    The electric two-echelon vehicle routing problem

    Two-echelon distribution systems are attractive from an economical standpoint and help to keep large vehicles out of densely populated city centers. Large trucks can be used to deliver goods to intermediate facilities in accessible locations, whereas smaller vehicles allow to reach the final customers. Due to their reduced size, pollution, and noise, multiple companies consider using an electric fleet of terrestrial or aerial vehicles for last-mile deliveries. Route planning in multi-tier logistics leads to notoriously difficult problems. This difficulty is accrued in the presence of an electric fleet since each vehicle operates on a smaller range and may require planned visits to recharging stations. To study these challenges, we introduce the electric two-echelon vehicle routing problem (E2EVRP) as a prototypical problem. We propose a large neighborhood search (LNS) metaheuristic as well as an exact mathematical programming algorithm, which uses decomposition techniques to enumerate promising first-level solutions in conjunction with bounding functions and route enumeration for the second-level routes. These algorithms produce optimal or near-optimal solutions for the problem and allow us to evaluate the impact of several defining features of optimized battery-powered distribution networks. We created representative E2EVRP benchmark instances to simulate realistic metropolitan areas. In particular, we observe that the detour miles due to recharging decrease proportionally to 1/ρx with x ≈ 5/4 as a function of the charging stations density ρ; e.g., in a scenario where the density of charging stations is doubled, recharging detours are reduced by 58%. Finally, we evaluate the trade-off between battery capacity and detour miles. This estimate is critical for strategic fleet-acquisition decisions, in a context where large batteries are generally more costly and less environment-friendly

    Low-temperature ordered phases of the spin-12\frac{1}{2} XXZ chain system Cs2_2CoCl4_4

    In this study the magnetic order of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain system Cs2_2CoCl4_4 in a temperature range from 50 mK to 0.5 K and in applied magnetic fields up to 3.5 T is investigated by high-resolution measurements of the thermal expansion and the specific heat. Applying magnetic fields along a or c suppresses TNT_\textrm{N} completely at about 2.1 T. In addition, we find an adjacent intermediate phase before the magnetization saturates close to 2.5 T. For magnetic fields applied along b, a surprisingly rich phase diagram arises. Two additional transitions are observed at critical fields ÎŒ0HSF1≃0.25\mu_0 H_{SF1}\simeq 0.25 T and ÎŒ0HSF2≃0.7\mu_0 H_{SF2}\simeq 0.7 T, which we propose to arise from a two-stage spin-flop transition.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

    Comparing high-resolution specific heat and thermal expansion measurements to exact finite-size diagonalization, we demonstrate that Cs2_2CoCl4_4 for a magnetic field along the crystallographic b axis realizes the spin-12\frac{1}{2} XXZ chain in a transverse field. Exploiting both thermal as well as virtual excitations of higher crystal field states, we find that the spin chain is in the XY-limit with an anisotropy Jz/J⊄≈0.12J_z/J_\perp \approx 0.12 substantially smaller than previously believed. A spin-flop Ising quantum phase transition occurs at a critical field of ÎŒ0Hbcr≈2\mu_0 H_b^{\rm cr} \approx 2 T before around 3.5 T the description in terms of an effective spin-12\frac{1}{2} chain becomes inapplicable.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Angiopoietin-1 Mimetic Nanoparticles for Restoring the Function of Endothelial Cells as Potential Therapeutic for Glaucoma

    A root cause for the development and progression of primary open-angle glaucoma might be the loss of the Schlemm’s canal (SC) cell function due to an impaired Angiopoietin-1 (Angpt-1)/Tie2 signaling. Current therapeutic options fail to restore the SC cell function. We propose Angpt-1 mimetic nanoparticles (NPs) that are intended to bind in a multivalent manner to the Tie2 receptor for successful receptor activation. To this end, an Angpt-1 mimetic peptide was coupled to a poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic acid) (PEG-PLA) block co-polymer. The modified polymer allowed for the fabrication of Angpt-1 mimetic NPs with a narrow size distribution (polydispersity index < 0.2) and the size of the NPs ranging from about 120 nm (100% ligand density) to about 100 nm (5% ligand density). NP interaction with endothelial cells (HUVECs, EA.hy926) as surrogate for SC cells and fibroblasts as control was investigated by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. The NP–cell interaction strongly depended on the ligand density and size of NPs. The cellular response to the NPs was investigated by a Ca2+ mobilization assay as well as by a real-time RT-PCR and Western blot analysis of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). NPs with a ligand density of 25% opposed VEGF-induced Ca2+ influx in HUVECs significantly which could possibly increase cell relaxation and thus aqueous humor drainage, whereas the expression and synthesis of eNOS was not significantly altered. Therefore, we suggest Angpt-1 mimetic NPs as a first step towards a causative therapy to recover the loss of SC cell function during glaucoma

    Preliminary genetic evidence of two different populations of Opisthorchis viverrini in Lao PDR

    Opisthorchis viverrini is a major public health concern in Southeast Asia. Various reports have suggested that this parasite may represent a species complex, with genetic structure in the region perhaps being dictated by geographical factors and different species of intermediate hosts. We used four microsatellite loci to analyze O. viverrini adult worms originating from six species of cyprinid fish in Thailand and Lao PDR. Two distinct O. viverrini populations were observed. In Ban Phai, Thailand, only one subgroup occurred, hosted by two different fish species. Both subgroups occurred in fish from That Luang, Lao PDR, but were represented to very different degrees among the fish hosts there. Our data suggest that, although geographical separation is more important than fish host specificity in influencing genetic structure, it is possible that two species of Opisthorchis, with little interbreeding, are present near Vientiane in Lao PDR
