    Thermal Conductivity and Specific Heat of the Spin-Ice Compound Dy2_2Ti2_2O7_7: Experimental Evidence for Monopole Heat Transport

    Elementary excitations in the spin-ice compound Dy2_2Ti2_2O7_7 can be described as magnetic monopoles propagating independently within the pyrochlore lattice formed by magnetic Dy ions. We studied the magnetic-field dependence of the thermal conductivity {\kappa}(B) for B || [001] and observe clear evidence for magnetic heat transport originating from the monopole excitations. The magnetic contribution {\kappa}_{mag} is strongly field-dependent and correlates with the magnetization M(B). The diffusion coefficient obtained from the ratio of {\kappa}_{mag} and the magnetic specific heat is strongly enhanced below 1 K indicating a high mobility of the monopole excitations in the spin-ice state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Substitution effects on the temperature vs. magnetic-field phase diagrams of the quasi-1D effective Ising spin-1/2 chain system BaCo2_2V2_2O8_8

    BaCo2_2V2_2O8_8 is a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain system with pronounced Ising anisotropy of the magnetic exchange. Due to finite interchain interactions long-range antiferromagnetic order develops below TN5.5T_{\rm N} \simeq 5.5 K, which is accompanied by a structural distortion in order to lift magnetic frustration effects. The corresponding temperature vs.vs. magnetic-field phase diagram is highly anisotropic with respect to the magnetic-field direction and various details are still under vivid discussion. Here, we report the influence of several substitutions on the magnetic properties and the phase diagrams of BaCo2_2V2_2O8_8. We investigate the substitution series Ba1-x_{\text{1-x}}Srx_{\text{x}}Co2_{\text{2}}V2_{\text{2}}O8_{\text{8}} over the full range 0x10\le x \le 1 as well as the influence of a partial substitution of the magnetic Co2+^{2+} by small amounts of other magnetic transition metals or by non-magnetic magnesium. In all cases, the phase diagrams were obtained on single crystals from magnetization data and/or high-resolution studies of the thermal expansion and magnetostriction.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

    Low-temperature ordered phases of the spin-12\frac{1}{2} XXZ chain system Cs2_2CoCl4_4

    In this study the magnetic order of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain system Cs2_2CoCl4_4 in a temperature range from 50 mK to 0.5 K and in applied magnetic fields up to 3.5 T is investigated by high-resolution measurements of the thermal expansion and the specific heat. Applying magnetic fields along a or c suppresses TNT_\textrm{N} completely at about 2.1 T. In addition, we find an adjacent intermediate phase before the magnetization saturates close to 2.5 T. For magnetic fields applied along b, a surprisingly rich phase diagram arises. Two additional transitions are observed at critical fields μ0HSF10.25\mu_0 H_{SF1}\simeq 0.25 T and μ0HSF20.7\mu_0 H_{SF2}\simeq 0.7 T, which we propose to arise from a two-stage spin-flop transition.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

    A qualitative exploration of sense of community through reflective journals during wilderness outdoor education curricula

    There has been repeated encouragement in the literature for researchers to examine the various mechanisms that make up group experiences in outdoor education contexts. As a result, positive sense of community is often one of the implicit or explicit goals of programs and organizations that utilize outdoor settings to deliver educational and/or therapeutic programs. The purpose of this study was to understand how participants understand and experience sense of community formation during participation on outdoor education curricula (OEC) programs. Qualitative data, in the form of 124 participant trip journals, were analyzed and revealed two core themes illuminating sense of community structure and process. Implications for theory, research, and practice are discussed

    Quantum Criticality of an Ising-like Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Chain in Transverse Magnetic Field

    We report on magnetization, sound velocity, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the Ising-like spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo2_2V2_2O8_8 as a function of temperature down to 1.3 K and applied transverse magnetic field up to 60 T. While across the N\'{e}el temperature of TN5T_N\sim5 K anomalies in magnetization and sound velocity confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering transition, at the lowest temperature the field-dependent measurements reveal a sharp softening of sound velocity v(B)v(B) and a clear minimum of temperature T(B)T(B) at Bc,3D=21.4B^{c,3D}_\perp=21.4 T, indicating the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order. At higher fields, the T(B)T(B) curve shows a broad minimum at Bc=40B^c_\perp = 40 T, accompanied by a broad minimum in the sound velocity and a saturation-like magnetization. These features signal a quantum phase transition which is further characterized by the divergent behavior of the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter ΓB(BBc)1\Gamma_B \propto (B-B^{c}_\perp)^{-1}. By contrast, around the critical field, the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter converges as temperature decreases, pointing to a quantum critical point of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model.Comment: Phys.     The Effect of Leadership Style on Sense of Community and Group Cohesion in Outdoor Pursuits Trip Groups

    Outdoor pursuits trip programs are widely popular around the world (Attarian, 2001). Many of these programs are centered in colleges and universities, and may be either academic or extracurricular in nature. Participants in these programs engage in a variety of outdoor adventure recreation activities such as backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, sea kayaking, and caving. Outcomes of participation in these programs include (among others): enhanced problem solving skills; appreciation of the natural environment; increased self-confidence; accomplishment of common goals and objectives; and the development of positive group experiences and interpersonal relationships (Ewert & McAvoy, 2000; Martin, Cashel, Wagstaff, & Breunig, 2006). These positive group experiences and interpersonal relationships can lead to an enhanced sense of community among group members (Mitten, 1999). Sense of community is characterized by sharing an awareness of group membership, influencing each other, fulfilling needs, and being emotionally connected (McMillan & Chavis, 1986). Group cohesion, or sense of belonging, attraction, and unity a group has toward its members (Wilson, 2002), has been found to influence the creation of community, and vice versa (McMillan & Chavis). In essence, when feelings of cohesiveness are present in a group, members tend to feel a greater sense of community. At the same time, those feelings of community enhance group cohesion. Most outdoor pursuits trip groups have a designated leader or instructor. The leader is responsible for the protection of the natural environment, for the safety of the participants, and for enhancing the quality of the experience for the students or participants (Martin et al., 2006). Thus, the outdoor leader is in a unique position to influence the sense of community and group cohesion of that group.     The spin-12\frac{1}{2} XXZ chain system Cs2_2CoCl4_4 in a transverse magnetic field

    Comparing high-resolution specific heat and thermal expansion measurements to exact finite-size diagonalization, we demonstrate that Cs2_2CoCl4_4 for a magnetic field along the crystallographic b axis realizes the spin-12\frac{1}{2} XXZ chain in a transverse field. Exploiting both thermal as well as virtual excitations of higher crystal field states, we find that the spin chain is in the XY-limit with an anisotropy Jz/J0.12J_z/J_\perp \approx 0.12 substantially smaller than previously believed. A spin-flop Ising quantum phase transition occurs at a critical field of μ0Hbcr2\mu_0 H_b^{\rm cr} \approx 2 T before around 3.5 T the description in terms of an effective spin-12\frac{1}{2} chain becomes inapplicable.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Architecture of the yeast elongator complex

    The highly conserved eukaryotic Elongator complex performs specific chemical modifications on wobble base uridines of tRNAs, which are essential for proteome stability and homeostasis. The complex is formed by six individual subunits (Elp1-6) that are all equally important for its tRNA modification activity. However, its overall architecture and the detailed reaction mechanism remain elusive. Here, we report the structures of the fully assembled yeast Elongator and the Elp123 sub-complex solved by an integrative structure determination approach showing that two copies of the Elp1, Elp2, and Elp3 subunits form a two-lobed scaffold, which binds Elp456 asymmetrically. Our topological models are consistent with previous studies on individual subunits and further validated by complementary biochemical analyses.     Preliminary genetic evidence of two different populations of Opisthorchis viverrini in Lao PDR

    Opisthorchis viverrini is a major public health concern in Southeast Asia. Various reports have suggested that this parasite may represent a species complex, with genetic structure in the region perhaps being dictated by geographical factors and different species of intermediate hosts. We used four microsatellite loci to analyze O. viverrini adult worms originating from six species of cyprinid fish in Thailand and Lao PDR. Two distinct O. viverrini populations were observed. In Ban Phai, Thailand, only one subgroup occurred, hosted by two different fish species. Both subgroups occurred in fish from That Luang, Lao PDR, but were represented to very different degrees among the fish hosts there. Our data suggest that, although geographical separation is more important than fish host specificity in influencing genetic structure, it is possible that two species of Opisthorchis, with little interbreeding, are present near Vientiane in Lao PDR
