salt solution via a Lewicky AC maintainer through a 1-mm side-port. Fluorescein (2.5%) or indocyanine green (ICG; 0.4%) were introduced intracamerally at 10 mm Hg individually or sequentially. With an angiographer, infrared and fluorescent images were acquired. Concurrent anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) was performed, and fixable fluorescent dextrans were introduced into the eye for histologic analysis of angiographically positive and negative areas.ResultsAqueous angiography in cow eyes with fluorescein and ICG yielded high-quality images with segmental patterns. Over time, ICG maintained a better intraluminal presence. Angiographically positive, but not negative, areas demonstrated intrascleral lumens with anterior segment OCT. Aqueous angiography with fluorescent dextrans led to their trapping in AHO pathways. Sequential aqueous angiography with ICG followed by fluorescein in cow eyes demonstrated similar patterns.ConclusionsAqueous angiography in model cow eyes demonstrated segmental angiographic outflow patterns with either fluorescein or ICG as a tracer.Translational relevanceFurther characterization of segmental AHO with aqueous angiography may allow for intelligent placement of trabecular bypass minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries for improved surgical results
The Virasoro vertex algebra and factorization algebras on Riemann surfaces
This paper focuses on the connection of holomorphic two-dimensional
factorization algebras and vertex algebras which has been made precise in the
forthcoming book of Costello-Gwilliam. We provide a construction of the
Virasoro vertex algebra starting from a local Lie algebra on the complex plane.
Moreover, we discuss an extension of this factorization algebra to a
factorization algebra on the category of Riemann surfaces. The factorization
homology of this factorization algebra is computed as are the correlation
functions. We provide an example of how the Virasoro factorization algebra
implements conformal symmetry of the beta-gamma system using the method of
effective BV quantization
Physicochemical factors influence the abundance and culturability of human enteric pathogens and fecal indicator organisms in estuarine water and sediment
To assess fecal pollution in coastal waters, current monitoring is reliant on culture-based enumeration of bacterial indicators, which does not account for the presence of viable but non-culturable or sediment-associated micro-organisms, preventing effective quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA). Seasonal variability in viable but non-culturable or sediment-associated bacteria challenge the use of fecal indicator organisms (FIOs) for water monitoring. We evaluated seasonal changes in FIOs and human enteric pathogen abundance in water and sediments from the Ribble and Conwy estuaries in the UK. Sediments possessed greater bacterial abundance than the overlying water column, however, key pathogenic species (Shigella spp., Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella spp., hepatitis A virus, hepatitis E virus and norovirus GI and GII) were not detected in sediments. Salmonella was detected in low levels in the Conwy water in spring/summer and norovirus GII was detected in the Ribble water in winter. The abundance of E. coli and Enterococcus spp. quantified by culture-based methods, rarely matched the abundance of these species when measured by qPCR. The discrepancy between these methods was greatest in winter at both estuaries, due to low CFU's, coupled with higher gene copies (GC). Temperature accounted for 60% the variability in bacterial abundance in water in autumn, whilst in winter salinity explained 15% of the variance. Relationships between bacterial indicators/pathogens and physicochemical variables were inconsistent in sediments, no single indicator adequately described occurrence of all bacterial indicators/pathogens. However, important variables included grain size, porosity, clay content and concentrations of Zn, K, and Al. Sediments with greater organic matter content and lower porosity harbored a greater proportion of non-culturable bacteria (including dead cells and extracellular DNA) in winter. Here, we show the link between physicochemical variables and season which govern culturability of human enteric pathogens and FIOs. Therefore, knowledge of these factors is critical for accurate microbial risk assessment. Future water quality management strategies could be improved through monitoring sediment-associated bacteria and non-culturable bacteria. This could facilitate source apportionment of human enteric pathogens and FIOs and direct remedial action to improve water quality
Next-Generation Raman tomography Instrument for Non-Invasive In Vivo Bone Imaging
Combining diffuse optical tomography methods with Raman spectroscopy of tissue provides the ability for in vivo measurements of chemical and molecular characteristics, which have the potential for being useful in diagnostic imaging. In this study a system for Raman tomography was developed and tested. A third generation microCT coupled system was developed to combine 10 detection fibers and 5 excitation fibers with laser line filtering and a Cytop reference signal. Phantom measurements of hydroxyapatite concentrations from 50 to 300 mg/ml had a linear response. Fiber placement and experiment design was optimized using cadaver animals with live animal measurements acquired to validate the systems capabilities. Promising results from the initial animal experiments presented here, pave the way for a study of longitudinal measurements during fracture healing and the scaling of the Raman tomography system towards human measurements
Intraocular pressure and medication changes associated with Xen gel stent: A systematic review of the literature
The Xen gel stent (Allergan Inc, an AbbVie company; Dublin, Ireland) was conceived as an option for patients requiring modest IOP reduction but for whom trabeculectomy was not yet indicated. As with any glaucoma surgery, establishing criteria for patient selection and identifying factors that contribute to a high likelihood of success are important. To help guide clinical decision-making, a systematic review of published studies on the gel stent was performed, with the goal of understanding postoperative outcomes based on clinical and patient factors. Results were organized around a series of pertinent clinical questions based on scenarios encountered in clinical practice. Criteria for including studies were intentionally broad, with the objective of simulating the diverse population of glaucoma patients encountered in real-world practice. Outcomes for IOP and medication reduction postoperatively were assessed in various analyses, including in eyes with various glaucoma types and severity; in eyes naĂŻve to surgery as well as those with a history of prior incisional glaucoma surgery; and when surgery was performed as a standalone procedure or at the time of cataract surgery. The results of each of the various analyses were consistent in demonstrating that successful gel stent surgery achieved a postoperative IOP of approximately 14.0 mm Hg and reduction to fewer than 1 glaucoma medication. Additional data are shown on outcomes by method of implant (ab interno vs ab externo); intraoperative use of antifibrotics; and rates of needling in published studies
Binary Star Orbits from Speckle Interferometry. VI. The Nearby Solar-Type Speckle-Spectroscopic Binary HR 6697
Interferometric, spectroscopic, astrometric, and photometric observations are presented for the nearby solar-type binary HR 6697. The system consists of a G0-2 V primary and a K2-S V secondary. From a combined solution of the speckle and spectroscopic data the orbital period is 881 days or 2.41 yr, the semimajor axis is 2.1 A.U., the eccentricity is 0.42, and the inclination is 68°. The masses and luminosities are 1.16±0.12 Msun, 0.77±0.05 Msun, 1.61±0.15 Lsun, and 0.17±0.05 Lsun. Two independent determinations of the parallax, a trigonometric parallax of 0 .0379±0 .0030, and an orbital parallax of 0 .0375±0 .0014, are in excellent agreement and give a mean distance of 26.6±0.9 pc. The system appears to be metal rich relative to the Sun, and space motions do not identify it with any moving group
SkyMapper Filter Set: Design and Fabrication of Large Scale Optical Filters
The SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey will be conducted from Siding Spring
Observatory with u, v, g, r, i and z filters that comprise glued glass
combination filters of dimension 309x309x15 mm. In this paper we discuss the
rationale for our bandpasses and physical characteristics of the filter set.
The u, v, g and z filters are entirely glass filters which provide highly
uniform band passes across the complete filter aperture. The i filter uses
glass with a short-wave pass coating, and the r filter is a complete dielectric
filter. We describe the process by which the filters were constructed,
including the processes used to obtain uniform dielectric coatings and
optimized narrow band anti-reflection coatings, as well as the technique of
gluing the large glass pieces together after coating using UV transparent epoxy
cement. The measured passbands including extinction and CCD QE are presented.Comment: 9 pages, 2 tables, 7 figure
Analysis of lower limb internal kinetics and electromyography in elite race walking.
The aim of this study was to analyse lower limb joint moments, powers and electromyography patterns in elite race walking. Twenty international male and female race walkers performed at their competitive pace in a laboratory setting. The collection of ground reaction forces (1000 Hz) was synchronised with two-dimensional high-speed videography (100 Hz) and electromyography of seven lower limb muscles (1000 Hz). As well as measuring key performance variables such as speed and stride length, normalised joint moments and powers were calculated. The rule in race walking which requires the knee to be extended from initial contact to midstance effectively made the knee redundant during stance with regard to energy generation. Instead, the leg functioned as a rigid lever which affected the role of the hip and ankle joints. The main contributors to energy generation were the hip extensors during late swing and early stance, and the ankle plantarflexors during late stance. The restricted functioning of the knee during stance meant that the importance of the swing leg in contributing to forward momentum was increased. The knee flexors underwent a phase of great energy absorption during the swing phase and this could increase the risk of injury to the hamstring muscles
